PEEKSKILL – The Children’s Village and the Field Library in Peekskill have announced an agreement to create a new library at 41 North Division Street in downtown Peekskill in the historic Worker’s Comp Building.

The mixed-use facility will house the library as well as affordable homes and commercial space.

Library Director Dana Hysell said the new library will replace the current operation that is comingled with the police station and other city operations.

“While it is technically a larger square footage, it feels smaller because it was an old school building and it is broken up and is not as user friendly,” she said.

Children’s Village President Jeremy Kohomban said the plan is to develop 22 apartments, 11,000 square feet of commercial space and the library.

“We love libraries; we built the Inwood Library in Manhattan and that opened a year ago,” he said. Hysell and he felt this project was “the right match for the community of Peekskill.”

Kohomban said they purchased the building for $2 million. The project will take about two years to complete.
