ELLENVILLE – Ellenville Regional Hospital has made a significant advancement in medical imaging technology with the installation of a Siemens MRI scanner. This apparatus represents a pivotal moment for regional healthcare, as it is the first of its kind in the Hudson Valley and one of only four operational units across New York State.

Dr. James Dwyer says size matters.

“To accommodate our patients who have already come here for our services because of our larger machine, we are actually able to find an even larger machine,” he said. “The new MRI machine has an 87-meter opening, which is the largest diameter MRI machine in the world.”

A larger opening means the patients who are claustrophobic or large will be more comfortable using this machine. Images enhanced by AI make this larger opening possible.

“The resolution stays the same. That’s always the biggest issue with MRI, being able to keep the resolution, the clarity of the picture. And this machine does all of that,” Dwyer said.

Generally speaking, people who come to Ellenville Hospital for an MRI are surprised, he said.

“A lot. Yes. Have an MRI somewhere else. And then they have come to us, and they’re like, ‘Oh, wow, this is great.’ And then other people don’t realize how good it is here until you go somewhere else and you’re like, ‘oh, this wasn’t like the machine in Ellenville.'”
