I tried making sandwiches out of something other than keto bread, and let me tell you,
some were amazing, some actually shocked me, and others were just simply downright ridiculous.
If you like to scroll social media, you've probably come across some really cool looking
keto hacks. And I've seen a lot of creative ways to make keto sandwiches other than using bread
or chaffles. So I figured I'd try some of these popular ones so I can give my honest review.
Now let's get to tasting so I can show you which ones you should make.
First, I think it's important that we all know the proper way to make a lettuce wrap sandwich.
There's nothing worse than biting into a lettuce wrap sandwich and it just falls apart.
So I'm going to attempt to make an unwich the Jimmy John's style.
According to a couple of videos I watched, the key is to use two sheets of parchment paper.
You want to cut the iceberg lettuce in half and then core it out. And once after you've washed
your lettuce and let it dry completely, we're going to layer down around five to eight pieces
of the lettuce in a small rectangle. Then we add our favorite sandwich fixings,
lots of mayo. I'm doing turkey, bacon, mustard. And then the rolling of the sandwich is the key.
You want to start with one corner and tuck it over the sandwich. Tuck it tightly because we're
going to roll this super tight. And then start rolling and tucking at the same time.
Then we'll fold in those edges and complete the roll. Cut in half and wow, look at this beauty.
So now let's see how this holds up. I think the key too is to leave the parchment paper on.
That's what Jimmy John's does. It's so good.
Okay, so I know most of us have already had a lettuce wrap sandwich before.
So let's try something else other than lettuce. Let's use a cucumber.
I've seen some videos where they slice the cucumber in half lengthwise and then dig out
the middle and then just use the two halves as bread. But we're going to try something
a little bit different. This is going to be inspired off of a video I saw on TikTok.
Instead, we're going to make a wrap. We're going to layer down slices of cucumber and then we'll
roll it up. I'm using a mandolin so that I can get even slices, but a potato peeler will also work.
You need around three or four slices of cucumber. And now we spread on some cream cheese,
except it doesn't want to spread because it has so much moisture on it. So make sure you
pat it dry first with a paper towel and then spread on your cream cheese.
Then sprinkle a little bit of Italian seasoning and I'm going to add pepperoni and pepperoncinis.
And then we roll it from the bottom.
And this does not want to roll very well. So I looked up on the video again and saw that she
had made a clean cut on the very edge of her cucumber slices to get rid of that green hard
part. And then it was easier to roll, kind of. And she secured it with a toothpick and it looks
like I'm going to have to do that too. And I got to tell you, any sandwich that I have to secure
with a toothpick in order to hold it together just lost points in my book. Not only that,
but it's super slippery from all the moisture from the cucumber. Okay, let's give it a whirl.
Oh man, it needs to be blotted off again. So much moisture. Messy. It's good though. Wow,
really good. That cucumber sandwich is a mess to eat, but it is really good. So I actually recommend
it. Instead of cucumber, let's try another popular replacement for tortilla, which is
cheese slices. I took these instructions off of Gam Gam's kitchen on TikTok. And you know,
if a grandma made it, it probably has to be good. I loved everything my grandma made. Layer down
four slices of pepper jack cheese or whatever cheese you want to use on a sheet of parchment
paper or a splat mat. I'm going to cook mine in the air fryer at 340 degrees for around seven to
eight minutes, but you could also bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for around eight to 10 minutes.
You just want to cook it until the edges start to get golden and crispy. Then we're going to let it
cool for a few minutes, but not too much or else it might get too hard to roll. Spread on mayo,
deli meat, any of your favorite fixings, and then you roll. Oh, yuck. Look at that mayo seeping
through. It looks like pus. Okay, let's try this. It certainly is greasy from that cheese.
I like it. This is similar to having those folio wraps. I think they're called folio wraps,
where it's just a cheese wrap, but a lot cheaper to make and easier to make on your own too.
I like these because you can hold onto them. It does leave my fingers a little bit greasy,
but it's something that I could definitely pack in my lunch.
Up next, we're going to be using the incredible edible egg, and this is a hard-boiled egg. I don't
know if you guys have seen people make mini little sliders out of eggs, hard-boiled eggs,
but that's what we're going to be making. They're so cute, but I just have a hunch that they're
going to be really impractical and kind of a pain if you wanted to make up a bunch.
Slice the egg in half lengthwise, and in order for your egg to lay flat, you're going to need
to cut off this bottom part here, just so it has a flat surface to lay up against,
and I'm going to keep the yolk in there, but if you want to take it out, you can,
and I'm going to spread on some mayo, and I'm using my Dalmatian spatula because it's just so
cute, and it's the perfect size. Then we add lettuce, tomato, a slice of bacon, and cheese,
and then I top it with some Everything Bagel seasoning, and these are super cute. I can see
why they're so popular on social media, and they would be so fun to serve at a party.
They're kind of messy because I think I put too much mayo in it, but they're actually quite tasty.
It's almost like having a deviled egg with like a sandwich inside. I would definitely make these,
especially for some sort of like a potluck where I need to bring an appetizer. I think
they'd go over very well. Another popular one on the internet right now is the bell pepper sandwich,
and I've actually already tried this. You guys have seen my shorts video. I do short little
videos on YouTube. You can watch me make one of those, but I already know this one is fantastic,
and it actually really shocked me because I thought it was going to be a pain in the butt
to eat because I just thought it was going to fall apart and be a mess. I also didn't think it was
going to taste very good because I don't really care for raw bell pepper, but I was so surprised.
I actually have made several since then, and it's kind of like a go-to lunch for me right now,
but look at these layers of cream cheese, cold cuts, cheese, tomato, bacon, sprouts. You could
really fill this with anything, and you can hold onto it. It doesn't get my hands all slimy or
greasy, and it packs up very well, and it's easy to eat too. See, I can bite into it, and the
sandwich still stays intact. I love the crisp from the bell pepper when you bite into it. If
you're someone that's a texture person and loves crunchy things, you'll love this recipe,
and you don't have to use green bell pepper. You can use any color. I like green bell pepper just
because it's less sugar and less carbs in it. Since bell pepper worked, let's try an avocado.
I've seen this floating around the internet a couple of times, and I just know it's going to
be a disaster. I mean, avocados, you can't really hold onto them unless you keep the peel on,
but then you end up eating the peel, but let's see where this takes us. After you slice your
avocado in half, remove the seed and the peel on the outside, and then we're going to spread
some mayo and then add our sandwich fixings, and of course it's going to fall over. Like,
this thing is not balanced, and it is so slippery. It's so frustrating.
What a mess. It's like so much avocado too. Quite a lot of avocado for one bite,
so this avocado sandwich, don't recommend. If anything, I would just eat all of the fixings
with a fork. Let's try using bacon as our sandwich bread. We're going to be making a
bacon weave sandwich, and let me just say that the bacon weave sandwich was actually the original
keto sandwich, well, that and cloud bread, before any of these other options were available. I've
been making this thing for 10 years. Actually, I haven't made it in 10 years just because I wasn't
really a big fan of the effort. We didn't have air fryers back then, so you had to cook it in
the oven, and I just couldn't wait for my bacon weave to be made, so I really only made it a few
times. Basically, you weave your cut slices of bacon in and out, and then we bake it in a 375
degree oven for around 10 to 15 minutes or until it's cooked. I'm going to be cooking mine in the
air fryer. It's the same temperature, but it only takes around eight minutes to make. Then we let
it cool and spread on some mayo, lettuce, and tomato, and this is just like a BLT sandwich,
but without the bread. Pretty greasy, but it's good. Especially if you're someone who likes bacon,
this sandwich is for you. Me, I love bacon, but it's a little bit overpowering, the bacon flavor.
Have you ever thought about using a tomato as your bread? I saw this on TikTok, and I thought
I had to try it just because I thought it was super unique, but I do not have high hopes for this one.
You need to get two slices of tomato, and of course I have to pat it dry with paper towels
because that's the theme of the day. Every sandwich bread that we tend to use that involves vegetables
tends to have a lot of moisture on it, so we got to pat it dry. In the video I watched, the girl
made a tuna sandwich, so that's what we're going to do. Put that on along with some mustard,
give it a final pat dry, and here we go.
It's literally dripping juices as I eat it, and I really don't care to get my fingers wet when I
eat a sandwich. I would eat this with a fork and a knife probably, and it needs some salt on the
outside of the tomato, but of course that's gonna drop the moisture too, it's gonna be even wetter.
So yeah, not really a fan. And this is an older idea, but I thought I would include it,
the pickle sandwich. After you slice your pickle, you carve it out the inside so that all of your
fixings can sit into place, and I have to pat it dry of course.
And I'm gonna use ham because I love pickles with ham. And then gotta add the yellow mustard.
And it is so cute, ridiculously small.
It's good, but everything tends to fall out to the side when I eat it,
so it's kind of messy, but it's good.
I must say that after trying all of these keto sandwiches, it makes me really appreciate my
keto 90 second bread and wonder bread chocolate recipe, because those at least I can hold on to
them, they don't make a mess, and I can easily pack them in my lunch. What do you guys think
of all these options? Let me know if you've tried something or if you think I should try
something else that I didn't in this video, let me know down in the comments. As far as my favorite
goes, bell pepper sandwich, probably the best one because I can hold on to it and it tastes good.
