Sergei Prokofiev's ballet "Cinderella" on the new stage of the Mariinsky Theatre

There are countless “Cinderella” staged to Prokofiev's music – dancers on pointe, barefoot, in tutus, and in tights. A palace ball doesn't necessarily require diamonds sparkling on lush gowns, or a beautiful fairy with a magic wand performing miracles – in the Mariinsky Theatre production the transformations are performed by a busy old beggar woman with a net of oranges and a retinue of cocky punks, while the Prince carries the coveted slipper in a backpack. This ironic and humorous ballet, even twenty years after its premiere, remains one of the finest examples of the Mariinsky Theatre's contemporary repertoire.
