We set out to make a better Weller CYPB using just Weller. We used Weller Special Reserve, Weller 12, Weller Antique 107, Weller Full Proof, and Weller Single Barrel, then put our blend to the test against the original CYPB and Poor Man’s Pappy.
💬 Do you think we made a better bourbon, or would you stick with Weller CYPB?

The hosts conduct a blending experiment to improve upon Weller \"Craft Your Perfect Bourbon\" (CYPB), which they find too flat and lacking in complexity. By blending Weller 12, Antique 107, and Full Proof, they create several prototypes. Through blind taste tests, they determine that a specific custom blend significantly outperforms the original in depth, richness, and finish.
Doesn't smell too horrific.
It's a little lighter.
A little thin.
This would be more of a cocktail barber for me.
No, it's different.
Maybe like a 7.1.
Definitely has more flavor.
Much higher than what you had in the previous one.
I wouldn't be upset if I paid 50 to 60 dollars for that one.
That's all I got.
One of those glasses is Weller CYPB.
A bottle people chase, trade for, and pay entirely too much money for.
And the other one that they're trying?
We made it.
Because we have a little problem with CYPB.
It's supposed to be the Weller crafted around what whiskey drinkers actually say that they want.
The problem is, every time we put it into a blind, it gets its ass kicked.
So we were wondering, could we actually make a better version of the CYPB?
Only using other Wellers.
Which means artfully bourbon is doing something completely unnecessary.
I think it's necessary.
We are fixing Weller CYPB.
Buffalo trace.
You're welcome.
Let's build bourbon.
Before we start blending anything, we need to actually start here.
What do we got here?
Craft your perfect bourbon.
That's what CYPB stands for.
Yes.
So this is a bourbon that's literally built around what drinkers said that they wanted.
Pretty interesting idea.
That's cool.
It's a great idea.
So Buffalo Trace took all those opinions and averaged them together.
The result?
Craft your perfect bourbon.
A weeded bourbon that's 95 proof and 8 years old.
But can a bourbon designed by consensus actually be exceptional?
Or did they really create craft your average bourbon?
So before we try to make it better, we're going to taste this and try to figure out
what's working, what's not working, what's missing, and what we actually change.
Yeah.
So get a glimpse.
Okay.
Let's see where this one falls short.
Nose.
Vanilla, caramel, maybe a little fruit.
Yeah.
It's a pleasant nose.
It's not terribly complex, but you do get some really nice mainstream bourbon notes,
I would say.
I would say it's okay.
It's okay.
Okay.
Let's taste.
Cheers.
All right.
So flavor's a lot of the same thing.
It's kind of flat.
Yeah.
Vanilla, caramel, a little fruit.
Not a whole lot of complexity.
It's simple, delightful, not much of a finish.
It's soft.
It's very classic.
It just kind of feels restrained.
That's a good way to put it.
Like it's being held back for some reason.
If I had one goal with this, make a better finish.
I want a little more intensity all around.
I want a little bit more of everything.
Okay.
So what do we want to keep from this profile?
I mean, the sweetness.
It's going to be sweet.
It's going to be weller.
It's going to be a weeded profile.
So the character you get from a weeded profile.
I think that's about it though.
There's not much else that you could say you want to keep.
Like you want to keep the softness.
A little more body, flavor.
Yeah.
And maybe just enough proof to wake up the senses a little bit.
Okay.
So now we know what we need to improve.
Yes.
We know what we need to add.
The next question is how are we going to do it?
What do we have to work with?
First up, special reserve.
Unfortunately, it's also 90 proof.
Yeah.
So that's not really going to help us out.
It's not going to bring anything to the table with that low proof.
It's very, I would say almost similar to that.
It's probably less age.
Yeah.
Lower proof.
So yeah, it's not.
Yeah.
Not.
Okay.
We'll just put that over here.
I don't think we can use the special reserve in this blend.
Next up, we have the Weller 12.
Could be promising.
Higher age.
Taking an 8, we could push it up to closer to 10 years.
Yes.
Proof on this, unfortunately, is 90 proof.
So where we gain age, we lose proof.
So we need to find a happy medium to raise the age without losing too much overall proof.
Yeah.
I think we can use this.
Next up, the Weller Antique 107.
What do you know?
Probably the most popular of the Weller lineup.
We don't have an exact age, but we do know it's 107 proof.
And we do know it's the most popular.
It's got more flavor.
It's got more spice.
I mean, obviously the proof, but I don't know.
There's something there that just makes it more interesting.
So I think this is solid.
I think we can definitely use this bottle.
Okay.
So we have a couple options here.
Next up, full proof.
Biggest proof, 114.
This is bottle at what it goes into the barrel at, 114 proof.
So this is going to add some more depth, maybe some richness, complexity, and obviously proof.
Yeah.
But we don't want to make this an overpowering high proof.
It needs to be.
So it's not going to be a lot.
It needs to still find that sweet spot of proof for the majority, the mass of people.
Yeah.
So we can safely assume that these are probably close in age.
A little less than that.
But I think if we add enough of this in.
We can bump it up.
Yes.
All right.
So this one's in.
Yeah.
It's in.
We got one more.
One more.
Single barrel.
Higher proof than CYPB.
97 proof.
Single barrel.
They can vary a little bit.
I don't think this one is worth being used because there's that inconsistency factor.
And then the proof 97, I don't think that's high enough to justify adding it to the block.
And the age isn't going to be.
It's probably likely the same in this neighborhood with all the others.
All right.
I'm going to put it over here.
What do you think?
They're going to wash from the sidelines.
Yeah.
So.
All right.
Ingredients.
This is what we're going to make a better version of CYPB with.
Okay.
You good with that?
I'm good.
So we've narrowed it down to three bottles.
Three ingredients that we're going to use.
We're going to use Weller 12 to give it that depth of age.
Then we're going to use the 107 for a little more of the spice and a little more character,
a little more of that fullness.
And then we're going to use the full proof.
That's going to add a little more body, obviously a little more proof,
and it's going to improve on that finish.
Three bottles, three jobs to fill.
All right.
Before we start blending any of these together, I know somebody is going to comment down below.
Yes.
We already know about Poor Man's Pappy.
Probably the most famous DIY Weller blend out there.
Yeah.
And if we're claiming we want to make a CYPB that's better than the original,
we got to make a better Poor Man's Pappy.
Right.
Poor Man's Pappy, 40% Weller 12, 60% Antique 107.
So we're going to have five glasses.
We're going to have the original CYPB.
We're going to have the Poor Man's Pappy.
And then we're going to have the three prototypes.
Before we start the blending of those prototypes, a quick plug.
If you haven't been to ArtifullyRubin.com lately, we have been adding a lot of stuff.
You're going to find reviews.
You're going to find rankings, buying guides, the works.
So if you like what we're doing here, go check it out.
There is a lot more coming your way.
All right.
Let's blend.
Blend.
We decided to build three prototypes,
each pushing the Weller lineup in a slightly different direction.
Prototype number one is 40% Weller 12, 40% Antique 107 and 20% Full Proof.
That comes in at 102 Proof and roughly around nine years.
Prototype number two leans harder into the Antique 107.
We're going to go 30% Weller 12, 50% Antique 107 and 20% Full Proof.
The Proof 104.3 and the age is going to be roughly eight and a half years.
Prototype number three, 20% Weller 12, 30% Antique 107 and 50% Full Proof.
It's going to be the highest Proof at 109.
Age is a little bit lower.
Eight years on this one.
Three different approaches.
Same goal.
More depth.
More flavor.
More finish.
And hopefully, better burp.
We're going to start on your left over here with glass A.
And we're going to move all the way down to glass B.
Here we go.
Glass A.
Scott has a hard time with the alphabets.
I feel like that's a better nose than what I just had.
It does smell like a slight improvement on the nose.
It's proofier.
Little more proof.
Could be slightly.
Cheers.
Okay.
There's a better hug.
A little more depth.
It's not so soft.
It's not soft.
There's really nothing that would say that this has got any kind of age on it.
Two has a little more of a dusty note to it.
Okay.
All right.
Cheers.
Pretty good.
We're definitely in the same playground.
There was a difference.
I could tell that this one had a little more hug.
This one was a little softer.
But like you said, dusty.
It tasted a little bit more.
Which did you think had more age?
This one.
Two?
Earth.
Yeah.
B?
Yeah.
All right.
C.
It's softer.
It's vanilla forward.
It's a little fruit.
It's closer to that.
This though, it smells a little bit more balanced.
More like well-rounded.
I agree.
Okay.
I like it.
Not a bad nose.
Okay.
Let's try it.
Oh.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
That thing is very nice.
It's got balance.
Like you said, balance on the balance.
Balance.
But there's more complexity and it has a finish.
Earth is a nice little finish.
It does taste dial-level.
I would say the nose was similar to this.
The taste was better than what I feel like I just sampled.
Yeah.
All right.
We could be totally wrong and it's this one.
I don't think it is.
The proof is higher on that one.
I think the proof has to be higher.
Yeah.
All right.
Here we go.
D?
D.
This one smells like it has more vanilla.
Vanilla.
More vanilla.
Little fruit.
Little bit less fruit.
Little less fruit.
One dimensional.
One dimensional flat.
Smells unfortunate.
Wow.
It's definitely sweet.
I like the palette.
Sweet.
It's definitely not proofy, but I enjoy the palette.
I think that palette is good.
It's good if you like sweet vanilla.
Yeah.
I'd say the nose and the palette on that one.
Not my favorite.
Moving on.
E.
There we go.
Just flying through this.
Okay.
This one.
Get a little more ethanol.
Yeah.
This is proof here.
Is it proof?
It's on the higher end.
I think it's above 100.
My nostrils feel this one.
It has to be higher proof.
I would agree with that.
It's like, oh, that's spicy.
It's got more finish.
It's got a butter hog, but I lost some flavor.
Yeah.
It's spicier.
It's proof here, but it lacks real flavor.
It's almost no depth.
Yeah.
That could be the highest proof of all these.
This one is awesome.
Do you want to go back through these real quick?
Or do you have an order?
Let's make sure we're confident in our ranking.
I think I have a winner, but one more quick run through.
Real quick.
My order last place is going to be glass.
A.
It felt flat.
I felt like the proof and the flavor were kind of stripped out of it.
Fourth place finish is going to be glass.
E.
The proof drowned out all the flavors, so it was kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Third place, I'm going to go glass B.
I liked the oak.
The oak was a nice oaky presence.
But it lacked a little sweetness.
That nice vanilla you typically get with Weller.
But the oak was nice.
And then I'm going to go with glass D.
The palate was soft.
Had some flavor, but all in all, it just was a little more on the basic end.
C was my clear winner.
I felt like this was the sweet spot for this experiment.
Good flavor.
Good proof.
It was a nice balance.
That's what I like most about this.
How about you?
I'm a little different.
Okay.
So this could be interesting.
But last place, I think it's D for me.
I don't know.
It went back to that soft, kind of almost boring kind of flavor.
All four of these had more proof or age or oak or something that added more complexity.
It's not bad.
I like flavor.
Give me flavor.
This one was fourth place.
E.
This is the opposite of D for me.
This one I just felt like is probably the highest proof, which normally would be a good
thing.
But I think it was just hot and didn't have any other flavor.
The flavor just got lost.
I think you said that.
And then I come down here to this end.
B is my third place.
These two are super close to me.
A is two.
And I'm in alignment with you.
C, number one.
These are really close.
They both had a little more oak influence, a little bit more depth, which I really liked.
This one hit all the notes for me.
There was depth, flavor, complexity, balance.
It just felt like a complete package.
All right.
Let's start with our overall last place with four points.
Four points total.
Prototype three.
Prototype three, the highest proof.
109.
109-ish proof.
Yeah.
That's so weird.
It should be good proof, though.
I feel like it lost the other flavors.
Yeah.
So next up, we have a tie for third place.
It's going to be glass D and glass A.
So we want to start with...
I guess it doesn't matter.
Yeah.
Go with that one.
Okay.
This is prototype one.
So our prototypes are not...
They're not faring so well.
So...
Oh my gosh.
Tell me what glass D is, because if this is prototype two, we're in trouble.
We're just going to end the episode right now.
All right.
D, I had an inkling.
Yeah.
CYPB?
CYPB.
It was the least interesting for me.
But you still liked it.
My second place.
Nose and everything.
It was enjoyable.
I still got a lot of flavor out of it.
So now we agreed unanimously in third is going to be glass B,
and that's going to get a total of six points.
It's going to finish in second place.
Tell me what it is.
Are we still in this thing, or has it already been discovered?
Oh my God.
Foreman's hat.
Yes.
So this is good.
This is good.
This is good for the video.
I will say that.
This one, it was...
I mean, it's a good blend.
It is.
And you're going to get age.
And that's kind of the thing with Pappy.
It's not the best blend, though.
Right.
It's very appropriately named.
Foreman's Pappy.
I'm excited.
That's second place.
This is going to get all 10 points.
That thing is freaking good.
So this was prototype number two.
Clear winner.
30% Weller 12, 50% Antique 107, and then 20% Bulletproof.
Perfect blend.
Yeah.
Perfect.
It really is.
Yes.
Had me worried for a minute when our first two prototypes went down.
But this one stood tall.
It beat the CYPB.
It beat the Foreman's Pappy.
Our prototype needs a name.
Yeah.
Okay.
I got it.
What?
I got it.
A-B-P-B.
Heartfully Bourbon's Perfect Bourbon.
We just made it.
Yes.
So obviously, we made this blend.
Yes, it was great.
It did well in our blend.
Okay.
But we made this.
Okay.
So I wouldn't say we're biased, but we need to put this to a real live test.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay.
I got an idea.
What's that?
Real test.
We share this with other people.
CYPB.
And we let them blind it with the A-B-P-B.
I like where your head's at.
Heck yeah.
A double blind.
Let the people decide.
To me, I get fruit on the nose.
It's kind of sweet.
Definitely a sweeter hint on the nose.
Not much flavor on the nose.
I don't smell much.
Not a super strong smell, but.
Definitely a lighter flavor.
Smells pretty pleasant.
Get the sweet, some fruit on there.
It's lingering a little bit on the palate.
I like that.
It's got a weird charry, like, chocolatey note to it.
I like it, but I like most whiskey, so.
Not too horrific is my code for it.
It's not going to make me super drunk at the end of the night.
Not a daily sipper for me.
I would be, this would be more of a cocktail burger for me.
Wouldn't be something I'd rush out and say, I got to find that one.
I would say slightly above average.
I wouldn't be upset if I paid $50 to $60 for that bottle.
Glaspy.
It's different.
I've got more butterscotch in here.
It still has a sweet note to it, but to me, this one is a little earthier.
Get a little bit more richness on the nose.
Like cream cheese frosting a little bit or something.
Definitely has the sweet taste beam on the front,
but finishes like a heavy, very, like, a cobbler.
I definitely get some of the, some of the fruit, some of the wood, you know, taste.
You can taste some of the oak coming out of the, you know, the barrel.
Has a little more of those mellow, oaky, charry notes.
Much more bold, rich flavors.
Maybe a little bit more proof on this one.
Both of them are easy drinking.
Third, fourth sip.
I do enjoy it more.
Yeah, there's just a fantastic finish on that.
This one actually, the more I drink this and more, this is actually good.
It's got a better finish on the end that you could taste it all the way through.
The other one is kind of like, yeah, I didn't get it.
This one, I like a lot.
Glass A is Weller CYP.
No way.
Oh, all right.
I've never had it.
I just bought one.
I don't even want to say what I paid for it.
More than 65.
Uh, yes.
It's never been one of my favorite Weller products.
Up around Peoria when I was up there, $430 on the shelf.
It was sitting.
Glass B is Artfully Bourbon's Perfect Bourbon.
It is a lot better.
That's a good blend.
I never get that much vanilla on either one normally.
So that's interesting.
Wow.
Only using other Weller bottles.
If I had to go out and choose one, you told me to buy one.
I chased down your blend.
There you go.
We, we thought we made a better CYPB.
And yes, the people agree.
Yes, they did.
Yes.
The ABPB.
30% Weller 12.
50% Old Antique 107.
And 20% Bulletproof.
If you got the bottles, make it and then let us know what you think.
Yes.
Blend it up.
And if you actually think you can beat it.
Good luck.
Drop your blend in the comments below.
Yeah.
Make sure to like the video.
Subscribe if you haven't already.
And as always, stay curious and always drink responsibly.
Peace out, friends.
I'm killing it.
You want to make some more?
Let's move.
Blend it up.
Hey, what's the over under on time?
No, it's 45 minutes at least.
