Roald Amundsen was born in 1872 in Borge, Østfold.
He was a polar explorer who was on many expeditions,
including the Belgian expedition,
the Northwest Passage,
and the Nordpol expedition.
But Amundsen is best known for his trip to South Pole.
In 1910, Amundsen began his journey to the south to reach South Pole.
To do this, he borrowed the boat from another well-known Norwegian explorer,
Frithjof Nansen.
To guarantee success, Amundsen used this year's research.
He decided to use both ski and dog sledding.
But he had a competitor in the race to South Pole,
the British explorer Sir Robert Scott.
Unlike Amundsen, Scott used modern motor skis,
which were unsuitable for polar skiing.
He built his own camp and called it Framheim.
On October 19, 1911, Amundsen and a crew of four began their journey to South Pole.
On December 14, 1912, Amundsen was the first to reach South Pole.
Scott died on his journey, Sir Robert.
After the South Pole expedition in 1926,
Amundsen reached North Pole in the Norwegian airship.
On 18-29-1928, the plane to Amundsen disappeared on its way to North Pole.
He wanted to save another explorer, Umberto Nobile.
No trace was ever found.
