CARMEL – Some 250,000 packages are stolen daily across the United States in what experts say is a $37 billion annual problem that costs both consumers and retailers with thefts increasing during the holiday shopping season as more people shop online.

Authorities say porch pirates have become more and more brazen even with a variety of home security cameras installed on many residences throughout the region in addition to a low risk of prosecution.

Carmel Police realize that holiday shopping is in full swing with many residents taking advantage of online sales. Yet, Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann said several tips exist to prevent package theft.

The career law enforcement official suggests tracking shipments, scheduling deliveries when at home, having a neighbor pick up deliveries, utilizing locked delivery boxes as well as keeping delivery areas clear, visible and in view of security cameras.

The chief way to avoid “porch piracy” is to shop locally. Remember purchasing from local merchants is a good alternative to preventing porch plunder for possible pirating perpetrators.”
