If you can't make your own sweet fruit wine, is there a good tasting inexpensive alternative. We try 5 cheap wines from Aldi, and the most expensive one was $7. They were all good but we had a couple favorites
Hi this is John and Andrea at Happy Wife Bakers and today we're going to taste test some
very inexpensive wine from Aldi.
We like making our own wine but not everybody can make their own wine and occasionally we
need to buy wine for special occasions.
So we actually went and bought five different wines from Aldi and they are all sweet but
Aldi is actually getting awards for some of their wine including this Winking Owl brand.
So if you like wine but you don't want to make your own and you like sweeter wines and
you just don't want to pay a whole lot we're going to try these for you and let you know
which ones we like.
So let's drink some wine.
Okay where do you want to start?
Well let's just start right over here with the sweet red.
Okay so that's a Moiselle sweet red wine.
It's six dollars.
All the Moiselle was six dollars and this one is 10.5% alcohol.
It does not have a cork.
It does have a twist off.
It says mouth-watering flavors of black cherry and raspberry.
I have not started drinking I swear yet.
How's it smell?
You can smell the raspberries.
And we make a lot of raspberry wine so raspberry is a great flavor in wines.
Oh that's good.
It's not as sweet as you like it.
It's not as sweet but it does have...
It's sweet.
It's just not as sweet as you like it.
Yeah but it's very good.
It's not super sweet.
So it is, I would guess, sort of in the middle of the road to me.
This would be a good dinner wine.
I like that.
Yeah I think it would be good with some beef.
Good with beef.
So we are not professional wine tasters, wine connoisseurs, but we do make our own wine.
So we make it to our taste.
We know what good wine tastes like, at least sweet wines.
Alright let's go to the next one.
So this is a sweet rosé.
It was also $6 and it is also a moizelle.
I think it's moizelle.
Moizelle.
It's pretty French sounding.
Sweet rosé and 10%.
Also says mouthwatering.
Hints of juicy cherry and watermelon.
Which is kind of interesting because we have not figured out how to do watermelon in our
wine.
This is another twist off cap.
What does it mean, what does rosé mean?
Is that a color?
It's usually a lighter red.
Okay.
It doesn't have much of a fragrance.
No it doesn't.
Can you smell the watermelon?
No.
A little tart, a little more dry than the sweet red.
Showcases a refreshing sweetness from mouthwatering hints of juicy cherry and watermelon.
Relax with friends and enjoy it with quiche, pasta salad, fruit, or strawberry cobbler.
Well there you go.
I'll take that with strawberry cobbler, thank you.
It's pretty tasty.
It is, it is.
This would be a good summer drink.
Ah.
I think so.
A little lighter.
I like that.
Okay, what's next?
We're going to try the pink moscato.
Another moizelle.
I'm trying three moizelles in a row.
All of these again are $6.
Wow.
9% it is a pink moscato moizelle.
Wow.
Do you have any idea what a moscato is?
I don't have any idea what that means.
Do you?
I don't know.
I could make something up.
I'm pouring myself first.
You go right ahead, sweetheart.
What's coming after we shoot the video?
Egg collection.
Should be fun.
Oh.
And?
Maybe a nap.
There we go.
This one has nectarine and raspberry, according to it.
It is, it just says refreshing sweet wine.
So, I'm not exactly sure what a moscato is.
You don't know what a moscato is?
I'm sure there will be subtitling right across here that says what a moscato is.
That would be great, because I have no idea.
And, let's see.
Relax with friends and enjoy it with summer salads, fresh fruit, or favorite desserts.
Would you make me one of my favorite desserts?
I don't even know what that is.
No.
We've been married all this time and I still don't know what your favorite dessert is.
Oatmeal raisin cookies.
Oh.
Okay.
Well, I can't make them.
So, I'm no good at that.
Here we go.
Drink up.
I don't know why we make these videos for you people.
This has bubbles.
That's a moscato.
Bubbles?
Yeah, don't you have bubbles?
Can you feel the bubbles in your mouth?
A little bit.
So, it still has a little bit of carbonation?
Mm-hmm.
Very slight.
Okay.
I like it.
I like this.
This is heart.
I like moscatoes, I think, out of what we've bought in the past.
You can actually, you can taste that nectarine.
Oh, yeah.
Definitely the nectarine in it.
Most definitely.
This is really good.
I like this.
Of the three we've tasted so far, I probably like this one the best.
I'll rank order them when we get done.
Really?
And then we can rank order what you like.
Okay.
But yeah, it does have, it's not bubbly bubbly, but it does have little tiny bubbles.
The next one is a Winking Owl.
That is one of their award-winning brands.
So a lot of people like the Merlot.
I think they have a Cabernet Sauvignon.
Those are not our kinds of wines.
They're very dry wines, but a lot of people like them.
We actually chose a Sweet Red, which was the only sweet wine that Winking Owl actually had.
It was the cheapest of the wines, $4, and it's 8%.
Now this one looks like it has a cork.
So I'll be right back with a cork puller.
Yay!
The cheapest, the one that's $4, has a cork.
Isn't that hilarious?
Open it up, Hancock.
A cork puller.
You know who this is?
That's Linda Blair in The Exorcist.
Linda Blair from The Exorcist, very good.
Except I don't have to clean up the split pea soup.
Stick that down, and then pull that up, and there's your wine, uncorked.
Okay.
You want to sniff the cork?
I don't know what that does for me.
We are drinking all of these wines at room temperature, by the way.
I'll do yours.
Thank you, sweetheart.
It's very red.
Very red.
This says medium bodied.
It also says blackberry and raspberry flavors with a velvety soft finish.
You could eat this with barbecue beef ribs.
Velvety soft finish.
Eat it with barbecue beef ribs and spicy fajitas.
You're telling me too much.
Go make me some spicy fajitas, will you?
No, no.
This is very smooth.
A lot smoother than the other red was.
This is your sweetness right here.
It has no bite to it whatsoever.
It's just very, very smooth.
Very tasty.
I can see why the Winking Owl has some awards.
It is only 8%.
These others were 9% and 10%, 10.5%.
It's not the lowest alcohol by volume of all the ones we have here.
The lowest is the one we're going to drink next at 7%.
But it's definitely the smoothest.
Cheap wine, not necessarily a bad thing.
This would be a nice wine to end your day.
It's very smooth.
Not at all jarring when you drink it.
Have it with dinner or even after dinner.
After dinner wine or wine while we're watching chickens.
Yes, on the back porch.
This would be a good wine to drink while watching chickens.
And last one.
So this one is actually one I've already tried before
and I really, really like it.
So if you want to celebrate with some bubbly
and you don't really like champagne,
this is the one to try.
This is a Sweet Sparkling Moscato Rose.
Or Rosé.
Rosé, yes.
Whereas this is a Pink Moscato.
That is more sparkling.
So this still has a lot more bubbly to it
and it is capped on the top like a champagne.
This is the most expensive wine we have tried today
at $7 whole dollars.
$7?
There's a myth out there that the more you pay for wine,
the better it's going to be.
It's also the lowest percentage that we're getting today.
I don't subscribe to that theory.
I mean, if wine tastes good, then drink it.
It doesn't have to be expensive.
And your sweeter wines are always going to be cheaper
than your drier wines.
But this is one of those things where
you can get a really good wine at Aldi.
And there we go.
Muzzletop.
That was kind of scary at my ears just now.
So definitely bubbly.
Look at that.
That's a lot of bubbles in there.
This is made by Arosa.
It is an Italian wine.
It says it's a Spamante.
Sweet, light-bodied,
strawberries and bright cherries
lead into a sweet, well-balanced finish.
Best if served chilled.
Yes.
Let's give this a shot.
Cheers.
I've got a lot more now.
Oh, I can feel those bubbles in my mouth.
That dances on your tongue, doesn't it?
It does.
I like that.
I do like that.
It's all bubbly, so that means we're just going to have to drink it.
Yes.
Before it goes flat.
I know.
What are you doing the rest of the afternoon?
Napping, so I can't be drinking wine.
Well, drink it before your nap.
Enjoy this with friends.
That's maybe even a...
This is a celebration kind of wine.
But it could be an everyday wine.
Could be?
Yeah, I think so.
It's only $7.
The point of this video is that
you can buy some very inexpensive wines
that taste very good, if you like sweeter wines.
And of all the ones that are here,
I think, me personally,
I like this Pink Moscato.
Probably followed by this Winking Owl.
And then...
Yeah, then probably this.
What is that?
Sparkling Moscato.
And then maybe this Sweet Red,
followed by this Sweet Rosé.
That would be my...
No, then just all look out of order.
Okay.
Crazy.
I'm all crazy now.
That's my one to five.
What is yours?
You're going to go with this number one.
Of course I am.
I told you I would go with that number one.
I would go with this as my number two.
Winking Owl number two.
I like that.
I know it's only $4,
but it has...
It's so nice and smooth.
Number three?
Oh, probably this Pink Moscato
because I really like the bubbles.
And then I have to say this one...
Really?
That one last.
Sweet Red at the bottom.
It's got a little bit of...
Zing that I don't like in my wine.
Okay.
We sort of agree.
I mean, I could be convinced that this is at the top.
But I think for an everyday wine,
this $4 bottle of Winking Owl Sweet Red...
Is probably your winner.
Yeah.
You just have to have one of these.
So if you don't have one of these,
you probably shouldn't get the Winking Owl.
Or if you take a drywall nail
and you screw it into the top
and you take a pair of pliers and pull on it.
Ask me how I know.
