NEWBURGH – Destiny Vargas and Andre Robinson, owners of An Artistic Taste Jamaican-fusion restaurant at 96 Broadway in Newburgh had just moved their restaurant from Harriman to the city six months ago, and they became the victims of a break-in and burglary early Monday.
The burglar broke in at around 12:20 a.m. by smashing the front door open, breaking the glass, and stealing the point-of-sale system, an iPad and cash drawer.
Vargas arrived just after 10 a.m., found the damage and called the police.
“I tried to scream. I said, ‘Hello, is anyone there.’ I heard nothing so that’s when I got shaken up and a little scared,” she told Mid-Hudson News. “At that point, I realized someone wasn’t there for shelter, because I was looking through the front window. I didn’t see anyone there, so that’s when I called the police.”
Vargas had the front door and frame replaced at a cost of $2,500.
They did have a security video system, but Robinson said the man had his face covered and was wearing a hoodie. He said you could see he used a crowbar to break in before he stole their property.
The police are investigating the burglary.
They have since set up a GoFundMe account to help cover the costs of the theft and repairs.
