During this Part-1 of our walking tour video, you will discover the rich history and architectural marvels of this cultural gem as we explore its stunning Beaux-Arts and Art Deco design, some rare manuscripts, historic collections, and hidden treasures!
Designed by New York architect Bertram Goodhue, the original Central Library was built during the mid-1920s. His two final projects, the Nebraska State Capitol and our Los Angeles Central Library are regarded by architectural historians as the most innovative work of his career.
The Central Library is an early example of Art Deco, the transitional modernist style popular from the mid 1920s through the 1930s. Its monumental simplicity serves as a backdrop for an ambitious program of decorative sculpture. When the library was renovated during the late 1980s and early 1990s, most of the collection was moved to the new Tom Bradley Wing.
