The instructor guides the viewer through establishing a horizon line and vanishing points to create structured, realistic architectural shapes, starting with a single building and expanding into a street scene with multiple structures.
Hi, Tom here and welcome to this week's Circle Line Art School drawing,
episode 425, in this drawing I'll show you one easy way to draw buildings
using two-point perspective, the first step
is to draw a horizontal line across your page,
slightly below the middle of the height of the page,
next we can place the first vanishing point on the far right of this line,
it could go anywhere, but we're going to place it on the far right,
in this drawing all parallel lines going towards the right
will look like they would meet at this one vanishing point,
this drawing is in two-point perspective, but we only need one vanishing point
at the moment, next we can draw a line for the base of the building,
from the vanishing point to somewhere on the left of the page,
now we can draw a vertical line which is parallel to the vertical lines of the
edge of the paper, somewhere on the left of the drawing,
next we can divide this area on the left, which is going to be the front of the
building, with some more receding lines going to
our vanishing point, our first vanishing point,
which is at the far right hand edge of our drawing and on the horizon line,
so we're dividing up the wall of the building, we can add another vertical
line parallel to the first vertical line that
we drew as well, next we can divide the space up using a
series of vertical and diagonal lines, you could use a
ruler if you want for the first lines or you could just
draw them freehand, we can draw a doorway with an arch
on the far right of the building, now in this drawing
we're starting with the basic shape, so we've got the basic shape of the
building in perspective, in one-point perspective at the moment,
on the left hand side, so this panel here
we can divide it with a horizontal line in perspective,
so it's going at an angle towards the vanishing point on the right,
in this drawing each time we create a basic shape
we can add more details to the basic shapes as we go along
and then above the detailing at the bottom of the building
we could double up these lines to make it a thickness, maybe a thickness
of some stonework in the building and then it could overlap on the left
hand side a little bit, next we could divide the upper part of
the building into some areas for windows, so we can
create the top and the bottom receding lines
for the windows first and then we can read up the vertical
lines from some of the structure that we've already drawn
in the lower half of the building, so we have a series of windows
above, which sort of line up to some extent to what's happening below,
so I think I'll put four, maybe five windows along here
and if I make the top line of the windows darker I can remember
and see where the windows are, so we're using guidelines
to create the structure to place details in,
at the top here we could have another receding line going to our vanishing
point on the right and then we could read up from the
measurements, from the sort of visual measurements that we've already done,
we can read up the lines, the vertical lines from the
windows in the middle to the higher part of the building,
so that they're all parallel to each other in their vertical
stance, so all the vertical lines are roughly parallel to each other,
so all the vertical lines line up together more or less
and again if you just make the base or the top of the windows darker
then it's easier to remember where they are, now I think I'll
add a series of windows above the curved doorway,
again just lining up the vertical lines one on top of another,
at the top of the drawing, at the very top of the drawing on the left,
we could add another part of a story of the building,
but this is cut off by the edge of the drawing, now
any shape that's cut off by the edge of the frame of the drawing,
by the edge of the paper, it will look like it's bigger and near to,
which is what we want, as this drawing is in the foreground of the drawing, it's at
the front of the drawing, next I think we could add a few more
details to the larger window area on the ground floor,
dividing it into smaller shapes using vertical and
diagonal lines, vertical lines stay vertical and
diagonal lines go to the vanishing point on the right,
now I think it's time to add the second vanishing point,
this time we can place the vanishing point on the far left of the drawing,
but still on the horizon line, we can use this
second vanishing point for all the parallel receding lines
that recede to the left, so now we have two vanishing points,
one for the lines going towards the left and one for the parallel lines going
towards the right, at this stage it might be a good idea to
erase some of the guidelines that we no longer need,
and so from the new vanishing point on the left we can draw a receding line
for the base of some new buildings and then also a higher receding line
for the guideline of the top of the new buildings,
now where the baseline going to the right crosses the baseline going to the
left, somewhere in the center of the drawing,
we can draw a vertical line for a corner of a building
and then we can draw another vertical line for the left hand edge of the
corner of this new building and then we can just darken the line
at the base, so that we can see where the new building is,
then we can use the vanishing point on the right to draw the receding lines
going to the right, going away from us to the right, next we
can draw another vertical line closer to us, nearer the foreground,
on the right of the vertical line that we just drew
and then this will be yet another building,
closer to us, but this time on the right, so now we have the basic structure of
this drawing of buildings in two-point perspective,
