DUTCHESS COUNTY – Multiple fire departments, including the volunteer-only departments, throughout Dutchess County responded to a variety of fire and EMS calls throughout the day on Christmas.
Volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel were called away from their family celebrations, including Hughsonville firefighters who were called out just after 8:30 p.m. for a possible house fire on Ketchamtown Road.
Members of the command staff and a contingent of firefighters on an engine responded to the report, called in by a neighbor across the street, to investigate.
The house where the fire was believed to be burning sits on a hill, and from the neighbor’s house, there appeared to be flames shooting through the roof of the home.
Responding firefighters located a pile of burning debris in the backyard of the residence, close to the house. The homeowner had indicated that he was responsible for the fire. The small blaze was extinguished and the homeowner was advised to avoid burning materials in close proximity to the structure. Further admonishment of having open flames on a windy day was also given to the man.
The Hughsonville firefighters were able to return back to the firehouse shortly after 9 p.m.
