TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – The town’s highway workers, under the leadership of Highway Superintendent Mike Simon, were working at double-time on Monday, before Tuesday’s snow arrived. The Highway Department crew has been consumed by leaf-pickup for the past few weeks over the town’s 150 miles of roads, but was transitioning to snow removal on Monday.
“Our staff started their shifts this morning, tasked with picking up piles of leaves that property owners constructed in the town,” said Highway Superintendent Mike Simon. “We have been picking up leaves for a few weeks, but today we focused on visiting all 150 miles of roadway to get the leaves picked up before we transition to snow-removal operations,” he told Mid-Hudson News.
Town of Poughkeepsie highway workers have collected more than 1,700 tons of leaves this fall, before switching to plowing duties.
With snow forecast to arrive Tuesday morning around 7 a.m. and falling throughout the day, the Town of Poughkeepsie is expecting three to six inches of snow that needs to be moved. “Our drivers will come in before dawn and pre-treat the roads with liquid calcium chloride to slow the snow accumulation on the roads,” Simon said. “Once the snow starts, our staff of 24 drivers will switch to ‘plow mode’ by manning the plow trucks and heading out to pave the roads, including the 16 miles of roads that have new blacktop,” added Deputy Highway Superintendent Mike Stearns.
“The roads in the Town of Poughkeepsie will be cleared by our dedicated staff,” Simon said, adding, “But, if you don’t need to be on the roads Tuesday, please stay home and allow the plow drivers to clear the roads.”
