Facts and information about the Northern Cardinal.
Welcome to MooMooMath and Science and Cardinals.
Cardinals are small songbirds with a distinctive crest on their heads and a short, thick bill.
And of course, the males are known for their brilliant red color, which is how they got
their name when they reminded earlier settlers of the red robes worn by Catholic Cardinals.
The female looks a little different than the males with a beautiful reddish-brown coloration.
But don't let their subtle appearance fool you.
They're just as fascinating as their male counterparts.
Cardinals are primarily seed eaters, but they also enjoy berries, fruits, and insects.
And here's a fun fact.
They're one of the few birds that can eat poison ivy berries without any ill effects.
These adaptable birds can be found throughout eastern and central North America, from southern
Canada down to Mexico.
They're non-migratory, which means that they stick around all year, adding a little bit
of color to even the drierest day.
Now let's listen to their call.
Here it is.
Notice it has a rich, melodic call, and the males use their songs to attract mates and
defend their territory.
Let's listen to it one more time.
So there you go.
The Cardinal.
Thanks for watching, and remember, kindness multiplies kindness, and kind to someone today.
