Robin Williams joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss his return to television after 30 years in the CBS comedy "The Crazy Ones."
And he really does have drinks with Kelly Clarkson.
The Crazy Ones premieres tonight.
Robin Williams, good morning to you.
Good morning, everyone.
Good morning, Mr. Williams.
Thank you very much.
An honor to be here this early.
We feel that, too.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays your daughter, says this about you.
Well, number one, she said,
I can't believe I'm working with Robin Williams.
Great, great, great.
But she says,
Working with Robin is sort of like when my three-year-old says something inappropriate.
It's really funny, but I can't laugh.
Wow.
I like that.
Thank you very much.
I mean, that's already three-year-old.
Thank you.
Mildly Touretian.
Thank you so much.
Being compared to a three-year-old.
Her daughter actually said,
Because she saw Aladdin, she called me,
Is he the man with all the little friends?
Yes.
My therapist uses the same term.
I'm sure we're on the show.
We're talking on the show.
Just look at Charlie.
Look at Charlie.
Hi, Charlie.
But it speaks to the genius of you.
Thank you.
This is your first return to television in three decades.
32 years, yes.
Since Mork and Mindy.
Yeah.
God bless you.
You pronounced it correctly.
A lot of times, people will say,
What was that show, Pork and Cindy?
Thank you.
Does Mork play a special role?
When I saw the video, I said,
I can't remember that.
It started off as a guest shot on Happy Days
because Gary Marshall's kid had seen Star Wars
and asked his dad if there could be an alien on Happy Days.
I wish I was in the room when Gary's gone.
I don't know.
Aliens in the 50s.
It's a little early for that now, the 60s.
But it was a gift.
It was like this amazing.
I won the lottery.
It was incredible.
You really did.
So, are you excited about this new show?
Yes.
It's been really exciting.
Working with Sarah Michelle, Hamish Linklater,
Amanda Setton, Jimmy Walk.
It's like a great cast.
I mean, I'm, you know, they're kind of focusing on me,
but it's a wonderful ensemble,
which makes it a lot better for me.
Some people are calling you the new Don Draper.
No.
Thank you.
Don't go there.
Too furry.
The new Don Draper.
God bless you.
But your character's based on a real guy.
Your character's based on a real guy.
We have a real advisor, a guy named John Montgomery,
who worked for Leo Burnett in Chicago.
And he tells me great stories about dealing with sponsors.
He was once on the phone with a sponsor and he said,
well, we're going to have a unicorn in this commercial.
And the sponsor actually went, a real unicorn?
And he went, I don't know, what do I say to them?
No, it's a pony with a prosthesis.
I don't know.
It was like I had to talk them through it.
And he told us stories about,
they once did a promotion in Times Square
where they had a giant coffee pot
pouring coffee into a cup over Times Square,
but they didn't factor in wind.
So it started to spray Times Square with hot coffee,
like a hot brown rain, which sounds like a Prince song.
I imagine Times Square's like, hey, that'd be great.
Forget Starbucks.
But it was pretty wild.
But he's been the advisor.
My character isn't him, but he advises us.
Do you still have time for stand-up?
Once in a while.
I do this thing called Set List,
which is like a one-man improv show
where they flash subjects behind you.
Oh, you're perfect for that.
Yeah, one of the subjects was introverted dictator.
So, hey.
It's all of you going, ooh.
Ask the man from Iran, what do you think of this subject?
It's very much like putting together a 20-minute improv set.
Or like seven minutes, actually.
That's how long you get.
How much of the script in the show is you...
23.5% improv.
Good. That's exactly what I wanted.
She hasn't finished her question yet, Robin.
But I knew where she was going.
Is you dancing?
There's one dance number, and it's the ballet.
It's an interpretive dance to McDonald's.
There I dance to the meat, and now thank you.
Wait a minute, wait a minute.
Show your socks, show your socks.
That's my lucha libre socks.
Your what socks?
No, I thought they were Hello Kitty socks.
Oh, thank you.
But I really am a three-year-old.
Hi, put on your Hello Kitty.
As Nathan Lane would say, one does want a hint of color.
Listen, Robin, this is the thing about you.
I think you're in such a good place professionally.
Personally, you're married to your wife, Susan,
who you met at an Apple store.
I'm thinking, I need to get myself to Apple.
Go, girl. Get the new iPhone 5.
I'm thinking about it.
It's amazing to have a phone that talks to you.
I don't need that.
Siri, turn it off, Robin.
Do not text that out.
This is what I want to talk to you, Robin, about.
Because I thought this was hilarious.
My phone has a moral GPS on it.
The girl you're texting is the same age as your daughter.
Reroute.
Do not do that.
Robin, you got married for the third time.
Third time.
This is a charm.
That's it.
If I get married, no more.
But your definition of divorce is where I'm going,
because I thought this was hilarious.
Divorce, derived from the Latin word meaning
to rip a man's genitals out of his wallet.
That was an old, old joke.
Yes.
I thought that one.
Threw his wallet, but thank you.
I had never heard that before.
Old, old joke, but thank you for bringing that back.
You're welcome.
And also, do you want to just come kick me in the heart?
No.
Okay, let's talk about your heart,
because you've been very candid.
The cowbell is still working.
Yes.
That's what I've heard.
I can crap standing up.
Morning, morning, everybody.
But how has your heart operation changed you?
Do you feel you've gotten a second chance at life?
Thank you.
I'm glad you're here, really.
It's really wonderful, because Charlie knows the same thing.
You get a big second.
It's a giant reboot, literally.
You bet it is.
The whole system reboots,
and you appreciate everyone and everything.
Always.
Every day above ground, as they say.
Do earthworms say every day below ground?
It's a good day, but...
But can you hear it?
No.
Oh, no.
You graze every four weeks.
But no.
I'm so glad I didn't get the mechanical valve,
because mechanical valves, you can hear them.
That would be a little disconcerting.
You're a big Twitter person, too.
I mean, I've only tweeted a couple of times.
Well, why do you?
Listen, I have a whole page of tweets.
From Robin Williams.
I guess I do.
My other person.
Now, tell them about that.
What are we doing?
You know what we do, Robert.
That's my page of tweets, yes.
Yes, I tweet, yes.
Twit.
The operative word.
Who is a person who twitters?
A twit.
Yes!
What's the past tense?
Don't go there.
Oh, gosh.
Robin Williams.
I can see you doing the math.
I love seeing when Charlie goes, it's big.
It's like seeing my uncle go,
Don't!
Stop right there!
Oh, praise him.
Praise him.
Thank you, Ross.
Okay.
We're trying to come back on point.
We're looking forward to it.
We've got to wrap up.
Bring back the decorum.
The one thing about the one tweet you said,
the one that I really enjoyed,
was the one about Kim Kardashian's dress.
Oh, that.
Mrs. Doubtfire.
I tweeted out that I rocked the dress better.
It looked like we both were wearing a couch,
but it was okay.
No, but did you go dress as Mrs. Doubtfire
into a store to buy?
Yes, an adult novelty store.
Yes.
That one, please.
The very large one.
Okay.
That one there.
Do you have anything slightly larger?
Okay.
What a delight.
Come back.
Thank you so much.
I can see you all going,
Oh, love it.
Thank you.
Thank you, Nora.
Thank you so much.
And the crazy ones.
Where did they come up with that name?
Actually, it came from the Apple ad.
Premieres at 9, 8 central, right here on CBS.
Thank you so much.
