Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett chat with “Extra” about “Verity,” their new movie adaptation of the Colleen Hoover book. Anne described the story as a "strategy of mirrors” and said it’s hard to figure out what the truth is. The trio talked about how it’s a steamy thriller — they all got to lock lips with each other! — but said they were just pals having fun on set. “Verity” is in theaters October 2.
The cast of the film *Verity* discusses the psychological complexity of the movie, the experience of filming a dark, gothic thriller, and the dynamics between the lead actors. They emphasize the film's ambiguous nature, which encourages viewers to question the truth and debate the identity of the villain.
Thank you for such a fun ride
I this is one of those occasions where the film I have to say like exceeded expectations
It was better than the book and I love the book. So congratulations
How would you guys and let's start with you and truly I mean that and how would you describe the ride that Verity takes?
Viewers and Verity the the character or the Verity the film the film. Oh, then we'll get into your character. I I think it's it's
It's like a strategy of mirrors, you know
You kind of look into one and you think you're seeing one thing that it's actually reflecting something else
And so it's really hard to understand what the truth is. And so I think that the experience of Verity is
Not just about questioning what you're seeing questioning what you believe
But actually questioning why you have a tendency to believe some people over others. Oh my god. Absolutely
I mean the best films are the ones that you walk out of the theater
Thinking about it and wondering what you experience what you thought Josh
How would you describe this rollercoaster ride that you're taking us on and what did you love most about it?
Well making it I I love the fact I got to work with these two
obviously, I got to work with Michael who is a fantastic director and
Kind of an actor in his direction like he's always picking a project that kind of challenges him in a new direction
This is definitely a new thing for him
And the character that he created for this story is so gothic and dark and twisted and fun
and yeah, so I just I felt really lucky to be on this trip with these guys and
Yeah, I mean, I hope that people just come out of it debating like their point of view on what actually happened
And then you know get into a little bit of a fight amazing Dakota. How about you?
What would you like the audience to walk out of the film thinking of and feeling I?
think just
Being okay with not ever really having a succinct
Ending to this movie. I think having it be up in the air and not really knowing who
The whole time you're wondering who the villain is and I think that's so much fun
like I I think audiences get tired of being spoon-fed information and being told what to believe so I think
It's nice to let people decide for themselves. What what story they want
Absolutely, and it was a great ride. I have to ask you and what is more challenging
Learning pages and pages of dialogue or acting without uttering a word
Pages and pages of dialogue
I felt like such a cheat when I would go to work and my job that day was to like let my hair dry
Naturally put on a nightgown and get into bed and like stare vacantly
I'll all my friends called me and she was like, aren't you bored? I'm like, no, I'm resting. It's great
And then while you're lying in bed doing that you're like running through the pages and pages of dialogue that you have coming up
I mean, I have to say I hope that you rested well because you have had quite a year and you deserve this rest
Okay, so what's more challenging thing doing global press tours for five films while expecting or preparing to welcome another baby home?
Well chasing two children. Oh, all of that happened. All of that is
simultaneously and and I have to say like I
It's very easy to look at me and be like, oh you're doing all these things I have so much help
I'm having I have so much support. I'm so lucky. These guys have carried me through this press tour
There's a whole team of people behind this fabulous rock wall
And and so I'm just I'm so cared for and looked after and I wish everybody who's expecting
Had the same level of support that I do. I mean, I wish we all look like you because I certainly do
I don't I don't even look like me. I this is a lot of smoke and mirrors. So well, you look beautiful
I hope you're feeling as well as you look Dakota these beautiful co-stars next to you
You had the enviable task of kissing them both. Not that we want to make you choose, but if you were to choose
Who would be the best kisser? And if you don't want to choose
We all kissed each other. Yes. Yeah, so so so it's a it's a it's a kiss
Oh, yeah, yeah
It's a miracle, nobody got sick
How lucky I would kiss Annie for the rest of my life
I love it. I love it. I I have to say
Okay
You again, I'm so sorry you have every woman in the world left
I'm gonna agree with that
We'll just leave it at that but you sir have these two beautiful women in love with you. I mean, what is that like?
well, I was very I was I
We had such a we had a fun working relationship the whole time on set we didn't it for for a film that is this
Intense and twisted and dark. It was just like we just laughed we had a really fun time
so as much as there was like
the love and the tension and the lustiness Hans in the movie
Yeah, no, no and I know and I totally get it and it's so much fun to look at the outside and be like
Like it's and it's like yeah, like just what you said, it's a sexy thriller but like in between takes
We're just pals and it's just such a funny thing to get to be an actor and these things that probably seems so strange
I mean outsider just
It was a sexy thrill and a joyride I have to say and another book coming up. I cannot wait
I just devoured yesteryear. Okay, I cannot wait. Please hurry up. No pressure
What are you most excited about that adaptation?
So our script is in really good shape. And so I'm just excited about finding the director that's gonna, you know, bring it to life
But it's you just said the word joy
I mean that that experience has been Tana Friedman has been adapting it and it's been a joy to work with her
Caro wrote an unbelievable book the whole team on it is so passionate about it
And and it's been amazing to just watch the readership grow and watch it kind of take a hold in people's minds
We just jumped on two years ago our production company because we thought it was a brilliant book
And so now we really feel like we just got incredibly lucky that that car like this back and chose us
Amazing. Well, I can't wait for that one as well. Congrats again on this one. Nice to see you
