New Mexico may look ancient, dry, and motionless — but beneath the desert is one of the most geologically complex landscapes in the United States.

In this video, we uncover 20 incredible discoveries hidden across New Mexico, from the 14,000-foot-deep Rio Grande Rift beneath Albuquerque and the mysterious Socorro Magma Body to the enormous Valles Caldera, more than 100 volcanic vents, and lava fields that are surprisingly young in geological terms.

Scientists have also discovered 21,000–23,000-year-old human footprints at White Sands, more than 140 miles of explored cave passages beneath the desert, recovering groundwater beneath Albuquerque, and evidence showing that New Mexico’s crust has been stretched and reshaped for millions of years.

What looks like an empty desert is actually hiding buried basins, dormant volcanoes, ancient lakes, massive cave systems, magma, faults, and evidence of human history far older than scientists once expected.
