Responding to a seeker’s question about losing his brother, Sadhguru speaks about the reality of death, the nature of grief, and why mortality should awaken human beings to the briefness of life and the nature of one’s existence.

Save Soil Movement
Launched by Sadhguru, Save Soil is the world's largest people's movement, reaching 3.91 billion people to address impending soil extinction by supporting governments to create policies for soil revitalization.
Sadhguru addresses a grieving individual who lost their brother, shifting the conversation from the pain of loss to the reality of existence. He emphasizes that death is an inevitable part of life and urges the listener to use this moment of grief as a catalyst for spiritual awakening and a more fulfilling life.
I lost my brother recently, he was an Isha meditator and I know that you resided in his heart and Devi.
Sadhguru, has he made it to you?
When death happens, it's happening every day to somebody.
When it happens to somebody who's near to us,
if those dear to you died only once or twice in your life, you're living a very poor life.
For me, every day somebody that's very dear to me dies.
If you have embraced a large number of people, lot of people will die.
I'm not trying to belittle the death of a dear one.
Why losing someone who's dear to us is significant is,
because essentially a human being as you know him, is a collage of things.
In this there are people, if one person falls off, it leaves a hole in our life.
Hard to fill that hole.
No matter what you do, that hole remains in the collage.
So we are always surprised by death.
It's... I want you to understand this in the right context.
If somebody gets pregnant, they're surprised.
Somebody dies, they're surprised.
This is the basis of our existence.
Hello, somebody got pregnant, so we are here.
And somebody died and made way... made space for us on this planet, so we are here.
It's the most obvious thing, but both people are surprised.
This is the strangeness of human mind.
Well, Sadhguru, what I need is not a philosophy, I want to know where my brother is.
I understand the emotion.
I respect the emotion.
But I don't want you to waste that possibility.
When someone dear to us passes, it's for us to realize that this is the nature of life.
However painful it seems to be, if you don't even realize when life knocks you so close to you,
when will you realize?
Every day, people are dying.
In Coimbatore city, on a daily basis, twenty-one to twenty-four cremations happen.
Out of this, at least four to five are accidental deaths.
So most probably they're young people.
In Coimbatore city, 1.5 million population.
Across the world, it's happening in a very large number.
But we are going about as if nothing happened.
But somebody that I know dearly gets knocked down today.
Even then if I don't wake up, not good.
You've heard of Gautama's story.
He saw just one old person, one sick person, one dead body, and he went in search of truth.
Leaving his kingdom, leaving his young wife, leaving his a year-and-a-half old child,
he went in search of truth because he just saw one dead body.
How many should fall for you?
How insensitive are we?
So, Sadhguru, this is my brother, I understand, especially because it's somebody dear to you.
Isn't it the best moment to wake up and understand what is the nature of our existence?
Somebody died there, you think that's a piece of wood, unfortunately.
No, that is as much life as you.
Hello?
Yes or no?
Whoever it is, today's twenty-four score in Coimbatore city,
all those twenty-four, as much life as you and me or no?
But somebody that you have known dearly just fell here today.
Even then, if you don't wake up, what to do?
You must wake up.
And grief is not the way, awareness is the way.
Sleeping through it, because grief will make you sleep.
It's time to wake up.
When life which is on here and suddenly poof,
you must wake up because that is the nature of your existence too, isn't it?
Hello?
That is the nature of your existence too.
I...
I say, I just have a few years left.
A whole lot of people sending queries,
is Sadhguru's health okay?
Is something wrong with his health?
Nothing has to be wrong with your health today, you can die tomorrow.
Hello?
Yes or no?
I live my life like this is my last day.
Not... not making sure one moment doesn't pass without doing what I have to do
and how I should be.
And how do you know this is not your last day?
How do you know?
Guarantee card anybody?
Guarantee card you have?
We are not wishing to die today.
That's a different matter.
We wish to live a full life.
But is there a guarantee?
So I'm not trying to philosophize over your pain.
I'm just telling you this is not philosophy.
This is reality.
This is the reality of our existence.
Not just your brother,
you, me, everyone.
This is the reality of our existence.
This is why life is so precious.
When we are here,
it is absolutely precious.
You shouldn't waste one moment in unnecessary things,
things that don't matter to you,
things that are not valuable,
things that are not positive to this life,
shouldn't happen for one moment.
Somebody in the ashram came and told me,
I said, are you okay?
I wanted to put this person into samsara and I said,
are you all right looking at the face?
She says, I have lot of negative emotions.
My roommate,
I have to breathe the same air, you know.
My roommate,
I looked at her and what, you want to kill her?
No, I don't want to kill her,
but I would like to bang her head on the locker.
I said, very good emotion.
Next time you feel like banging somebody's head,
you bang mine.
Let me see.
I want you to bang mine.
Because living in the ashram,
you have come here,
giving up your profession,
moving away from your family,
wanting to do things
and now you want to bang somebody's head on the locker.
You would have done that somewhere.
No, this is not one strange being.
There are lots of them.
This is the unfortunate reality of life
that we do not know the value of life till it's gone.
This is the tragedy of being human
that we do not know the value of our existence till it is gone.
If your brother is gone,
you must live double the life.
Hmm?
Hello?
You must fulfill more.
Fulfilling does not mean you have to do this, that, that.
No.
This life should become fulfillment.
Being full is not fulfillment, you know?
Because I'm talking of yesterday's festival,
feast rather.
Lot of people refer to Ganesha's feast, not festival.
This is a fantastic civilization where we create our own god
and then when it is time, you dissolve him.
When Ganapati himself can be dissolved,
you think this won't be?
Hello?
Are you that foolish that you think this is forever?
And you're asking me if my health is okay because I said I have just a few years left.
Even you only have few years left.
You think you have a million years left.
If you have something significant to do, there are very few years left.
If you have nothing to do, you're scratching yourself,
then it looks like you have lot of years left.
So, Ganapati was full but not fulfilled.
This is your condition too.
Hello?
This is your condition too.
Fulfillment happens not because you build a body like that
or you gather this much of knowledge or wealth or money or something else.
Whatever you gather, it may make you feel full but fulfillment shall never happen.
For fulfillment, there is another way.
That's what you're supposed to explore here.
So, we deeply respect a departed life
and where is he?
What is he doing?
Arey, did you inquire that when he was alive?
Maybe you did.
I'm not saying you did not, but most people don't.
Hello?
Isn't it?
When they're alive, you don't ask, where are you?
How are you doing?
Something, problem.
But after one is gone, you want to know where they are.
You don't worry.
If he genuinely had, as you say, Sadhguru in his heart, you don't worry about him.
But you must think of your life.
Now that a sibling is lost midway through life, not a full life,
you have a responsibility to make sure this life is a fulfilling life, not a full thing.
Fulfilling.
What is that?
I will not tell you, you must find out.
