ALBANY – New legislation in Albany will tightening the ability to purchase Kratom in New York State.

One of two laws, sponsored by Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) will require all Kratom products sold to have a warning that it is not approved by the FDA, may cause side effects like nausea, aggression, hallucinations, trouble breaking, liver damage and death.”

The law also prevents Kratom products from advertising terms such as “natural” or “all-natural.”

Last week, the Orange County Legislature approved a ban on the purchase of the substance by anyone under 21. They also supported a proposal on the state level to ban it altogether, something Skoufis said he would consider supporting.

“There is a lot of emerging science, a lot of emerging evidence, and some people do claim that there are some positive health benefits. It is something I would want to dig into more to see if that is valid,” he said. “But I am certainly willing and open to entertaining any proposal that keeps New Yorkers safe, so I am happy to look at that.”

A second bill just signed into law will prevent Kratom from being sold to persons under the age of 21.
