BREWSTER – Brewster students are learning to respect the rights of all individuals thanks to the Holocaust and Human Rights and Education Center located in Harrison.
The 12-year-olds attended the non-profit’s Ninth annual Leadership Conference held at Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester in Rye where dozens of middle schools from throughout the Hudson Valley participated.
Brewster students worked collaboratively with other 7th graders during two workshops: How to Be an Upstander and Respecting the Rights of All Individuals. The pre-teens attended breakout sessions addressing how to incorporate human dignity and human rights while learning to be upstanders.
The young people were also heard a presentation by storyteller Sheila Arnold, who captured the essence of Bess, an enslaved woman owned by the proprietor of the famed Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg. Arnold shared events of the colony in 1774 including the dissolution of the House of Burgesses, the beginning talks of revolution and the events of the Boston Tea Party.
The students will now begin meeting to strategize for a lesson they plan to teach to all 6th graders in January, around the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
