MONTICELLO – During this time of year, there are many organizations like the United Way, the Federation for the Homeless, the Elks Club, the Rotary Clubs, and many more that gather toys, clothing, and food for people and families in need. One of them is the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, which has gathered toys from various sources to be distributed to churches in the area.
Sheriff Mike Schiff was surrounded by toys when he spoke about the officer’s efforts to help out.
“These are toys that have been donated from the community to be distributed to children locally. We’ve gotten a donation through Camp Simcha, our Jewish friends out in the Town of Lumberland, and these will be taken to churches, other groups, to be distributed to needy children in our community,” Schiff said.
The sheriff said sharing toys is important for the children during the holidays.
“People are still giving, which is what the holidays are supposed to be about: giving. And we’re seeing people stepping up, taking the time to give gifts and to help a child that they don’t even know, but to know that some child will get a gift.”
Undersheriff Eric Chaboty was taking toys out of his car to add to the donations they had already received, and he had a simple message. “Happy holidays!”
