The rise of IPL - How BCCI became the richest Cricket Board in the World
Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has grown exponentially in terms of revenue. In the inaugural season, the IPL generated around $190 million in revenue. Fast forward to 2023, and the IPL's total revenue was estimated to be over $1 billion per season. So, where does all this money come from?
The biggest chunk of IPL’s revenue comes from the sale of media rights. Back in 2008, Sony Entertainment Television secured the broadcasting rights for the first 10 years for $1.03 billion. Fast forward to 2017, and the landscape had changed dramatically. Star India won the global media rights for the 2018-2022 cycle for a staggering $2.55 billion.
But that was just the beginning. In 2022, the IPL media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle were auctioned for a jaw-dropping $6.2 billion. This includes digital rights, which alone fetched more than $3 billion, showing how much the market has shifted towards online viewership. This significant leap in media rights value highlights the IPL’s growing popularity, not just in India but globally.
