BINGHAMTON — Residents across the Hudson Valley/Catskills and Southern Tier are preparing for a significant winter storm expected to arrive Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday morning. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has identified a narrow band of heavy snowfall that could impact holiday travel plans just after Christmas.
Lead meteorologist Adam Gil reports that while the region narrowly missed a white Christmas, the upcoming system will bring a brief but intense window of precipitation. Forecasters are currently predicting snowfall totals between three and six inches for Sullivan and Delaware counties, as well as parts of the southern Hudson Valley.
The forecast indicates that snow will begin Friday afternoon and last into early Saturday. Peak snowfall rates could reach half to on e inch per hour during the height of the storm. Meteorologists note this system mirrors the characteristics of the storm that impacted the area this past Monday, featuring a similar narrow band of heavy accumulation.
Local officials urge both motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution while getting around.
The National Weather Service continues to monitor the storm’s track, as slight shifts could alter the final accumulation totals for neighboring counties.
