Sim Wilcher leads St. John's to NCAA Tournament contention
Oct 20, 2026
I saw him as freshman year, I didn't know who he was.
He just looked raw, raw talent, athletic.
The skill set was already there.
It was just kind of like blowing dust off.
I think what makes Sim so special is he's allowed me
to require a lot of him, demand a lot of him,
and not just in reference to how you play,
it's how do you conduct yourself.
My name is Simeon Wilcher, 19, and I play point guard.
My name is Sergio Wilcher. I'm Simeon Wilcher's father.
Sim got where he is today as an athlete just based on consistency.
He grew up in the sports family, so when he was young,
he probably took his first steps on the track.
That's what we did every day.
So if it was not you at practice,
we were at preparation before practice or preparation after practice.
I began playing basketball when I was seven years old,
really just following after my brother.
he started before me
so really just doing whatever he was doing we grew up
like every house that we every house
that we lived in before this we always
had a little section to like showcase the awards
and stuff now it's really
time for me to to really buckle down
and get ready to go enjoy my new journey my
name is Claudia Ruffin what I
do is specialize in supporting athletes to be
on and off platform performance
at the next level what I do is I like to mimic
whatever's happening in the athlete's life.
So for him, it's high school to college.
15 seconds on, 30 second walk.
Give it what you got, stay focused.
Curve treadmill is a lot.
It goes off how you run, so you could really get in,
get out of it what you put into it.
Really just putting out into the universe
what you want to receive.
Making the transition is all about, like you said,
ending something, losing or letting something go,
in order to get to your new beginning.
The NutriZone can be uncomfortable,
it's a new environment, new people, new philosophies,
a whole lot of newness.
But the most powerful thing, two pieces,
who you are and what you bring,
accelerates and gets bigger and better in the neutral zone,
if you're paying attention.
We got on the VertiMax, which he's very familiar with,
but I use the VertiMax from the standpoint of platform.
So you have your platform, your family platform.
Now you have a platform going to college.
How are you going to continue to demonstrate impact
to be successful
in college?
We always start with ball handling.
I think that as a basketball player,
you can always improve as a ball handler.
So we want to warm up with some drills
to get him acclimated, get his feet, get his hands moving
in synchronization before we actually put those things
to work.
So some of the things that we did today
was manipulating pace, manipulating his skills
in terms of being able to get his defender off balance
and using finishing moves with his body
to finish around the basket.
For me, personally, it's been, in the last year,
it's been trying to figure out how to involve myself
within playing, because that's like the point guard.
You try to make sure everything and everybody else is okay,
and everybody else is doing their thing,
but sometimes you can get away from imposing yourself,
so that's been one of my challenges,
but I felt like I've gotten really, really, really better
with doing that.
It's interesting because we can make comparisons,
but he's his own person.
He brings a unique flair to the game
from his athletic ability,
but he also is able to do everything
in terms of being a three-level scorer.
One of the things that I really find joy with him,
which I think is his best attribute, is his vision.
He really is able to set up his teammates
and he finds real joy in his teammates' success in scoring.
The preparation is serious and it's intentional.
It's not just about, you know,
lifting weights and taking shots.
It's about preparing yourself mentally
to deal with what comes along
with that and especially in this current society
with you know social media
and kids have their own platforms going into these
places whereas you know that used
to be the springboard for your platform crazy
thing about the transfer portal
is I feel like it changed the game forever
it's an opportunity for a lot of people
who weren't able to get their names out
there coming out of high school
with the NIL space I feel like it's good that
People are like kids are receiving like NIL money
because money is made off their name when when we're out there
So it's cool that they're finally getting
a chance to do it. The money's gonna come
It's not really a thing that's on my mind sure
I'm really just want to go somewhere
where I'm loved and where I could play
So really what makes me special is a lot
of kids that can play basketball really well
You know, but are there a lot of kids that that truly care about it
is willing to be inclusive. No days off
it means every day you're doing something that doing something that's
gonna improve you in any way
and it's really just making sure every day day in
a day out you're doing something
that is improving you in some way thank you guys
