MONTGOMERY – Glenn Schoonmaker, the longest-serving Montgomery town police chief, died on Friday, December 19. He was 88 years old.

Schoonmaker held the chief’s position from 1981 to 1993. He had over 20 years of service to the town.

Town Supervisor Stephen Brescia said he “served with honor, distinction and a great deal of professionalism.” The supervisor said the chief “was widely respected in the law enforcement community.”

State Assemblyman Brian Maher, formerly a town supervisor, said Schoonmaker leaves behind “a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment to public service. His leadership and dedication set a strong example for those who followed in his footsteps, and his impact on the community will not be forgotten.

During his career, Schoonmaker implemented the first DARE program at Valley Central High School and helped organize the Chester Police Academy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.
