Today is such a special one in the garden! Our English-inspired cottage garden is really beginning to come to life, and this might be one of my favorite transformations yet. We’re planting our beautiful hydrangea standards from My Patio Tree and finally installing the fountain we traveled to Washington to bring home. I’ve been dreaming about this moment since we started creating this garden, and seeing the fountain in place completely transformed the entire space. It finally feels like the garden I’ve had in my head all along. We’re also talking about why fall is such a wonderful time to plant trees and shrubs, cooler temperatures make it a great opportunity to get plants established before next season. A huge shoutout to MyPatioTree for partnering with me on this project! There is still SO much planting to come, roses, boxwood spheres, perennials and all those beautiful cottage garden layers, but today feels like a huge milestone. I can’t wait for you to see it! 💞 Claudia #gardening#gardendesign#garden
A couple enhances their English-inspired cottage garden in the Pacific Northwest by planting \"Quick Fire\" hydrangea standards and installing a large garden fountain. The project focuses on strategic placement for aesthetic appeal, utilizing advanced root technology for plant health, and carefully positioning the fountain to complement the garden's natural flow and interior views.
What do you think?
I can't enjoy it in this current position.
Hey, guys. Welcome back.
Today, we are going to be working out in the English cottage garden.
I am so happy to be back.
We've been away from our garden for a couple of days and I missed it so much.
I can't wait to just get more things planted in this space.
So today we are going to be planting some hydrangea standards
and we're going to be putting in the fountain.
Can't wait. I'm so excited.
I've been waiting for this moment for months.
I know a lot of you have been asking about it, too.
So I am excited that we are going to bring the fountain back.
So you're going to try to do it together.
I don't know if this is going to work.
If so, I might have to call my little brother to come over,
but we're going to give it give it a go first.
We are playing a little bit of plant shuffling around here,
because if we recall in our last video, we were talking about putting in
our gorgeous spire wall crab apples in this space.
And we also have some gorgeous hydrangea to get in here.
But we also have these stunning hydrangea standards
that we got from my patio tree a while ago,
and I've been waiting to get them planted in this space.
Back in early spring, we actually took a whole tour of the facility
where they grow all of the trees for my patio tree,
and it was unbelievable to see their entire operation.
You guys recall we walked around, we interviewed one of the owners,
and it was so, so much fun.
We actually ordered a bunch of trees from them
that we were going to be planting out in our garden.
We have some lilacs.
We have let's see, I ordered a hibiscus for our neighbor,
which I did plant out in her garden.
And we also have our hydrangea standards that we're going to be planting out today.
These standards were begging to be in this space.
Originally, I was going to plant them in containers,
but after looking at them and see how they look in the landscape,
I just thought this is going to be the right home for them.
The one that I decided to go with is the quick fire panicle hydrangea.
You guys have probably seen these before.
You might even have some of these in your gardens.
And of course, a hydrangea standard, I think,
is going to fit into that really pretty cottage garden vibe.
So quickly, the specs on this one is going to get six to eight feet tall and wide.
Now, of course, we plan to keep the standard in a standard form
and really kind of a tight form.
I don't want it to get too overly big.
I mean, of course, we do want it to grow out,
but I'm not going to let it get to six feet wide or eight feet wide.
That's just not the plan for this tree.
And they do take really well to pruning, which is nice.
You can see that they've been pruned already.
That's why they're not blooming.
I can actually see some blooms forming.
So maybe they'll still bloom this season before the season is over.
Anyways, six to eight feet tall and wide.
They're hardy in zones three through eight.
These do require full sun.
So this area is pretty much going to get full sun
and you're going to have already placed them out.
My patio tree also has some other varieties of hydrangea standards,
which I will link down below for you guys.
But this one just seemed to fit the vibe the best.
I do like how this starts out as a creamy white
and then it ages into that like really soft raspberry look.
So I'm thinking it's going to look really pretty,
kind of spread out throughout the space.
So this is what we were thinking to have one on that side next to the
amber ghost Japanese maple, which is in the container,
which is going to live there.
I also thought about doing a really pretty espalier
on that back wall, because if like if I'm looking at it from right here,
it's such a big wall without a window.
Our primary bath is right there.
And then our bedroom is right over behind this wall over here.
However, we need to find something that's going to be able
to withstand a little bit of shade because it's going to be
kind of under the awning over there.
Is that the awning? Is that what we call that?
Am I saying it right?
I don't want to say the wrong thing.
Huh? I don't want to say the wrong thing.
Anyways, I know that's what that is.
So anyways, one over there and then the other one
is going to be right over here,
which I think is going to fit the space really well.
You know what I really like about the one over here?
That one that it kind of covers up the whole gutter situation.
Yes. And it doesn't allow you to peek through.
Like what what is in the cut flower garden? Right.
You know, it it invites you through the pathway
instead of getting a sneak peek. Right.
And also that gutter is going to be replaced.
Of course, that's just kind of our like Jimmy Riggs situation.
But we still will have a gutter there.
But it's going to be like elbowed in and then down.
So that's kind of our idea behind this.
And of course, we still have the other hydrangea shrubs
that will drop in.
We're still debating on the crab apples,
but I think we found a new home for it in the front,
which I'm very excited about.
And then right behind Sergei is where we have our third hydrangea standard.
But I don't know if we're going to put it there.
I think Sergei is really excited about having it here.
My only problem is I was thinking to do more of like a shrub situation right here.
I do have another place for this out in the front.
But I'm curious to know what you guys think.
So I don't think we should plant this one today.
But you were kind of like you want it over here.
Yeah, I thought it would be
kind of a nice kind of welcome.
Yeah, you're starting to enter.
But I also think something lower growing would be better.
That way you're not going to like hit in the face with something big.
Yeah. And yeah.
And then this I want I want this container to shine a little bit more.
Potato vine really took over.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of it anymore.
It's like it started out pretty, but now it's just too much.
So the other reason, like having the hydrangea standard here
is it won't really block your
pedestal.
Oh, yeah. The stand. Yeah.
Versus having something kind of lower growing.
It will look like three, four feet up.
You're going to block the view.
Oh, yeah. That is a good idea.
But but still the idea of putting this in the other location
in the front, I think I like it better.
OK, worst case scenario, we can just get another one.
All right. So I think let's go ahead and plant those two.
And then let's bring back
or attempt to bring back the fountain.
Just the two of us. We'll see how that goes.
There weren't any surprises of that when you're digging, was there? No.
Fall is one of the best times to plant anything in your garden
just because the soil is still warm and there's plenty of time
for things to take root.
So if you guys are interested in ordering any trees
from my patio tree, I actually have a really great code that I asked them
for you guys. So I'm going to link that down below.
Anyways, I just wanted to call that out in case you are interested
in ordering anything for your garden.
It really is like the second wave of planting right now,
which is so fun.
I don't know about you guys,
but I am in complete plant planting mode.
And I'm going to plant this a little bit high just because we have
quite a bit of compost to bring in.
How does that look?
Oh, a little crooked.
Does that look OK, Trega?
Checking, um, maybe.
Yeah, right there. Yeah, right there.
Right when you let go.
Let me check the other angle.
Yeah, I think so.
OK, the branching on this one is so perfect.
Let's just water it in so it can like, yes, yes.
Cool.
I was just mentioning how it's been raining for the last few days, so
just the whole was so easy.
It didn't look dry inside.
No, it was perfect.
Thank you.
That's a really nice.
Isn't it? So green.
The stems, they're just, they look fresh.
I know. And if you do end up ordering them, just keep in mind
that they probably are pruned up before because of shipping.
You guys saw the boxes that they came in.
So don't be alarmed if they are pruned up and you don't have any blooms on it.
That's all fine.
For me, I really admire the roots on these.
Actually, I'll show it to you on the other one since I planted this one.
That was one of the things that Chris talked to us about is
how they put a lot of thought into the way they grow all of their trees
to have really fantastic
root structures, which I like, because sometimes you'll get a tree
and you look at the roots and it's like nothing there.
Kind of like our store there.
Remember, it was just like a ball.
Like there was the roots weren't developed.
That looks way too easy.
It's like prime soil digging conditions like
this I could do all day, every day.
Here are the roots.
Look at that.
That is gold.
That is what you want when you're buying a tree.
It's because they use these grow bags
to grow all of their trees.
And right before they ship it to you, they strip the bags off.
Like you showed it to us.
Remember? Yeah. On camera.
So let me nerd out for just a sec here.
So because they are in those grow bags and also in a open container,
when these roots reach the side of the grow bags,
instead of hitting plastic, like traditionally grown,
those roots don't spiral like they do in a traditional container.
They actually split off and create these small, tiny little roots everywhere,
which these are the like the feeder roots that you want for your trees
or any of your plants.
So it's a really cool technology and a way of growing things.
Because if you think about it, think about how much further advance
this tree is compared to something that's just completely root
bound and just spiraling in circles.
So, again, I appreciate things like that.
I appreciate that they've really thought everything through.
And you end up not only with the beautiful tree up top,
but these great root structures down below, which to me
is even more important than what's going on up top in the beginning.
And those smaller roots are good because those are the ones that feed better.
So instead of having, again, those big, thick spiraling roots,
these are all going to feed, first of all, on our bioton a lot better.
And then anything that's in the soil, all of the good stuff
that it's going to need to grow beautifully for us.
The human leveler.
OK, that looks good.
Whatever you did right there, that looks good.
And yeah, towards the house, just like this, right?
Yeah, right there.
It's like not even an inch.
But once you grow things good from the beginning or you plant it good.
Then you're not fighting it later on.
I was waiting for you to be like, yeah, I taught you that.
Some smart remark.
I didn't have to say it.
You already know that I'm living in your head.
Oh, you're done.
What do you think? Yeah, that's good.
Look good. I want to remove those.
Yeah, let's do that.
We'll do it. We'll do it.
Let's water it in.
I actually got two of these for my uncle, too.
He's excited.
These are going to go in containers.
Those are gorgeous trees, that's for sure.
OK.
Okey dokey.
Let's do the heavy lifting now, huh?
No, thank you.
Just kidding. Let's get the fountain.
OK, also, this space is going to be the next project
because it has become a catch all for everything.
Our tools, the wood, the remaining wood for the gates.
And yeah, we know it's going to be it's coming.
Something else is coming over here.
OK, ready?
Oh, I think it's... Wait, is it going to...
Let's move it over.
OK.
What are you afraid of?
Like that.
Oh, it's just bending it out.
OK, and you're sure it's going to be fine?
100 percent.
Oh, no, I already tore it over here.
But if you think it's going to be fine.
Work?
Yep.
My gosh, the wheels are also like, squish.
Yeah, they need air.
Yeah.
I will say this gorilla cart has been...
We had it for how long?
Yeah, we've put it through some stuff.
Minimum?
I think so, yeah.
Because the other one we gave to our friends.
Careful, because there's a sprinkler head right there.
Yeah, this sucker has served its purpose.
The moment of truth.
Oh, it's barely going to go.
Oh, yeah.
We got our fountain at Fleur Delors Gardens.
So if you guys are interested or curious about it, that's where it's from.
We actually did a video there shopping together for it.
I'll link that down below if you didn't see it.
And if you're curious to see other fountains that they have.
Yeah, so I know we talked about having it like straight on with the window.
And then when I was inside kind of looking just an hour ago,
I realized that it would have to be right there.
Right.
That's a little tight.
So even though that is over here, we still,
I think the fountain would be placed about here.
Right. And I think so, too, because it also kind of goes with the curve,
like that little curve of the pathway, which was more important to me
than having it aligned directly with the bathroom.
OK, so I'm going to move this right here. OK.
Do you think we do need them, though?
Like when you saw installs, did they all use them?
I don't know.
OK, back up a little more.
OK.
OK, pull it up.
If we put this here, it will come out.
Yeah, far.
Do you want it that close to the pathway?
Do you do you think the fountain will look better right there?
Like here?
I think a little bit this way and then like right here.
Is this going to be in the way of this?
That doesn't matter.
No. OK. Yeah, that does. Covered up.
OK. Yeah, I like that better, don't you?
What? No, I don't got it.
Do you think? I love it.
Yeah. You don't want it closer to the path?
I think just a little bit. Yeah.
I actually like it where it's at.
Maybe I think. Yeah.
So are you going to plant anything here?
Of course. OK.
So you have space to plant. Mm hmm.
If you move it, you're going to either spill over
or you're going to be right underneath.
Yeah. What happened?
I said, I'm a good car driver, not cart driver.
This is a good leg workout.
Holy moly.
Good turn.
Somebody's barbecuing.
We haven't eaten dinner yet.
It's definitely leaning.
Well, obviously, this is not this is just a try on.
This is not the final.
Wow. First thought.
First comment.
I am so happy we went with this, quote unquote, bigger one.
Yeah, because it looked huge.
It's not big, right?
It's well, it fits the space. Perfect.
Yeah. Like, I mean, could have pulled off even a bigger one.
Probably. But I'm also like, take it back.
Take it back. Just kidding.
I'm going to go on the inside.
It really bothers me that it's not level yet.
But I know we're just.
It looks violent.
Wow. Look at that lighting in the.
That's beautiful.
Can I talk now?
OK. She's in the bathroom.
OK, we it's so funny to see.
I'm filming you.
And I'm filming you.
OK, so we're in my bathroom and I'm looking out the window.
You see, it's a little bit off to the left.
But even if we went to the right, we're still going to have this
kind of blocking the view.
Gosh, how does it look?
Huh? How does it look?
You know, I almost feel like you should go a little bit to the left
or we have to go a few inches to the right.
Explain that theory.
I'm coming in. OK.
He's like, I'm coming in.
OK, turn off the light so maybe you can see a little bit better.
What do you think, Sergei?
OK, it just right now is sitting perfectly behind
the faucet, the faucet.
Yeah. And I think if you shift it like five, six inches to the left.
I think, you know, if we move it five, six inches to the left,
it'll be better positioned one away from the faucet, two away from the Stordia.
It'll just look right.
I think so, too.
OK. We definitely had it too much to love before.
I think six inches.
Because it doesn't make sense to move the story and go directly behind.
No. The faucet.
That would be funny, right?
Like this is going to be offside.
And, you know, in the event when we are taking a bath,
usually our head is here and we're looking out there.
So I'm going to give it a try.
I'm going to take a bath.
OK. What do you think?
I can't enjoy it in this current position.
It needs to be.
I mean, even like even a foot, a foot, but that might be too much.
And maybe I think like five, six inches. Yeah.
It's still not level right now.
Well, obviously, let's go level it.
So I'm going to just set up here, kind of like the angle of the bathroom.
That way we can kind of show that we're shifting it just ever so slightly.
OK. Now we have to level every part of it.
Wow.
Were you thinking like it's not going to be level?
Yeah, of course not.
I mean, we should probably add a little shim because it wobbles a little bit.
A little bit. Doesn't it?
Like ever so, but yeah, we do have those little shims.
Maybe just like ever so slightly and see if it's still level.
FYI, this is our first fountain installation.
First ever. Yeah.
Knock on wood, it's going well.
Put your hand in there. Got it? Got it? Got it.
So this is the pump.
And we are putting the little rubber feet on it.
I'm going to put this rubber stopper or seal.
And now we're going to lubricate it with some dish soap.
You can use Vaseline, but we don't have that.
That's perfect.
Look at us, we're getting good at this.
Pathways, fountains.
Well, here, can I can I help you?
Perfect. It's like a tiny little.
Too much. Here we go.
Oh, I hear the pump. Oh, it's coming.
There he goes.
OK, guys, it's the next day.
It started to get a little bit dark last night,
and we wanted to be able to show you how the fountain looks in the daytime.
Oh, my gosh. I am so obsessed.
I can't believe I have a fountain.
My sink in my kitchen is not installed yet, but I have a fountain.
Priorities, right?
Look at how beautiful it looks.
You guys, can you believe that I have a fountain in my garden?
Like, I know this might not be a big deal to a lot of people,
but you have no idea how long I've been wanting one.
This is so exciting.
And now I get the whole rave about having fountains and gardens.
Like, I never thought I'd be into it as much as I am.
It's so exciting.
Oh, my gosh. We love it.
I love the size.
I love the height.
It's really the perfect fountain for our garden.
I'm obsessed with this fountain.
I'm so happy that we got to go down and see it in person,
pick it out and bring it home.
Like, big shout out to Fleur Delos Gardens
for just making such gorgeous products.
Look at that.
We have a fountain.
I just want to show you from all angles how she looks.
I do have to come and fill it up more.
And we are playing around with the
with the pump to see how much more flow we want.
So we do need to fill it up with more water.
That way we get a uniform drip with all different tiers.
So I'm going to continue filling that up.
I was just so excited.
I was like, I just want to see. I just want to see it.
Anyways, I did see a little bird out here earlier today.
I want to see if I can get it on camera, but it's been so much fun
just to see like wildlife around this area.
So I'm hoping more and more we'll see it and realize
that we have this water source for them now.
Having this fountain really makes it feel like a true
English inspired cottage garden right here in the Pacific Northwest.
I absolutely adore it.
I cannot wait to just enjoy it for seasons to come.
I mean, what an amazing new addition to our garden.
I keep catching myself flicking out the window every time I go to the bathroom.
Like, oh, there it is. I can hear it.
It's been such a fun like toy for us, I guess.
And of course, with the addition of the new hydrangea trees,
I am so pleased with these.
I do need to come in and water.
I know these are going to just fill in so beautifully.
I cannot wait to just have those pretty panicles and blooms on these trees
as they continue to grow.
I did reach out to my patio tree and ask them if we could have a discount code.
And they were so gracious.
They are giving us a discount code, which I'll put up on the screen for you.
And I'll also link it down in the description box.
Again, you can order it now so you can take advantage of the code
and then you can set the delivery date for a later time.
But again, fall is like the perfect time to plant trees,
shrubs, perennials, any of those things.
So I recommend if you are interested in getting like hydrangeas, hibiscus,
lilacs, anything like that, anything that they have,
the code is good for everything.
Again, I'll link all of those details down in the description box for you guys.
We are still debating on the crab apples this morning.
So again, we're talking and he said, well, I feel like we could
actually add three more trees back here.
I just don't want to overload this area with trees.
But I'm also thinking about spring interest.
I feel like those crab apples would bring so much beautiful spring interest
and they are aspire crab apples.
So they're going to stay really narrow.
I don't know. You guys let us know.
I feel like string and air kind of like not disputing it,
but we're having a deep discussion about it, if it makes sense.
And we've sketched it up to to see how it would look.
And it does look beautiful.
But again, there are so many like gorgeous shrubs and hydrangeas
that I want to bring in here.
So still deciding on that.
I don't even know what else to say.
I just want to like stand here with you and look at the fountain together.
This is like going to become my new personality.
Let's go out here and let's just walk so we can see how it looks.
OK, ready?
So you're coming in to the back, of course.
Everything's going to be pretty here.
The mulch plants, boxwoods, et cetera.
You're going to see the fountain right away.
And we're going to have some hydrangeas over here, too.
So you don't see the whole thing right away.
And then we're walking.
We're relaxing.
We're enjoying our stroll.
We're admiring the garden, talking plants.
And then you walk by and you see the fountain.
Give it a little splash, splash.
Continue on into the rest of the garden.
Now, I'm thinking we also need like a bench or something over here,
even if it's just one little chair, just to come out and enjoy this,
because it's so, so good.
Anyways, I think that will do it for today's garden project.
I am so pleased with how everything went.
Honestly, installing the fountain wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be.
I really thought it was going to be like this big challenge,
but it's not bad at all.
We do need to work on the power outlet because right now
we have this long extension cord going to the little deck.
We have an outlet right here, which we're going to feed
right underneath the path, like right underneath some of those stones.
And then it will just connect right back there.
We just need the electrician to come out because for some reason,
that outlet is not working.
So we're going to get it checked out to see what we need to do to get it to work.
That way it will be a short little crossover to get it all plugged in.
Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed seeing this fountain come together
and getting those hydrangeas planted.
Let me know if you guys have any questions.
Thank you again so much for hanging out with me today in my garden.
And I will see you guys in the next video. Bye bye.
