I'm sure cheating happens in most countries, but as far as in Japan, what causes cheating? I'm going to talk about the possible factors based on living here and what I often see.
But this is just my personal opinion. Sorry if I'm missing something or wrong.
Big thanks to all the people in this video for sharing their thoughts.
This is actually what many people are worried about dating in Japan.
According to some Japanese celebrity,
cheating is our culture.
It sounds crazy and depressing,
but seems like many people actually believe like that.
I often get a message telling me,
Japanese people cheat a lot, right?
Whether that's true or not.
Let me make this clear just in case.
Not all Japanese people are cheaters, obviously.
And most people know it's wrong.
But some people cheat and some people don't,
just like in any country.
See, cheating happens in most countries,
not just in Japan.
So I hope you don't take it like,
all Japanese must be cheating
and I will never date any Japanese person.
Actually, I'm not sure Japanese people more cheat
than people in other countries.
Probably it depends on the country you compare with.
But depending on the culture or society,
the reasons may be quite different.
So today, let me talk about the possible factors in Japan
based on living here.
Number one, a lot of cheating dramas or films.
It's many because it often gets a big hit and attention,
especially among Japanese women in their 20s or 30s.
And this is one of the most demanding genres
in Japanese porn.
So many people are excited to watch that.
But why this gets so popular in Japan
when it comes to entertainment?
Actually, just hearing this word,
it's already uncomfortable for many people
as we are deeming unspeakable, unacceptable
or inappropriate to bring up.
But ironically, the more society tells us that's taboo,
the more intriguing it becomes.
It's definitely uncomfortable and yet curious and exciting.
Especially in Japan, we have a shame culture.
Talking about any taboos or doing something rare
is considered shameful.
Of course, if you are satisfied with your current relationship,
it's unlikely to affect you negatively
no matter how many cheating movies you watch.
However, what if you are not happy with your partner
and you had a desire and opportunity to do it?
I think cheating dramas or movies can affect those people.
Like I said, most people know it's a bad thing and immoral.
But they keep glorifying cheating
and you are feeling they are pushing you back.
Many couples in Japan, as far as I know,
they tend to avoid talking about their relation issues
until later and just pretend to be okay
rather than having an honest conversation
and confronting the issue.
Some people just keep hiding that like sex life issues.
About half of the people are sexless in Japan.
But the bigger issue is they don't talk about it.
That's too embarrassing and too hard for them.
But if you don't talk about it,
the problem is getting worse and worse.
And sexual dissatisfaction can motivate some people to cheat.
Maybe that's why this is quite common in many countries.
It sounds terrible and disgusting but makes sense.
And I feel like many people think that
having sex with another person is acceptable
as long as feelings are not involved.
A lot of prostitution going on
and many people go there just like they go to a restaurant or movie
and saying like,
I just feel my sexual needs nothing to do with my feelings
while hanging out with your opposite gender friend is not acceptable.
Having sex with someone else emotionally not connected
can be totally okay in Japan.
Maybe they are not tolerant about emotional cheating
but I think many people less care about sexual cheating.
According to the survey, only 30% of the men and 5% of the women
who have cheated on their partner actually got caught.
Now, as we all know, we all know that
and a better sense to tell if the guy is cheating or not.
So it's not a surprise more Japanese men get caught.
But what surprised you may be that
most cheaters don't get caught in Japan.
Many Japanese men work long hours and not at home until late at night.
So it's quite common in Japan,
married couples don't spend much time or talk together at night
and quite easy to do something behind their partner.
Not to mention many dating or cheating sites available nowadays.
Even if your partner found out you are cheating,
many women may be okay with it and just look the other way.
I think that's because they know cheating is not so uncommon in Japan
and they just kind of accept that.
In my opinion, people are more likely to cheat if they can get away with it.
Maybe you wanna say like once a cheater, always a cheater.
But as far as in Japan, not many people believe that way
and instead they blame themselves.
So many Japanese people do this.
Now maybe they don't think it's entirely their fault 100%
but quite common to see those people saying
I'm also to be blamed.
To be fair, if you are completely jerk or bitch
and being abusive or something,
maybe you are also to be blamed actually.
But some people instantly assume like
maybe I was not supportive enough.
Maybe I was not attractive enough.
That kind of behavior or mentality is quite common in the Japanese culture.
When something bad happens,
they are being modest and find their fault
rather than blaming the other person entirely.
Having said that,
I don't think Japan is like a super cheating-friendly country
and nobody blames you.
As far as all these cheaters or people involved in cheating
are treated like a criminal.
They instantly lost job, a big money,
reputation and trust from the society.
You might get that consequence.
Now I'm not gonna judge you even if you're a cheater.
If you think it's okay, that's totally your choice.
But me personally, I don't want to cheat on my partner
even if nobody blames me or I don't get caught
because I have too much respect and appreciation to my partner.
So probably I would rather choose to kill myself
or go to prison immediately.
