Hello, welcome back. You should know how to say I can speak a little Chinese by now.
That would be wǒ huì shuō yì diǎr zhōng wén. Now let's learn how to say the English
language. It's yīng wén, yīng wén. Well, English people speak English. So you need
to take yīng guó, England, drop guó, the country, and add wén, the language. Then
you'll get yīng wén, the English language. Usually if a country name contains the component
guó, country, you need to drop guó, country, and add wén, language. And then you'll get
the Chinese word for the language of that country. For example, France is fǎ guó.
Now drop guó, and add wén, and you'll get the word for the French language, which is
fǎ wén. Germany is called dé guó, because in German, Germany is called Deutschland,
which took the d-e sound and made Germany dé guó. Now to form the word, the German
language, you need to drop guó in dé guó, and add wén. Then you'll get the word for
the German language, dé wén. However, please note that lots of country names don't have
the word guó in them. For example, Italy in Chinese is yì dà lì. It doesn't have
the word component guó, country in it. Canada is jiā ná dà. Australia is ào dà lì yà.
Neither Canada nor Australia contains the word component guó, country. For countries
whose names don't contain the component guó, you can just add the component wén, and you'll
get the language name. For example, the Italian language is yì dà lì wén. Well of course,
Australians and Canadians speak English, so they speak yīng wén. Please don't call the
English language měi wén. The English language is yīng wén. After all, měi guó rén, Americans
shuō, speak, yīng wén, English. Americans speak English, not American. Now say, I can
speak English. Wǒ huì shuō yīng wén. Now let's learn the word and so that you can say,
I can speak English and a little Chinese. This is how you say and in this sentence.
hé, hé. The pinyin spelling of hé is h-e, second tone. The English letter e is pronounced
as e, and it sort of sounds like u-h in English. Now repeat after me, hé, hé. Hé can mean
both the word with and the word and. Now say English and Chinese. Yīng wén hé zhēng
wén. Now say, I can speak. Wǒ huì shuō. Wǒ huì shuō. Now let's put them together
and say, I can speak English and Chinese. Wǒ huì shuō. Yīng wén hé zhēng wén.
Ok, let's add the phrase a little, yì diǎn'er, and say, I can speak English and a little
Chinese. Wǒ huì shuō. Yīng wén hé yì diǎn'er. Zhēng wén. Again, Wǒ huì shuō.
Yīng wén hé yì diǎn'er. Zhēng wén. Here's something I need to emphasize here. The word
hé means and, but you cannot use the Chinese word hé the same way as you use the English
word and. Please don't assume the Chinese word hé and the English word and function
the same way grammatically in both languages. They don't. The Chinese word hé can only
connect words or phrases. It cannot connect sentences. In English you can say, I'm Zhang
and I'm American. Here you cannot translate the word and to hé because hé cannot connect
two sentences. As a matter of fact, we use the word and a lot less in Chinese than it
is used in English. In Chinese, we simply say, I'm Zhang, period. I'm American, period.
We don't need any connection word in between the sentences. Great. For now, just remember
this hé means and or with and it cannot connect sentences. Ok, now let's say this again. I
can speak English and a little Chinese. Wǒ huì shuō. Yīng wén hé yì diǎn'er. Zhēng
wén. Great. In our next lesson, we are going to learn how to turn all these statements
into yes or no questions. Alright, zài jiàn.
