NECA Awards: Vivek Sharma on Philanthropy: Start Early, Build the Mindset, and Let Resources Follow

BOSTON—For Vivek Sharma, philanthropy is more than giving away wealth. It is about cultivating a mindset of sharing, making a meaningful difference, and creating opportunities that transform lives for generations.
The Boston-based entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist will be honored as the 2026 Philanthropist of the Year at the New England Choice Awards gala on November 14.
In this exclusive interview with INDIA New England News, Sharma shares his philosophy of giving and offers advice to the next generation of philanthropists: Start early, develop the mindset to help others, and focus on the impact you want to create. Once the commitment to help is there, resources and opportunities can follow.
Through the Vivek and Vandana Sharma Family Foundation, Sharma supports initiatives in education, healthcare, community development, environmental sustainability, sports, and arts and culture, with a strong focus on creating lasting social impact in India.
The foundation supports several thousand young girls in Uttarakhand through education, healthcare, and livelihood programs. Sharma has also supported a center at Northeastern University promoting the study and understanding of India and serves as a founder and trustee of Rishihood University, which emphasizes values-based education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Its initiatives also include an elder care center in India offering senior living and integrated medical support, as well as a residential care and development center for boys, including orphans and children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
As a board member of Olympic Gold Quest, Sharma helps advance support for India's Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The foundation also supports tree plantation initiatives and organizations dedicated to preserving Indian art, music, culture, and heritage.
Beyond philanthropy, Sharma brings more than three decades of global business experience, having served as a private equity partner, CEO, and executive chairman of several companies. He was recognized among the Top 50 Finance Professionals in the United States and later received a Best CEO in Pharma Services award.
His message to aspiring philanthropists is simple: You don't need to wait until you are wealthy to start making a difference. Giving can begin with a commitment to a cause, volunteering time, supporting an initiative, or bringing people together to create change.
