When we picture the great empires of India, we look north — the Mauryas, the Guptas, the Mughals. But nearly a thousand years ago, far to the south, an empire rose that did something none of them ever managed. It built a navy, crossed a thousand miles of open ocean, and conquered an empire in what is now Indonesia. It turned the Bay of Bengal into its private lake, traded with China, ran its villages by secret ballot, and cast bronze gods so perfect they are still worshipped today.
