No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and it is not the same man.
Realize that war is common and justice is strife, and that all things come into being
and pass away through strife. There is nothing permanent except change.
Because it is so unbelievable, the truth often escapes being known.
To God all things are fair and good and right, but men hold some things wrong and some right.
Thinking is a sacred disease and sight is deceptive. You can't go home again,
your childhood is lost, the friends of your youth are gone, your present is slipping away from you,
nothing is ever the same. Other men are unaware of what they do when they are awake,
just as they are forgetful of what they do when they are asleep.
Everything flows and nothing abides, everything gives way and nothing stays fixed.
Dogs bark at what they don't understand. The cosmos works by harmony of tensions,
like lyre and bow. Good and evil are one. On the one hand God sees all as well, fair and good.
On the other hand a human sees injustice here, justice there. Justice in our minds is strife.
We cannot help but see war makes us as we are. War is the father of all and the king of all.
It proves some people gods and some people men. It makes some people slaves and some people free.
If they are gods, why do you lament them? If you lament them, you must no longer regard them as
gods. Stupidity is better kept a secret than displayed. You cannot step twice into the same
river, for other waters are continually flowing in. Unless you expect the unexpected, you will
not find it, for it is hidden and thickly tangled. Many fail to grasp what they have seen and cannot
judge what they have learned, although they tell themselves they know. Whoever cannot seek the
unforeseen sees nothing, for the known way is an impasse. What was scattered gathers, what was
gathered blows away. The waking have one world in common, sleepers meanwhile turn aside, each into
a darkness of his own. The unseen harmony is better than the visible. The poet was a fool who
wanted no conflict among us, gods or people. Harmony needs low and high, as progeny needs man and woman.
The prophet's voice, possessed of God, requires no ornament, no sweetening of tone, but carries
over a thousand years. A stupid man loves to be puzzled by every discourse. The content of your
character is your choice. Day by day you choose what you think and what you do is who you become.
Abundance of knowledge does not teach men to be wise. Good character is not formed in a week or a
month, it is created little by little, day by day. Protracted and patient effort is needed to develop
good character. To get everything you want is not a good thing. Disease makes health seem sweet.
Hunger leads to the appreciation of being full fed. Tiredness creates the enjoyment of resting.
Our envy always lasts longer than the happiness of those we envy. If you do not hope, you will
not win that which is not hopeful, since it is unattainable and inaccessible. What sense or thought
do they have? They follow the popular singers and they take the crowd as their teacher.
Opposition brings concord. Out of discord comes the fairest harmony. To do the same thing over
and over again is not only boredom, it is to be controlled by, rather than control what you do.
Eyes and ears are poor witnesses to people if they have uncultured souls.
Eyes are more accurate witnesses than ears. Learning many things does not teach understanding.
