TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in the violent stabbing of a six-year-old child in the Town of Poughkeepsie on Friday night. The incident took place on Creek Road near Morgan Lake around 5:57 p.m.
Police, fire, and EMS personnel were dispatched to 16 Creek Road in Poughkeepsie on Friday night.
Karen Rendon, a Poughkeepsie resident, fled the scene after the stabbing of the child, was located around 2:10 a.m. on Parker Avenue in the City of Poughkeepsie, and she was taken into custody.
Rendon has been charged with felony assault, felony criminal possession of a weapon, and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was arraigned Saturday in the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on $500,000 cash bail, $1 million bond, or $1.5 million partially-secured bond.
Witnesses have told Mid-Hudson News that a child flagged down a motorist on Friday night on Creek Road and told them that a child was bleeding in the house and was in pain. The two passersby called police and then rushed into the house, where they found the six-year-old, and began rendering aid until police arrived and took over life-saving measures.
The child was taken to a local trauma center for emergency treatment of the injuries. The youth remains hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Initial radio communications referenced a barricaded subject at the residence, which the town police say was not correct.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Town of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-485-3670.
