The FBI has a new director.
Kash Patel was confirmed by the Senate this afternoon.
NTD correspondent Jason Blair has the update.
The yeas are 51, the nays are 49.
The confirmation is confirmed.
Kash Patel squeezes through the Senate to become the new director of the FBI with a
vote 51 to 49.
There were 51 Republican votes, and all Democrats and Independents voted no, with two Republicans,
Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joining the noes.
Ahead of the vote, Murkowski said that her opposition stems from Patel's past political
activity.
She said, quote, I have been disappointed that when he had the opportunity to push back
on the administration's decision to force the FBI to provide a list of agents involved
in the January 6th investigations, he failed to do so.
Patel is leading the FBI at a time of unrest.
President Donald Trump and other Republicans have alleged on several occasions that the
FBI is being used for political purposes.
And at the same time, the FBI has lost the trust of many Americans who fear the agency
has become politicized.
He has said on day one he plans to, quote, shut down the FBI headquarters.
And he's falsely claimed that the FBI, quote, was planning the January 6th event for a year
beforehand.
There is no truth to that statement, Mr. President.
FBI directors serve 10-year terms.
However, the commander in chief does have the power to remove them.
And nominee Linda McMahon moves forward in her nomination to lead the Department of Education.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee voted to advance McMahon.
The committee voted 12 to 11 along party lines.
McMahon served as Trump's small business administration head during his first term.
There's been no word yet when a full Senate vote will happen.
