KINGSTON – The Kingston Common Council has voted unanimously to re-issue the city’s housing emergency declaration and protect rent stabilization for some 1,200 households under the Emergency Tenant Protection Act.

“This is a huge victory for the Kingston tenants who have spent years fighting for their homes despite attacks and threats of retribution from landlords,” said Jenna Goldstein, Ulster County community organizer at For the many.

Rent stabilization has been in effect in Kingston since 2022. Landlords sued over the vacancy study that opened the door for the ETPA, but lost in New York’s highest court in June.
