CARMEL – A 74-year-old Brewster man was killed Thursday in a crash on Route 301 near the Carmel-Kent town line.
Carmel Police identified the victim as Vito Planamento.
Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann said the mishap occurred around 9:15 a.m. when Planamento’s Subaru was headed eastbound and in the vicinity of Smokey Hollow Court while rounding a sharp curve, the vehicle struck an oncoming pickup truck and trailer that was carrying an excavator.
Planamento, who was alone at the time, suffered massive trauma. He was rushed by members of the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital where he died.
Hoffmann said the impact caused a secondary collision involving two additional vehicles with one of the drivers suffering minor injuries.
Route 301 in Carmel—Putnam’s main east-west artery—was closed for hours until the accident investigation was completed.
Assisting Carmel Police were members of the Kent Police, Putnam Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Putnam County Fire Police, A Putnam Empress paramedic and the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services.
Authorities originally summoned a LifeNet medivac helicopter but decided on transporting the victim to the hospital by ambulance since the chopper was on another call at the time.
