Woodturning Mulberry Gift Pen

Welcome back to my shop. In this week's video we're going to make a pen. Now a pen is something which is quite simple to make and for quite a simple thing to make the variety of things that you can make is quite astonishing. The number of different pen kits that you can get on the market is absolutely astounding. There are hundreds and thousands of different pen kits that you can get. Now the basic materials to make a pen and when I say basic material obviously you can go overboard and have better materials and better equipment but the basic things that you will have to have to create a pen would be a pen blank. This specific pen blank is a mulberry and this is from a local wood that I found here in my town. Which is blessed with a mulberry and olive and obviously a pen kit. Everything else other than the pen blank and the pen kit is in my opinion optional as far as equipment goes. You can do a pen without a pen mandrel and actually I did a few pens at the beginning of my woodturning escapade without a pen mandrel and it worked out perfectly. You can do it without rulers. You can do it without a saw which I will use to cut the pen blank to size. You can use a serrated kitchen knife to cut the pen blank and it will work just the same. Other than the most necessary which are the blank and the kit we're going to use different things here. We have the saw and the saw stand that will help me and I also will use a ruler or a caliper both ways. I will need a drill and in this case with this specific kit a seven millimeter drill you need some kind of adhesive either epoxy or CA. For the final assembly of the pen you would need some kind of press so here I have a pen press that I've actually showed in one of my videos that I've made but you can either buy those you can make those and if you don't have those you can use a vise if you have a woodworking or a metalworking vise. If you really want you can use your lathe using your tailstock as a press. As far as the finishing for the pen you can use either a friction polish, you can use a CA finish which is what we will do today on this pen or you can or you can use any other type of finish that you find adequate. We also need to remember of course that the pen is going to be used so we would want to make it as resistant as possible to wear.
