oh a nice big coin i wonder if it's roman don't know oh could be could it be here we are on the
plane with these two wonderful pilots who are going to take us to Alderney hello in june 2022
i traveled to the beautiful island of Alderney one of the channel islands to do some metal detecting
with sy fines all right mud lovers how you doing can't wait to get out there get detecting
chill bill this is my excited face this is my excited face this is my excited face
this is my excited face is the best signal so far and it's in the clump our wonderful host
jim jim's just holding the cows off whilst i dig a signal he was almost eaten a minute ago
i've got to watch those cows and also ed maybe it's some kind of um it is golden diamond yeah
some kind of medieval treasure chest okay i'll look forward to um seeing that when it's clear
ed by the way has contributed some absolutely beautiful drone footage to this video so do
stick around to watch that because you might regret it if you don't and i'll be popping up
now and then to show you around the island and also to show you our favorite metal detecting
so let's get started so we're on our way for the first day of detecting yeah baby
it's a real mishmash of uh of history here so i can't wait i can see the field it's right there
oh look oh there it is and it's all freshly moan as well mode is it modal mode
serious question though is it mode or moan was the grass mode or moan
let's get some luck in the muck let's do it getting lots of fun finds
it just came up which is a anchor buckle piece and that would be part of a buckle
and that would go into the cloth there and that would be on the buckle
or something like that and over there is sy fines and nicola white from tideline art doing their
yeah so i've just um called simon over to have a look at this and see
what he thinks and he tells me it's a little brooch so i'm gonna give it a little squirt
some water and um see what's underneath so i can see a couple of little gems little like enamel
yeah so there's a couple of little um what's names yeah oh look at that yeah so maybe some
kind of maybe george oh yeah isn't it cute well done that's nice so simon as a detectorist and
slightly better than me you've had a lot more experience what's the best thing to do now i
mean i've got a little brush can i brush it give a little brush off i don't want to yeah that's
fine you gotta get you gotta get the mud out there anyway so water and a brush is perfect
yeah you need to be careful as there's stones coming out okay well we get a good idea of what
it is there don't we that's lovely now my second find of the day is this lovely military button
here royal artillery by the looks of it yeah it's nice isn't it oh nice big coin well i wonder if
it's roman dunno oh could be could it be oh that's unusual no it's not um obviously not roman
anyway let me give you a quick squirt and come back to you hey it's really chunky though really
chunky coin that's nice right so after a quick um wash and a google pretty sure this is five
centines nice chunky coin there even the milled edge looks beautiful doesn't it yeah i think this
is a lovely chunky coin and uh sadly that's why i was a bit worn but you know she's all there
i did take a little nick out of it there but um never mind these things happen
musket pistol i presume no that's the smallest one i've seen for a long time so that one's a pistol
i believe so yeah and a musket yeah look at the difference in size interesting
Alderney is steeped in history from roman ruins to victorian and german forts in the 1850s 18
forts and batteries were built to protect Alderney and the remains of german wartime
defences built during the second world war is still to be discovered all across the island
it's also the only place in the uk that had concentration camps on it during the second
world war there were four concentration camps each holding up to 1500 people
digging up a lot of bullets which is hardly surprising given the the wartime history of
Alderney and i've also just unearthed what looks like a larger shell i think you would call it a
here this is my excited face this is my excited face i've got a coin here i've never found a
coin like this and it's got writing on it it's exciting writing it seems to say one pistol
i don't know what that is but anyway i kind of rings a bell it's sort of like pirate money
pistols but this is too round and regular to be anything you know out of south of america
but anyway it's a tiny little coin it might even be silver probably not but anyway have a look so
there it is it's actually really small it says one pistol for the hexa something or other i don't
know what it says to be honest and on the other side currently it says nothing so i'm going to
clean it up and see what we've got so our lovely host jim just found this ring which is an ihs
ring and i believe that means something like under the protection of jesus christ our savior
and this looks like something from the late 1600s early 1700s for sure and it's the sort
of ring that jesuits used to give to the native americans as if you've seen green mountain
detecting you'll see in finding these and the native americans get browned off with the jesuits
and snap them and throw them away but this is exactly the sort of ring and i would say i mean
it could be as late as early 1800s but it could be as early as the late 1600s probably in the
middle somewhere but anyway lovely find so this is jim who's found this and who's our lovely host
for this wonderful treasure hunting extravaganza and he just found the find of the day
a wonderful religious ring well done jim this is my confused face just found this
it's a big lead lumpo for something or other if you know post below yeah big round lead lumpo
so there's jim over there he's actually searching for his iphone which he lost a little while ago
and i in the meantime have found a part of a coin which does have something on it
i've not seen one like this before so i'm not quite sure i'm not quite sure what this is
model something oops i like that look so there's is it victoria no it's not so there's a
a head there and on the other side looks like the fleur de lys and a crown last jim hi jim
i've found this part of a coin i might ask you if you know what it might be if you know where my
phone is oh you poor thing that's so annoying it could be anywhere up down this yeah track so
that's a task clam it's quite nice isn't it it's nice isn't it yeah um i've not seen one like this
it's nice having some nice signals in this field actually look i have just found the tiniest
little heart isn't that lovely i wonder if that was part of a locket once upon a time
oh that's beautiful number 20 of the trip i'm happy now i've reached 20 coins there's 10 each
day i'm here but this one's a real cracker come and check this out look at that beast
it's like a georgian oh that's nice britannia is it's good old georgian
what i recognized it let's give me a quick splash blush and have a look at the detail
well what a cracker george the second and a lovely looking britannia on the other side
probably about 1770 that sort of era well jim is having a little rest over there
simon's over there and i'm here next to a hole and i've just pulled out this
i'm not sure what it is but it's very decorative and i really like it possibly some kind of cat
badge maybe or something military anyway i've just brushed it off a little bit and i've just
realized what it is it's a lion's face there look can you see that that looks like his paw
and yeah it's like a lion's face let me get it in the camera there we go that is so beautiful
i love it i absolutely love that i think that's got to be my favorite find
oh isn't it gorgeous look it's like a little lion as well that is spectacular
it is oh i love it first of all i couldn't see the lion face at first
oh that is what is that a cat badge it's got to be all right yeah
yeah it's magnificent that's lovely well done nick thank you
okay so maybe you don't get lions here but alderney and the surrounding islands are a haven
for wildlife it's the home of the rare blonde hedgehog and yes you heard me right blonde
hedgehog it's a thing look it up and there are also some impressive gannet and puffin colonies
now can you see behind me there in the distance a rock surrounded by seabirds flying around well
that's gannet rock let's take a break from metal detecting a moment and go and take a closer look
and thank you very much to ed staffing for the drone footage we've taken a little break from
detecting to come and visit gannet rock which is out there and there's thousands thousands of
gannets on this rock completely nesting so thousands of couples of gannets and there's
such beautiful birds i was hoping to see some diving into the sea to catch their food
you can see over there it's just teeming with gannets and you can actually smell them
here the wind blowing this aroma of gannets
yes the aroma of gannets yeah it's just really stunning who needs
mechanics tracking when you've got nickel or white who needs nickel or white when you've
got the aroma of gannets thank you i thought the smell was clean but obviously not
it's got a coin sort of feel to it and now it's just popped a coin oh that's nice
to recognize that you know let me give it a quick squirt and i'll get back to you
well it's quite an interesting coin i'm not sure what it is a nice little triangle though and a
crown above it i don't know what it is but i know a man who may do that's a that's a cesium
oh you know it yeah it's a cesium what's that there's a cesium it's six six whatever cesium
is it sees under to our catcher saying sees cesium he's got the two two two six
and it's from 1680 oh wow yeah and it's in great nick because normally they're completely
completely polished on both sides excellent what amazing find uncommon i've forgotten the name of
right let's take that knowledge with us yes got a great find but i've just found something too
i'm really excited look look at this isn't it lovely maybe some kind of military badge maybe
but whatever it is it's absolutely beautiful i love it looks quite delicate so i'm
just gonna put it safely away oh i really really like that gosh it's quite mangled isn't it but
you can see that lovely design on there i wonder what that is it looks as if it was
it's got that little loop there looks like it might have been hung
hung on a chain or something i don't know maybe jim will know or maybe simon will know
as always my pinpoint in this rubbish doesn't want to be iron you know it doesn't want to
come out whatever it is there it is is it a wheel hub
oh that's really really annoying that's a really good find i think i need to give it to you i think
you deserve it you've been looking for one of those thank you that's really nice of you look
at that everyone clement's given me this isn't that so really nice of him that's really really
nice wow jim's got find oh wow you have got a lovely cat badge cornwall cornwall how strange
is that yeah present oh my gosh thank you so much look at that it's a wheel cap
it's a nice cat badge with cornwall on it isn't that amazing thank you oh nice
cornwall that's where i come from i grew up in cornwall not dissimilar from here in a way
except that it's on the mainland wow don't lean back too much don't lean back too much
right well this is my third good signal and
this isn't a coin looks like a button but i can't make out what that is on there
maybe it's not a button maybe it's the lid for something i don't know a little bit of a mystery
there oh is that a horse do you know what that might be that i don't know i don't know i shall
pop it in my bag get it later well i'll be lucky look at this beautiful view i don't think i've
ever detected in anywhere so beautiful and i've just found a coin oh wow
oh my gosh so you have look at that what is it wow let's give it a squirt
i think my detector just gave up for the day
it might be an eight uh an eight thingy bob and one of those oh is it yeah coin
jim oh well you know i think it might be george it might be a george penny i think it is 1932
or something maybe i think that at george the fifth yeah it'll be nice fantastic
well done simon some people get luck in the muck wherever they go and sy fines is one of those
people whether that be in a field or on the edge of a cliff and he's absolutely right the scenery
in alderney is really quite breathtaking and spectacular wherever you look it's particularly
breathtaking when you're looking down below into the swirling sea but you know what there's one
thing i've been dying to do since i arrived here that is go for a swim and so it's time to head
for the beach i don't in my mind i was doing the most incredible graceful swimming performance
there but it just wasn't to be hello how are you we're going to detect in your field
what do you think yes i agree
nice to meet you well see you later great excitement everyone i have found a coin and i can
see lettering on there i think it might be one of these when i was going to say i can just see
is it i don't know do you know what that is jim
hugely exciting most of the coins i've found i think quite flat it's not a dupe it's a french
don't know i'll have to check that out something third is that liard or that's
what i thought it was leo but i don't it could be i don't know there's a um
person on there isn't there proof of someone okay well i'll pop it in my
my little box and grounds like concrete absolutely like concrete oh you've got a button
it took me about 10 minutes to dig it well very pleased jim's just holding the cows off whilst i
dig a signal he was almost eaten a minute ago
yeah well guess what we've got another coin look at this can't quite make out what that is
but it's another coin
right that's my little pot to look at later coin number two and we've only been here a little while
it's a shame simon and clem aren't here any longer i'll have to send them photos
there we go you're a very curious bunch you lot aren't you hey
now today ed staffin is also with us and ed has just dug up something really interesting hi ed
hi good morning let's have a look at this that's really interesting isn't it what that is
there's definitely some kind of design it's on both sides too
yeah could be some kind of little shovel type object but then again i don't know it seems
roughly ornate for a shovel yeah i know you know you're right maybe it's some kind of um
maybe it's golden diamonds yeah some part of some kind of medieval treasure chest badge don't know
initials that's lovely isn't it it's always hard to read these sort of looks like maybe a
g brooch yeah some kind of brooch with initials that's really lovely yeah nice one so i've just
found a dooble is that how you pronounce it yeah a dooble and it's 1830 which is the first year
that they were issued yes wow look at that and it's in such great condition as well
fantastic third coin today so i have just dug up another coin and this one is from guernsey
and it is four doublers from 1864
you got a coin ed let's have a look oh yeah
oh i can't see jim might know what it is look i'll show you mine it's uh
doobles it's quite nice isn't it well guess what i've just found a really nice buckle here
look at that that is gorgeous i really like that that's quite an old one i think oh yeah
that's a really nice one really nice one yeah i wonder how old that is what do you think georgian
maybe georgian or george washington yeah so it's a nice um really nice nice buckle oh yeah
shape lovely one it's all intact yeah what do you think um when's that georgian yeah
that's beautiful that's a peach that's a really nice one foot or something oh yeah
i'm really happy with that right too
gonna call it a day because otherwise i won't be able to trash out the next two days because i'll
be broken well what a great bunch of people to be stuck on an island with if you're going to be
cast away on a beautiful island like alderney i can't think of any better companions to be there
and welcome to my studio everyone thank you very much for watching my video as you can see it's the
real me not a tiny me hovering down there and a real background and i hope that you enjoyed that
excursion to alderney which is the third largest of the channel islands behind guernsey and jersey
and it is one and a half miles wide and three and a half miles long so an absolutely perfect size
now as you saw between us we found some really lovely artifacts and i'm just going to show you
my favorite one and see if you might be able to tell me anything more about it
so it is this lovely lion here there is a very noble lion with his snout or his nose resting
on a paw but what did he come from is he from a cat badge is he from a walking cane a piece of
furniture or something else a brooch do you know do you recognize him if you do please put your
suggestions in the comments below i'd love to hear from you and so alderney if you haven't already
felt tempted to take a visit there to spend a little while exploring the island then may i
just repeat that it is a beautiful place to spend a few days away from the hustle and bustle
of the busy world it's one of those few remaining unspoiled places with a real
natural beauty loads of wildlife you saw all those gannets you didn't smell them but you saw them
and there's also as well as gannets there's a big colony of puffins there's seals there's
all sorts of wildlife to feast your eyes on there's also a rich mix of history loads of walking
beautiful food and drink and yeah i would highly recommend a trip there if you can just for a few
days a piece and it's completely stress-free one thing i did notice is there's hardly any traffic
at all and to top it all the people who live there are so very very friendly of course i want to give
a huge shout out to our brilliant hosts jim and sue for giving us such a wonderful time
and also to ed staffin who provided the rather magical drone footage and do wait around until
the end of this video because there is some magical drone footage to come you honestly
won't believe it i've saved the best till last but before i do go just a couple of facts about
Alderney um the first one i only recently found out and that is do you know the Wombles
were originated well they were thought up on Alderney that's where they come from they don't
come from Wimbledon at all it's not the Wombles of Wimbledon it's the Wombles of Alderney
wombling free the author Elizabeth Beresford lived on the island and thought up the Wombles there so
it's kind of appropriate that we were wombling around on Alderney collecting artifacts because
that's exactly what Wombles do so now i've got the Wombles of Wimbledon theme tune stuck in my head
so it's going to be my earworm for the rest of the day but an interesting little fact and
apparently you can actually go and see models of the Wombles in the museum in Alderney if you
haven't heard of the Wombles i'll put a picture up of them but hopefully you have i think that
they're world famous secondly i wanted to go back to the blonde hedgehogs what a beautiful
creature they are i mean we've all seen the brown hedgehogs and they're really lovely too
but Alderney has these blonde hedgehogs which are really very specific to Alderney they were
brought over in about 1960 and they've just taken off and so there are rather a lot of
blonde hedgehogs bimbling around Alderney and we were sitting out at night waiting for them to
and a lovely sight it was too so i am now going to sign off from this video i'd like to say a huge
thank you to you all again for watching and for watching my previous videos and my future videos
and also for your comments and suggestions the donations you've made to ko-fi and also thank
you for the donations which you've done to um me via super chat youtube just created this new
thing super chat and i must admit i didn't even know it was there until somebody actually
made a donation via it so thank you very much it's all very very much appreciated
and again thank you Jim and Sue for your marvelous hospitality so now over to Ed
Staffan's fantastic footage from Alderney i hope you enjoy it everyone it's
just a brilliant way to end this video thank you bye bye and see you again soon
