The Calgary Flames are off to a historically bad start to the season,
like genuinely one of the worst in the entire history
of professional hockey, and things are looking really, really bad.
So many players have been disappointments,
and something absolutely needs to change.
We're going to get to all that more in this video,
but first I want to welcome you to Flames Digest. I'm Mark Griffith.
If you're new around here and you love the Flames, make sure you
subscribe so you can stay up to date on all the latest news,
updates, reports, and rumors revolving around your Calgary Flames.
we would love to welcome you to the Flames Digest family
and i mean it just speaks for itself but
this is a historically bad start to the season
for the flames i'm going to address it once again
i am recording this at work i love getting
these videos out to you guys as soon as possible during
the day and i've just been working
so many late days lately want to get it recorded at work i mean
thankfully the office isn't too bad it's
a little embarrassing if you're recording in front of
people but uh don't have my mic again
so i'm hoping this sounds okay to you guys please let
me know down below if it doesn't
and I won't record like this again but um the audio might
be bad but actually for sure is bad
and just seemingly is getting worse and worse are our
Calgary Flames once again not only did we lose
the game not only are we only the only team in the
league without a point but we got smoked again 7-3
and the Flames gave us some false hope in this
game to be honest we were you know tied after one it
was 1-1 Klapka scored an absolute worldly a
beauty of a toe drag snipe for a wonderful goal assisted
by Castagna Georgie gets his first career
nhl point shout out to him which was awesome
but otherwise you know the flames they get blasted in
the third period especially to lose this one 7-3 i mean hey
at least we didn't get stuck at one goal
we actually scored three but you're not going to win games
when you're giving up seven goals
remember that stat from the past couple seasons
of the Flames are however good in games where
they score at least three goals yeah those days
are gone now we just give up goals we feed them
out like it's the Oprah Winfrey show
but um let's get into the box score here to you start off so
Coolio once again just a horrible game
for our goalie he gives up seven goals on just 30 shots
for the .767 save percentage
and i always say was every goal his fault no of course not but i mean
when you're giving up seven goals on just 30 shots
that is horrible our goaltending has been horrible
this season that was our one saving grace last year
and a lot of people are thinking hey the
Flames are one of the best tandems in the league they will
not be saying that anymore based off of
our early performances this season if we get into the box score now
or into the skaters on the score
sheet Backlund gets a goal Kevin Bahl of all people gets
a goal Klapka like i said scored that
beautiful goal uh Sharky the only person to have
a positive plus minus for the Flames last night
he picks up an assist so shout out to Sharky
not the guy you'd expect when I say that stat
Farabee gets an assist Strom gets an assist
and like I said Costagna got an assist as well so
happy again that we got three goals something
to cheer about for the home crowd there but when
you're giving up seven as well it's just
not going well, something I kind of teased a little bit too
was the standings, we're the only team without
a point, we're not the only team without a win as
Philly and LA want to join us in the, you know, abandoned
for landon scenario going on here, but at
least they've picked up some Daryl Sutter points
the Flyers have two, the Kings have one, so we are
officially the only team without a point at this point
in the year, yes, there's still 80 games to go
but we're the worst by far, I mean look
at that negative 17 goal differential, it's funny too
because I'm not just, you know, hyping this up saying it's
a historically bad start, it genuinely
is one of the worst starts, not for the Flames
because it just is our worst ever start, I was
looking at our our worst ever records after four games
and the goal differential, this one is the
worst by far, I'm pretty sure second worst
was just last year, um, and we weren't even close to being
this bad, but um yeah, only team without a point, it has
been again historically bad to me, another
thing too, like I said kind of in the intro
is that there's been so many players that have been
disappointments to me, where is the first line, where
are Gridden, Coronado, Frost on the score
sheet, I mean I know the the stats don't always tell
the whole story, I'm not saying those guys
are playing bad but where are they Gridden has
been a huge disappointment in my eyes i'm not
giving up on him just like i'm not giving up
on you know Perreault Coronado Frost any of those guys
but man it would be nice if they could get
a little bit of something going i would say
again I don't think Gridden's a bad player
but where is he right now I know he's on a bad Flames
team but where is he we were expecting him to step up
a little more another guy that's been a major
disappointment is this guy here Simon Nemetz I know once again
the stats don't tell the whole
story and we're only four games in but as of right now he does
not look like he is worth his price
tag that the Flames gave up I'm not saying we have
to judge the trade now we're only four games in
but we gave up a lot for this guy
and I know he had some flashes especially in that home opener
against Seattle where we ended up getting destroyed
but man he has really really underwhelmed me so
far and just I don't know he looks invisible out there at times
which has been a little bit
disappointing to me the Flames in general I'm going
to show some more stats in a second too
but one graphic that I absolutely love that I'm able
to make now for you guys is this one it's
the race for the Pacific Division title
and I'll show you just how good it's going for the Flames
here goes by date we're racking it up how
are the standings looking as we head into october
oh we're not too bad because we haven't played
much huge dip we still haven't won all those
other teams are kind of crisscrossing
because they're actually getting points and lo and behold
we're at the bottom i think this is the perfect graphic
to show throughout the year the race for
the pacific division as it actually will
be hopefully a race between some of those teams
we will not be in there it's hilarious to see vancouver up there
but uh yeah obviously we're
right at the bottom I think it's going to be awesome
for kind of everyone who's on board with
the tank to see this graphic we just dipped at the very beginning
because we just started there
in fifth for whatever reason I don't even know why we're there
but we're at the bottom now and
I think that's what counts for most people
but if I go back into maybe some of the stats of this just
historically bad start once again
as Colton Baxter's pointing out here we are coming for
history we are being compared to the worst teams in NHL history
and again it's only four games in
at the time of the screenshot it was just three
but it's the lowest points percentage in a season
in NHL history so you think
of that you know Washington Capitals team in the mid-70s when
they became a team they were absolutely terrible
the Philadelphia Quakers back in the 30s you get
the expansion Senators expansion Sharks
and then you get obviously more teams like the Quakers who
just aren't even teams anymore
the Pittsburgh Pirates I mean LA Kings are in there as well
from just this season but that's again it's it's early days
in the Quebec Bulldogs when you're
being compared to teams from the 1930s 20s
and even the late 1910s this ain't good again it's
early I'm sure we won't end up being this bad
but there's a chance my best friend asked me today he
was like do you think the Flames will win a game
this season I said I don't know I'm hoping for
maybe 10 wins to be quite honest with you
that's how bad we currently are taking that a little bit
further going back to the goal tending matchsticks
and gasoline here so i think this was before the
game he said Flames goalies with 18 goals against
on 96 shots rocking a crisp .812 save percentage
now it's at an 807 save percentage through 14
or sorry through 14 through four games doesn't
matter who you are that's going to get you an 0
and four record almost every time but especially
when you can't score goalies need to be better regardless
of chances they're facing so no matter
the lack of goals we're scoring there's no shot
our goalies should have an .807 save percentage
through four games that is absolutely horrendous
and unacceptable that's in my eyes the most reason
we know it's really bad but it's somehow getting worse
that even our goalies can't do anything
anymore like they used to which
is i i've gotta say you gotta laugh through the pain a little bit
so i have two little joke memes to show you here's
the first one i saw it came from at King Demidov
saying could the Calgary Flames beat a beer league team
and it certainly seems like we couldn't at
this point relegate us to the AHL
and we might not even win a game it has just been so bad for
the Flames this year and i thought that was you have
to laugh through the pain i thought that was
a pretty funny one another one here quite harsh as well
but uh it says the city of Calgary has
decided to put the Saddle Dome out of its misery
by demolishing it right now instead of forcing it
to witness this season of Flames hockey it
it's been an awful season so far and just two
home games we've given up 13 goals and have no wins yet
and it's just been again it just gets
worse and worse it's so bad something's got
to change whether it's you know a severe coaching
change or something goes on with the lineup a big trade
who knows we just need to get the bad juju
out and i know it's a rebuilding year we're not expected to be good
but getting crushed every
game is no fun for any fan to watch well
at least any Flames fan i should say now let's get into the
second part here and talk a little bit about
the rumor mill because the Flames have been
definitely involved a little bit more lately uh first one i have
to show here is from Frank
Saravalli so again take it with a grain of salt
but it's on that Line A stuff once again so Patrick
Line A isn't the only free agent for the Flames
are in conversation with after a rough start still
unsigned is Vladimir Tarasenko, David Perron, JVR
and Jonathan Drouin i don't want the Flames to sign
any of those guys that takes a roster spot away
and it's not like they're going to lead us to win
Some of those guys are great scorers.
I mean, Tarasenko's proven it in the past.
Perron's a proven winner.
JVR, who doesn't love that guy?
Drew, I mean, he just takes a roster spot.
I'm not too pleased about that.
But we don't need any of these guys or Line A, in my opinion.
It just makes no sense.
Unless you're signing them to trade them for something at the deadline,
then maybe go for it.
Otherwise, we don't need to bring in these kind of, I mean,
geriatrics at this point into a youth-infused year for the Flames.
Next little rumor here.
it comes from Friedman again on the Line A stuff
so he said I'd heard that Calgary had kind of
looked a little bit at Patrick Laine, on paper it makes sense
but you've got all these young kids
that you want to give opportunities
to is a young kid coming off your power play if you get Laine
there and the answer is yes you look at last game Sunyev
was on there he surely would not only not
be on the power play but probably wouldn't
be in the NHL either if you bring in a guy like Laine
so um I understand why people would
be interested personally I am not interested in that one bit
the last one here comes from Anthony DeMarco
this one about Whitecloud, not Laine but he said
speaking with Flyers sources last week Whitecloud's name
was brought up as an archetype for
the type of defenseman the team would be looking
to add does that mean specifically that the Flyers
are trying to acquire Whitecloud maybe probably
but it also means a player like him if you can't
get him if the price is too steep we're only going
to sell him if the price is too steep if we get
something really good back
because he provides a lot for this team i mean i say that and we give
up six seven goals every single game
so it doesn't really matter at that point seems like his value
is decreasing but that's just me being pessimistic right now
because the Flames stink hopefully if
we do end up trading Whitecloud it
is for something really good and Philly could be a
great destination because they are desperate right now uh let's get
into the comments of the day to
wrap up this video as we love to do here
on the channel comes from yesterday's video of course and
you know we didn't have Matthew's comment
of saying you know four down 80 to go for the L
but Roger here R Dunkley says oh it's gonna be a long season
and it most certainly is it has been
so painful we're only four games
in and it's already just the worst year of our lives as
Flames fans so hopefully you can get a little bit better
but there's no denying it is going to be a
long season thank you so much for watching

you saw here today and have a wonderful rest of your day
