What kind of girl do you like
I prefer girls with long hair
I prefer the girl with big eyebrows
In our last lesson we asked people "What kind of boys do you like "
What type of boys do you like
In this lesson we are continuing with that theme and asking what type of girls do you like
We'll learn more about the Chinese way of describing someone's appearance especially female characteristics
Let's start by listening to how our host Tongtong phrases the question
What type of girls do you like
You like what kind of girls
The question here is phrased exactly the same way as the question in the
previous lesson except of course the word "boy" was replaced by the word "girl "
Girl is the same as girl
Here you can also say "What kind of girl do you like "
Let's see what kinds of girls the first guest likes
What kind of girl do you like
I like girls with big eyes preferably with a round face and a high nose
The word that our guest uses for girl instead of "nǚ háizi" is "nǚ shēng "
"Nǚ shēng" is really just another way to say girl or young woman
It originally meant school girl with the "sheng" being short for "xuesheng " student
But now it's used in much the same way as the generic "nühái zi "
Repeat after me
Girl
Sometimes you also hear people use "nansheng" for boys or guys
Our guest says he likes "dajing de nüsheng " which means you guessed it girls with big eyes
Alright
let 's
learn the
names of parts
of the face
Repeat
after me
Eyes Eyes nose
Eyes nose face
One more time
One last time
Eyes nose face
Now I'm going to say
the name at
a new point
Nose
FaceEyes
Very good
Alright so big-eyed girls is big-eyed girls
I like girls with big eyes
Then he goes on to say that she should preferably have a oval face and a high nose
We've learned before that "zui hao" means the best as in "zui hao peng you " best friend
Here we learned that it can also mean ideally or preferably
For example say you're looking for a tour guide in China Even though you can 't
speak Chinese yourself you prefer someone who can speak English as well
So when talking about your requirement you can say "best to speak English " ideally can speak English
Now back to our interview
What characteristics does the guest say that his type should ideally have
He mentions two things "guazi face" and "high nose "
"Guazi" means melon seeds like watermelon seeds and pumpkin seeds
Because a pumpkin is considered a type of melon which could be melon or squash
Face means face
Remember eyes nose face
So a "gua zi lian" is a face that is shaped like a melon seed although with a slightly pointed chin
You might also think of it as heart-shaped in English but more on the narrow side
This is considered to be the face shape of a classic beauty in China
The Chinese celebrity that comes to mind when you think of "guazi lian" is Fan Bingbing
Fan Bingbing is one of the most famous actresses in China
Face shape is not something we think about too much in Western culture
But in China people are much more aware of the shape of their own face as well as the
shape of other people's faces And use the face shape as a major identifying feature
Another face shape considered beautiful for women which also has a very descriptive word for it
It's "e-dan-lian " which literally means goose egg face
Goose is goose egg is egg and face is face
If you can imagine a goose egg you can get an idea of the shape of the face this word describes
It's also oval-shaped but slightly rounder than the guazi face and without the slightly pointed chin
It might seem strange to you to describe someone by the shape of their face but think
about it In the West you describe people by their hair color eye color and skin color
Well in China where most people have nearly the same eye hair and skin color
we have to use more detailed characteristics to describe someone's appearance
Face shape is one thing you may not have given much thought to before
Another is the bridge of your nose
That is the second thing our guest mentions as an ideal characteristic for the type of girls he likes
High nose literally tall nose
Having a flat nose is not a desirable characteristic in China
Which is unfortunate since this is the dominant type of nose for Chinese people
Those who are blessed with a more prominent nose are generally considered more attractive
Now let's listen once more to our first guest's answer
Got it Let's continue
Here's how the second guest answers Tongtong's question
I like
people with good skin Skin means skin Someone
with good skin is someone without blemishes or marks
The phrase "I like good skin" is missing an object
We have to go all the way to the end of the sentence to find the object which is "girl "
So if the guest wanted to simply say I like girls with good skin without
elaborating further then he would have
said "I like girls with good skin "
But instead he wanted to say I like girls with
good skin and who are pale or have a fair complexion
He said this: "I like girls with good skin and who are very fair-skinned "
In Chinese to say that someone is pale or fair
We usually say they look white which is "long very white " The opposite
of this to say someone is really dark or really tan is "long very black "
In China as well as most of East Asia pale
skin is considered much more attractive
than tanned skin For most women in particular the sun is their worst enemy
They will go to great lengths to avoid sun exposure They put on sunscreen wear long
sleeves and hats carry parasols and even
wear sun shades that cover their entire face
And then they still use whitening cream
Every time I go home my mother tells me that I'm too dark
But I tell her that where I live in the
States southern California having a tan is a
good thing A Caucasian friend of mine who lives in China has complained to me before
That it's difficult for her to find face cream that is not whitening
As a white woman she does not want to be any paler than she already is
She always has a good laugh when she goes to the beach in
China to sunbathe and people look at her like she is crazy
Her Chinese friends often tell her
"Your skin is so white " which may
seem like an insult to her but it's actually a compliment in Chinese
Anyway getting back to our lesson our second guest's full answer
is "I like girls with good skin and who are very fair-skinned "
He uses the word "and" to connect his
two thoughts "And" is another word
that can mean and You have already learned the word "and" to mean and
But the correct use of 和 is very limited compared to the English word and
You can use the English word and to connect almost anything
But and can only be used to connect two nouns or pronouns
Think of and as the and that you use in the phrases this and that
So you can say "I have
a little brother and a
little sister " Or "I can
speak English and Chinese "
Think of the word "而且" as meaning furthermore or and what's more
Here's an example for you
The food here is delicious and the environment is good
The food here is delicious and the environment is also good
Now let's watch our second guest's answer one more time
and then move on to the next person
I like girls with good skin and who are very fair-skinned
What kind of girl do you like
I prefer girls with long hair
The guest says he prefers
Back in lesson 11 we learned that biāojǐ means to compare or
relatively and biāojǐhǎo means pretty good or relatively good
Because the weather was better on the eleventh it was suitable for going out to travel
Then in lesson 13 we came across the phrase 比較累
meaning pretty tiring or relatively tiring
Is the work quite tiring not wanting to go out
Here we see that "比較" can also be followed by "喜歡"
"比較喜歡" can be thought of as meaning prefer
So this guest says he prefers long hair
We know that long means long hair means hair
We learned before that the word
"head" means head so the word
"hair" refers to the hair on your head As a quick side note
The word for hair that is on your arm
or your leg is "hair " as in Chairman Mao
Mao is also the word that means fur on animals Anyway our guest
says he prefers girls with long
hair I prefer girls with long hair
What should he say if he prefers girls with short hair
I prefer girls with short hair Good Let's
look at the next one
Let's look at the next one
What kind of girl do you like
A tall and thin girl
This guest's response is very similar to one from our last lesson
Let's go back and take a look at that one again
What kind of boy do you like
I like tall and handsome ones
That guest said she likes guys
who are tall and handsome In
this lesson the "again and again" structure comes up again
This time the guest says he likes tall and slim girls
girls who are both tall and skinny
I guess he's looking for a model a model
Anyway "model" is one of the few Chinese words
that was taken from English
and therefore actually sounds like the English equivalent Let'
s say the sentence Models are both tall and thin
The model is tall and thin
Very good
Ok now for our last guest
Let's see what he likes
What kind of girl do you like
I prefer girls with big eyes
Our last guest says "I prefer big-eyed beauties "
"Big-eyed beauties" is an easy phrase for you to learn
because you already know each of the four words
Big as in big eye as in eyes
Beautiful as in beautiful
Girl as in girl
A beautiful girl with big eyes The "big-eyed girl" look is what many
girls try to capture when they take
photos of themselves with their phones
You have probably seen them before They
hold their phone camera at a certain angle
in order to try to make their eyes look
bigger Almost like a cartoon character
Smaller more typical Asian-style eyes are
unfortunately not what is considered beautiful to many people in China So more and more
people are even getting plastic surgery
To try to get the "big-eyed beauty" look Anyway
if you know a Chinese woman who is considering
getting plastic surgery maybe you can encourage
her to think that natural
beauty is the real beauty
Natural is beautiful Also I want to
talk about the word "beautiful woman"
here "Beautiful woman" is a word that's really popular in China right now
Even though it refers to a beauty or a beautiful girl it can be
used to describe or refer to frankly
any female good-looking or not
From around 16 years old to maybe 40 or so
Some people end up saying "Hey beautiful"
to call someone if they don't know her name
I think this is because calling someone "
miss" sometimes feels a little too formal
and calling someone "beauty" seems more
familiar or casual In other situations
If a woman is too old to be called Miss but too young to be
called Mrs some people may end
up just calling her Beauty instead
To avoid offending her
The word "meinv" is often paired together
with the word "shuaige" that we learned in the last lesson
"Shuai ge" is the male equivalent of the word "mei nu "
Bars and clubs often claim that their establishment
is where all the "shuai ge" and "mei nu" hang out
It's like saying the beautiful people
or the young and glamorous crowd Alright
that's all for this lesson Goodbye to all
you handsome guys and beauties out there
See you next time
Well my question for you
now is: What kind of girls
or guys do you like What 's
