Having performed consistently well in Springfield, Kaskimaki brings high energy and offensive upside to a team looking to maintain momentum and integrate young talent into the lineup.
The St. Louis Blues have just made the perfect move after
a very interesting start to the season
where the second line is playing very well.
They just added some much needed depth scoring to this
lineup. We're going to break down exactly what this move is,
how it impacts the lineup moving
forward, and a great opportunity for a young player
that we've talked about before here on
the channel with great upside.
We're going to break that all down and much more on this episode
of Blues Digest. But before we get into all of that,
a quick reminder to hit that subscribe
button we've noticed that a large percentage of you guys
who watch these videos regularly are not
subscribed to the channel so if you want to stay up
to date with everything that's happening with
your St. Louis Blues make sure to hit that subscribe button
and Mark and I will keep you
updated every single day on everything that's happening
with the Blues but Mark let's get right
into it so the Blues have officially called up Kaskimaki
and he's a name that you've heard here
before on the channel we've talked about him we you know kind
of dove into who he is what he brings
to the table and what a great prospect he is the last two years
or so and especially during the
summers but they announced today Alex Dean announced
that they have recalled Kaskimaki
from the AHL and he has been playing very well
and not just i mean this season Mark like he's
been playing well this season
but take a look at the timeline right so he first gets selected by
the Blues 73rd overall
and you're like okay pretty high draft pick he has a good future
seems like a shifty player can put up some points great he
also had a small stint and we've talked
about it before in the AHL or sorry in the NHL before
and now they've recalled him what i think
is most impressive this season Mark
and we can really dive into this on what he brings to the
lineup and where he can fit in is when you look at his stats
and the timeline of him being in
the AHL he went to the AHL two seasons ago
and he put up 34 points in 63 games last season 44 points
in 64 games so he took another leap
so far this season i'm not going to say he's too good for the
AHL but it seems like he's certainly figured it out he's
a point per game player slightly above
a point per game player so he earns a call up
and obviously the Blues are dealing with some
injuries as well they could use some more depth scoring
as we've uh you know talked about as well
so Mark what do you make of the call what do you make
of the player talked about him before like
great upside there but finally gets what could
be a pretty big opportunity for himself in the NHL
i mean with the Blues of course a team
that's dealing with quite a few injuries again when
you're looking at the forwards looking
at the defense all started with Logan Mayhew but
looking at Kaz Pimacki what he brings
to this lineup isn't exactly what you want another player
that's looking and hungry to stay
into this lineup i mean looking again in the AHL a guy that's a
point per game player pretty much every well pushing towards
a point per game player to this
point of the season seven points in the six games it's
a young guy he's got a taste of the NHL and
again this falls back onto what we've
been preaching all offseason into this year this is the team that
yes might have not had the best start
but they're one of the deepest if not deepest teams around the
NHL when you're looking at every single position
of a fact of you have defensemen that can make
the push Adam Jurczyk joined this team after
the injury to Logan Mayhew you still have young guys
in the AHL Otto Stenberg still down there Kaskimaki coming up
this is a team that truly has
talent oozing at every single position maybe
not goaltending that's ready to take over a starting
spot because of course Joe Hofer
and Jordan Binnington are still here but this is a young
guy making it and again a young guy fighting
to get another contract to make a push to get into
the NHL as a full-time guy you love to see
and when looking at Springfield Steve Ott has done
an incredible job on what he's built down there
from a culture from young guys making the push
and making it a seamless transition to jump
from the AHL to the NHL we've seen Theo Lindstein
praise Ott just last year and looking at the St. Louis Blues
and with Kaskimaki 22 as threats in
six games for the Thunderbirds this season leading
the team with five assists and seven points two
goals this is going to be a kid that again
is going to impress with the call-up and Darius I
don't know if you feel the same way
on this but I genuinely think the farther we get into the season
with all these young guys making the push
into the NHL making the push to stay on this team Jim
Montgomery is actually going to have quite
a hard decision to make with a lot of these guys
especially when you make it and you push
and hopefully make it into the playoffs a really
hard decision to make too because you don't want
to stunt any of their development right like last
year with Stenberg too but this is a guy through
the first couple games of this season like you
gotta give him a look right
so um i'm excited to see what he's gonna be able to do does he even
this is the other thing too does he even get
into the lineup is it just a thing where it's like
hey you're playing well we'll call you up
but you'll get to you know nhl pay you'll get some
experience you'll practice with us the reason why i don't think
that approach makes sense is because
he's playing so well you know he's always played well he's
a great AHL player but he's playing so
well to start this season why would you call a guy up
to just you know get an NHL you know pay out
for a little while and just practice
with the team right like i think they're planning to use him
probably in a pretty big way here to help this team
so uh because he's a guy that's feeling
himself and maybe he can get other guys kind
of rolling as well now where does he fit into the
lineup maybe a third line position right maybe
a fourth line position i mean i don't think it's a
tough scenario right now where i don't think you can break up
that first line you have to see it
through they have to continue
to build you absolutely cannot break up that second line
they've genuinely been playing very well for you
and really your only offensive output is coming
from that second line but um if you look
at where he could possibly fit in maybe it's on that third
line maybe you move Buchnevich around i mean
Neighbours has put up some points so far this
season it's interesting could he slot
in on the fourth line you can see Dylan Dubé's there um
you know penciled in there he's still out due to an injury
but it could be maybe a fourth line
position where it's like hey you know what run around
a little bit try to get us a goal here
right like just be that energy bug maybe
that's something that they want there on the fourth line
so that's going to be interesting to see how
that progresses with you know what Jim Montgomery's
planning to do but again i don't think it makes sense
to call this guy up to to sit like he has
NHL experience in the past he started
the season very strong he's being called up to play i think
they want him to play to bring that energy
to bring a lot of hockey is mental and just feel
right he's feeling good and when you're feeling
good mentally you're you're in a good spot about
your game so he has all those intangibles right now
and he's going to bring that to the table
and i think that's the biggest thing i mean looking
at the team of course you want to call
up your top performers give them the taste
of the NHL once again you want to reward the guys but
calling this guy up who's leading Springfield
and that's not saying Springfield can't produce
without him that's a very good young team that's going to make a push
and again Steve Ott has an
incredible system to work with them they're
the young guys making the push and all the players i
mean Adam Jurczyk at some point eventually probably has
to end up going back when you get Logan Mayhew
back maybe he impresses enough where you don't send him back
but again there's so much talent
down there and calling up Kasky
and Mackey to not get him into a game doesn't make the most sense
unless again you just want him to come up
be around the team see the NHL life once again you
have a schedule coming up again where you want
to ring off some wins I mean you've had a couple big
wins you had a huge statement game versus
the Senators you dropped two games in a row versus
the Wild and Predators now listen the Minnesota Wild we've seen
their percentages power play penalty
kill that felt like a game that was going to be tough
but you need to get right on the back track
maybe Kaskin Mackie gets in on one of the games versus
the Jets the Golden Knights the Hurricanes maybe
this all falls into a part of him getting
a full-time spot in this team Ben we want to know
your thoughts on everything to do around the Blues
of course with this roster there's a lot of players
bouncing in and out due to injuries Jim Montgomery has decisions
to make with that top line that of
course is trying to get back on the right track
that second line is one of the best in the NHL
we love to see that but what are you guys thoughts
on the lines what would you do with the deployment
going into next game do we see Joel Hofer start let us know all
your thoughts down in the comments
because we love reading through each
and every one of them i've been your host Mark with my
call co-host Darius take care of Blue Sands
and we'll see you in the next one
