Learn English while you spend a day at the beach with me. 🌊 In this slow English listening video, I take you with me from getting ready and packing my beach bag to swimming, walking along the shore, and watching the sunset, all completely in English. You don't need to study. Just watch, listen, and understand through context.
Don't worry about understanding every word. Look at what I'm doing, listen to the words I'm using, and let the situation help you understand. This is how natural listening practice works.

💬 Tell me in the comments: how much did you understand? 50%? 70%? 90%? And where should we spend our next day together: a cafe, a market, a grocery store, or a new city?
Today, you're not going to study English with me.
You're going to spend the day at the beach with me, completely in English.
I'm going to take you with me while I pack my things, while I walk around, while I go
to the beach, and hopefully, while we watch the sun set.
And the entire time, we're going to be speaking English.
My beach bag, because of something else, looks really calm.
We should have.
I'm going to get in the water.
Don't worry about understanding every single word.
And try to understand me through context, okay?
Let's get ready.
We're in La Paz, by the way.
It's in Baja California Sur, in the north of Mexico.
Okay, first, let me show you what I have in my bag, my beach bag.
It's not really a beach bag.
It's more of just a normal backpack, but it's my beach bag for today.
So let's see what I have inside.
But first, what do you pack for the beach?
What do you put inside your beach bag?
So let's see what I have.
So first of all, I have my camera, the one I'm recording with right now, because I was
recording for today.
Then I have some sunglasses.
These are new sunglasses, my new favorite sunglasses, because they're pink.
And you guys know I've been loving the color pink lately.
Do you like these?
Tell me in the comments.
Then we have my microphone.
This is the microphone.
I use to record my videos.
It's really good.
I have a towel, a beach towel.
Next we have my shirt.
Let me show you guys.
A shirt I brought just kind of to wear after I swim, because it's a little bit uncomfortable
to wear a shirt like this after swimming, because it's so tight.
Loose shirts are really nice for after swimming, especially when you're all sticky from the
salt water in the ocean.
Then what else?
Then we have in the front pockets, so these are the front pockets, my wallet, and my headphones.
I have a hat to protect my skin from the sun rays, and I have sunscreen on my face, so
I didn't bring my sunscreen with me, even though I probably should have.
Next time I will bring my sunscreen.
I'll learn from my mistake.
So remember, should have, we use when we didn't do something, but we think that we should
have.
We think that next time we will.
We should have.
We use it when we didn't do something.
We didn't do it.
Now, would have is a little different.
If I say, I would have brought my sunscreen, but I didn't because I already put it on.
Would have means I intentionally didn't because of something else.
I would have brought my sunscreen, but I didn't because I didn't need it.
It wasn't necessary.
I would have if I needed to, but I didn't.
If I hadn't put on sunscreen and I forgot to pack sunscreen, then I would have gotten
sunburned.
If your skin turns red after being in the sun for a long time, then that's called sunburn.
That's getting sun burnt.
Have you ever gotten sunburned?
Maybe on your shoulders, your chest, maybe your forehead got sunburned.
Tell me in the comments.
I have my swimsuit on underneath so that I can just take off my shirt and get in the
ocean.
I also am wearing flip flops.
These are called sandals or flip flops.
Normally, you wear these at the beach, flip flops.
I'll put on my sunglasses, put on my hat, and let's go head to the beach.
Now we're walking to the beach.
Let me show you guys the view.
Just then, I was at the kiosk.
That's the kiosk over there.
Here is the pier.
Now we're walking to the beach.
I want to sit on the sand.
While we're on the sand, I'll tell you guys a little more about this beach that I'm on.
Look at that.
We made it.
There aren't very many people here today.
The beach is very empty.
The water looks really calm, like the waves, they're super calm.
The sky is a little bit cloudy.
It's not super clear at the moment, but it still keeps it fresh.
It's not too insanely hot.
It's not just warm, I would say it's hot.
To be hot is almost to be scorching.
If I say it's scorching hot, that means it's really hot, not just warm.
Right now, it's not scorching hot because the sun isn't super intense, but it is hot.
Don't get me wrong, it's very hot.
So actually, before I describe everything to you, before I tell you what this is, what
that is, I want you to tell me what you see.
So what can you see?
You don't need to know tons of English vocabulary to tell me, or any complicated words.
You could say the water is blue, the beach is quiet, or that the sun is shining.
Maybe that there are people swimming.
Simple English is still English.
Okay, here's how I would describe it.
The water is calm.
The waves are small.
The sky is cloudy, and the sand feels rough.
There's a nice breeze coming from the ocean.
Now something I really want you to practice in English is describing your surroundings.
You can do this anywhere.
When you're walking, the street is busy.
When you're having a coffee, this brew is hot.
When you're at home, I need to clean my kitchen.
And you don't need an English-speaking person next to you to start using it.
Okay, now I think I'm going to get in the water.
Notice how I didn't say, I'm going to enter the ocean.
I just said, I'm going to get in now.
Okay, we've been practicing a lot of English, but now I just want to talk to you.
Because this is something I want you to start doing more when you're practicing English.
Stop treating English like a school subject that you study for and memorize.
English isn't just grammar.
It isn't a test.
It isn't something you need to finish learning before starting to use it.
It's a language.
It's something you can experience life through.
I think about what we did today.
We walked.
We went swimming.
We looked at the ocean.
We talked.
And you experienced all of that in English.
And maybe there were words that you didn't understand completely, but that's okay.
You don't need to understand every word to have a conversation, a meaningful conversation.
I think sometimes English learners wait for the moment when they're ready to speak.
When my grammar gets better, then I'll be ready.
When I know more vocabulary.
When my pronunciation improves, then I'll speak.
But speaking is part of how those things improve, not when.
You don't become confident and then start speaking.
You become confident because you started speaking.
And that's exactly what we do in my English community.
The Slow English Community.
And we're opening in October, at the beginning of October.
So be sure to join the waitlist to start speaking English with other English learners from around the world.
No judgment, no pressure to speak.
Now imagine what you would do if you weren't afraid of making mistakes.
Would you travel?
Would you make new friends?
Would you apply for a new job?
Think about your answer.
Now you have to talk.
I'm going to ask you five questions and you have to answer out loud, not in your head.
Okay, ready?
What is the weather like where you are right now?
Pause.
Number two, do you prefer the beach or the mountains?
Pause.
Number three, what's something you always bring to the beach?
Pause.
Number four, when was the last time you went swimming?
Pause.
And number five, if you could travel to anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Pause.
Oh, and why?
Tell me.
Pause.
And if answering those questions felt difficult, that means that you actually practiced.
Congratulations.
I'm proud of you.
I'm proud that you're not giving up on your dreams.
Whether that's English or whether that's learning English for something else, you're still pursuing your dreams.
You're not letting them be forgotten.
Now, before we leave, let's do one last thing.
I'm going to say a sentence and you'll listen, then repeat.
Ready?
I spent the day at the beach.
The water was crystal clear.
I walked barefoot along the shore.
The sand was scorching hot.
I watched the sun set over the ocean.
I don't need perfect English to start speaking.
A little faster.
I don't need perfect English to start speaking.
You don't.
How much of this video did you understand?
And also tell me, where should we spend our next day together?
Maybe at the coffee shop.
Maybe at a restaurant.
I think we should make this a series.
What do you think?
If you enjoyed this video, I'm sure you'll enjoy the next one I have for you soon.
I'll see you guys next time.
Remember, never stop learning.
Bye!
