This was UGLY from the Bills

Video Summary
AI GeneratedDespite a sloppy performance marked by five turnovers and ten penalties, the Buffalo Bills defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16 to remain undefeated at 3-0. While the win keeps them atop their division, the game highlighted significant concerns regarding Josh Allen's decision-making and overall team discipline.
This was an ugly game from the Buffalo Bills today, as the
Bills had a performance to forget with multiple turnovers,
a ton of penalties, and downright bad play from Josh Allen.
Yet, despite all of that, the Bills came away with a win over
the Los Angeles Chargers and improved to 3-0 on the season
and stayed undefeated.
So we've got a lot to talk about today.
So we're going to get right into things and welcome in everybody
to Bills Digest.
I'm Ben Volker and here at Bills Digest,

Bills, whether it be news, analysis, reactions like this, or
rumors.

bad, go ahead and hit subscribe and stay up to date on content
just like this. And boy, despite the win, the Bills are 3-0.
It does not really feel like that right now because the Bills
just were ugly out there their entire performance.
It reflected the jerseys that they were wearing.
Just not good all-around football from the Buffalo Bills.
But despite that, they are 3-0.
They do win and I just have a mixed bag of opinions on this
game because what do you even take away from this?
Yes, the Bills are 3-0.
They did win 24-16.
They are still in first place in their division.
They're one of two 3-0 teams now with the Kansas City Chiefs
waiting to see what the Raiders do later today.
But all things considered, the Bills should not have won this
game because they had 10 penalties, five turnovers.
This is not listed here, but Josh Allen was sacked four times.
There was two dropped interceptions in the secondary.
How did the Bills end up winning this thing?
I'm still asking myself that right now because look, through
three quarters of action, this Bills team just looked slow.
They looked lethargic.
It looks like the Chargers were just the better team in general,
even though they didn't even look that good either.
They looked better than the Bills and it all started in the
first half.
The first half was just atrocious from the Bills, for the most
part, at least.
They started the first half with three turnovers and that's
shocking considering that through the first two games, they
had zero turnovers and could just do whatever they felt like
on offense.
That was not the case here today, which is so shocking to
me because look, they had 10 days to prepare for this game
coming off of the Lions win on Thursday night.
They had all the time in the world.
There's no excuse for how the Bills came out playing today.
It all started on the James Cook fumble, first play from
scrimmage of the game and you just could tell right away that
oh boy, here we go.
It is, this is going to be a trap game and it didn't get any
better from there.
The Chargers went down the field, scored a touchdown.
The Bills punted the ball and then next time the Bills had
possession, Josh Allen interception.
Next time the Bills had possession after that, another Josh
Allen interception and look guys, let's just, let's just say
it, Josh Allen did not play good football today.
He was not a good quarterback.
He looked more like 2018 Josh Allen than 2024 MVP Josh Allen
and every year Josh Allen has a few games like this where we
see the old Josh Allen who never developed into the quarterback
that he is today and that's making stupid throws downfield
and making dumb decisions that end up in costly turnovers and
we saw that here today and despite all of that, the Bills
were tied with the Chargers at halftime.
I couldn't believe it.
It was insane.
And then the Chargers get the ball at the start of the second
half. They go down, kick a field goal.
What do the Bills do?
Josh Allen fumbles the ball.
Yeah, it was not good ball security from the Bills today.
Let's go ahead and pull up Josh Allen's stat line here so
you can see the full thing.
204 passing yards, zero passing touchdowns.
Yes, he did have two rushing touchdowns on the day that kind
of salvaged his day.
But I mean overall, this is not a MVP level performance that
you are looking out at from your quarterback.
This is not what you expect out of Josh Allen. Two interceptions
in the first half, a fumble at the start of the second half
and you were, everyone was thinking at this point.
Oh my gosh, this is, this is a disaster.
I mean, just forget it.
Move on to New England next week.
We take the loss, but there are some positives because when
Josh Allen has struggled, James Cook has stepped up in the
past.
That's how it's been and it was the same once again today.
And this is why I like James Cook so much as a running back
because when Josh Allen does have bad games, it is James
Cook. This is how it's been the past two years and this is
how it's been again this year.
He has stepped up and he did in a big, big way today. After
that fumble early on, James Cook locked in with 154 rushing
yards on 24 carries and a dagger touchdown that put things
pretty much out of reach from the Chargers from that point
there. And yeah, two back-to-back games with 130 plus
rushing yards and a touchdown.
James Cook is back once again.
People thought maybe he was going to have less of a role
this time after his, after his great 2025 season, but that
does not seem to be the case.
James Cook is back once again.
And look, I also got to give a shout out here to our defense.
I know there was issues with this defense overall and that
they were not perfect.
They were giving up a few big plays.
They were sloppy.
They committed penalties.
But when it mattered most, they did deliver because look,
the fact that they were able to only allow 16 points on
five turnovers, you got to admit, is pretty impressive.
And look, I know there was some dropped interceptions.
There was a pass from Justin Herbert that was right in
Maxwell Hairston's hands that he just ended up, ended up
dropping. D Alford had a similar one later in the game.
But when it mattered most, the Bills did get that interception
and look, guys, C.J.
Garner Johnson had a very, very good game for the Bills today
with five tackles, two pass deflected, and of course, the
game-changing interception.
This was when the Chargers were driving downfield.
It looked like they were the ones that were going to put
the dagger in the Bills.
But then C.J.
Garner Johnson came out of nowhere, picked off Justin
Herbert, flipped the field, and set the Bills up for that
James Cook rushing touchdown for the dagger on the Bills
side of things.
And this, I mean, look, say what you will about the Bills
defense. I know there's a lot to critique. The defensive
line was not great for the most part and especially against
a beat-up and bad Chargers offensive line.
They should have done more.
Dion Walker had a game to forget and that hurts because I've
been a Dion Walker truther from the start of the season, but
he did not play great today.
But C.J.
Garner Johnson had a great game and another defensive
player that had yet another great game was Greg Russo.
Once again, eight tackles, four tackles for loss, three QB
hits, and once again, two sacks.
So if you're counting, that is two sacks in each of his
first three games, which is the most sacks through three
games in Bills history.
That's more than Bruce Smith.
Greg Russo is off to a monster start to his 2026 campaign
and he played a massive role in shutting down this
Chargers offense every single time that the Bills offense
committed a turnover and put the defense back on the field
and look, it was a tough task for the defense today with
five turnovers.
I cannot admit and it seemed like the defense was out
there all the time throughout the first three quarters.
It wasn't until the C.J.
Garner Johnson interception that things really, really started
to turn around.
But man, they aren't going to be able to get away with
this style of win every week.
The Chargers are a bad team.
They did not play good football once again today.
When you play tougher teams on the Bills schedule, this
style of football is not going to win them games.
Try this football against the Rams in two weeks.
There's no way it's going to happen.
But anyways, it's on to week four now against the Patriots
and you know what?
Seeing how the Patriots played today.
Maybe this style of football would be good enough to beat
the Patriots.
It probably would be considering how bad, straight-up bad
Drake May has been playing at this point, but let me know
what you guys think from today's game.
I know there is you guys probably have a lot of strong
thoughts.
Let me know down in the comments what you think but keep
it right here on Bills Digest because we will have a ton
more content coming out for you recapping this game going
forward and then of course looking ahead to week four against
the Patriots.
We'll have a ton of content coming your way there.
So as always, thanks for watching.
Of course, Go Bills!
