Cast and crew members share their personal experiences and memories from the production of a television series. They discuss the emotional journey of filming, from the initial nerves of the first read-through and the challenges of location shooting to the development of a tight-knit, family-like bond among the team.
Dangerous part of the job. You need to be fearless
How are you chosen for this?
It's only one question
Are you afraid?
I was raised fearless and i'll do this better than he's ever done it before
Then go and get it john stewart
My first memory of that day when when I just sort of think of it is
Before I shot my first scene, uh, which was only me walking by the way
um
It was just me walking down a gravel path
I just I just kindly asked the
The crew to gather around
And I just sort of shared with them from my heart. I was very nervous to do this. You know, this is like
at least a hundred people who i've never met before and
You know, it's it's a very intimidating thing, you know to publicly speak amongst people you've never met before
um
and I just you know, kindly asked everybody to gather around and just shared that, you know, we're all away from our
our loved ones at this time and this is the first day of a six-month shoot, which is
85 percent on location predominantly on location
Uh, let's just all do what I know you will you are already doing
um and just pour ourselves into this make something that we're all just
Undeniably
super proud of um, and let's just become a team and a unit, uh, you know like a traveling company, um
This is not anything that anybody wasn't already doing, you know, we were all already doing it
um, but uh
I just wanted to sort of echo
The the sentiments that were already present and the energy that was already present and uh, we just became like that
We just became like that everybody in every department. Um, we were we were a team. We were a family a traveling company and
you know, uh anytime we see someone who's part of the lanterns team now, it's like a nod and a
And a and a and a salute, you know, well the first day on set you could just
Say that was the read-through once all the producers dc
hbo all these strangers in a room and you're reading your character for the very first time
And bringing what you think you want to play and how you want to play it to this room of people who are counting on you
and and uh
I think within like 10 minutes of the read-through
The lines were being read like it was a radio drama
It was happening at the table and you could feel I could feel the electricity
You know, I was waiting for my next line. I wasn't I wasn't like oh god. I gotta talk again
and
at the end of it you could just tell like everyone was very relieved and
Excited I think and that's how it all started
Yeah. Yeah. The first day was the read-through but actual first day filming
Um, because I never feel like that that confident in a read-through I read through all I want to do afterwards is
Talk to everyone in the room and say this that's not how i'm gonna do
Like i'm not gonna do it that way so don't sack me yet just um,
eh
Eh, but then the first day I remember filming was sort of at the macon
Ranch outside. You remember you had to do the key thing
Yeah, I think that was my first day and I could not
There was a certain point in the day where james
and um
chris
Looked like okay good, you know, like I felt like because I felt like um
Nerves get to you and you forget how to walk
and
You know, it just is all a bit overwhelming
And also they had me standing in a weird sort of dip in the land. I remember
Oh, she was complaining about that big time short anyway
And then they were like, there's your mark on the ground
I was like what in that hole like and then I was like
And then it was my first day
so I just did what I was told but I was like
Really aware that whenever I sort of walked towards you I was like like short anyway, and then I would just sort of
Yeah, it was about three inches shorter. It was perfect
Well, I got a lot of memories about being on set. Um
I remember being
Really excited to be on set again. This was soon after the strike. Yeah, and the fact that there was so many people involved
Uh, my first day was like this incredibly beautiful location. I'm sitting on a horse just under
big sky
We're in the la area. So I see a lot of familiar faces on the crew from you know, a long career
It just felt like a real sort of
Rejuvenative if that's a word
You know coming home kind of moment which I really loved and uh
Uh, yeah, that's what i'll say. Yeah
I think my first scene was the bar scene and the
sex scene in the car
Oh, okay. So two errand scenes. Sure a little bit
interesting
I've done shows where
The makeout scene is like I don't know why they keep it right up front. I know it's weird. It's weird, right?
So it's like well, sorry, I didn't catch your name. Sorry
Um
But it was with uh, james. Oh, I know it was with james hawes, but we had done a rehearsal of those scenes
So that was wonderful and kind of it took the pressure off
The thing that stands to the first time I flew
I mean the first time they got all the wiring set up and set the suit up and you know and did that
uh outside of rehearsal because
They always they always jack up the the pressure on the machine to make it look nice, you know in rehearsal
It's like oh, yeah, I can do this and then the next time it's like shooting out of a rubber band
It's like there he goes. Yeah
But that was that was uh, that was interesting
and then the next one for me would be the the very last scene in the show, which I can't talk about as far as
As far as everything but the the emotional context of it was uh, it was it was really wonderful to be part of
I am I think um for me
I realized what I was involved in really and it was in the um
when we were doing the the
scenes in the football field
And there was all these dead bodies lying around and and you guys up on the sands and it was so american and then
and I was
being so american and this big cowboy hat and a sheriff's badge and my cowboy boots and
And and I had
You know, it was it just sort of
Frightened frightened me quite a lot when I suddenly realized the scope of everything that I'd
Asserted I was actually doing. Yeah
She has no idea how wonderful she actually is. She's not joking around when she's saying this
She has no idea how great she is
And there's so much I
When you see us on camera together, it's full-on combat
acting
We had so much fun
She yeah pinching yourself
She can
I can give it but I can't take it and she can give it and hurt my feelings and she was great at it
I think I would say there was a scene that we shot. There were multiple scenes that we shot in
the literal desert
um, and I remember that day
I can't remember exactly what my action was, but I think I had to sort of
Stare into the distance at something
and we're in the desert and the wind started to pick up and it started to sort of
uh
Really enforce itself. Um
and um
Like having to stare while there's sand and dirt everything going and your eyes are just getting just burning
That was probably the other stuff
You know, I love it. I dive in you know, it is what it is
It's it's a joy to do all of that. That was challenging, you know having to hold my
My stare while i'm contending with all of the elements
But you know, we had we had the team on deck for the the eye rinse and all of that stuff
So yeah, the sketch scene was was
Out of my wheelhouse. Yeah
but uh
I only kind of enjoyed it. Yeah
I'll do it again. He was great. He's so good in it
um, yeah for me, you know someone asked me that and I actually recently said yeah the sex scene not because
It was very intimidating for me to do
And I just remember like I was like, okay don't eat anything that's gonna bloat you that day
Don't eat anything that's gonna bloat you. Aaron is like what is bloating?
I'm like, you know when I eat something I look like six months pregnant. He was like i've never been bloated I guess
All right
got up
Um, yes, it was it was I don't know. I don't know why I was intimidated
I I was I was I was terrified a little bit that stuff's tricky particularly for the women
I think I think it's tricky
We had a wonderful intimate intimacy coordinator and gita patel, uh director that scene and it was a very very beautifully held
space for me and us actually
But it's still it's it's still intimidating, you know
And you guys really earned it too because that my favorite scene between you is when you're just you're standing in that door jam
Yes in five and there's just so much pain and goodbye energy between you and then you earned it with all that other stuff
this ring
It's the greatest weapon in the universe
When and if to use it, that's the whole ball game jr. Did you just use that ring to counterfeit money? No
Tell me how you got it the ring, you know how I got that sure as hell didn't interview for it
Oh ----, maybe you should have power like that. Shouldn't you have to work for it?
I've been doing this since you were a baby. The only way you're gonna get this ring is over my dead ******* body
I think he likes me
Everybody is lying to us
You're not even here till we find out what they're hiding
