Was this what it took for you to leave?
I guess so. It's something small.
You know what I like to share?
When I'm speaking with the youth, when my finger is chopped off,
it was just like a small sacrifice to get out of that lifestyle.
I'm trying to understand why a gang is sending a 16-year-old kid
from Brampton, Ontario,
about 3,000 kilometres into Pelican Narrows to sell drugs.
They'll get arrested, but they'll be released right away.
There's no real consequences to the youth.
They get a slap on the wrist, especially if they don't say any names
When they get taken in, they
They get a really, really fast-paced track
to getting their name well-recognized in the gang life.
And with that comes power, a sense of power anyway.
You're lucky to be alive today.
I'm very blessed, yes.
What did you go through?
How many brushes with death did you have?
Some nurses and doctors say I have more
scars than a two-time war veteran.
I've been in car accident rollovers, and I've been macheted.
I have a big scar going right across my face here.
I've got a big, giant scar in my back.
Other times, it was my pinky being chopped off.
The crew that I used to roll with, they just asked for my pinky.
Why did they ask for your pinky?
It's an oath for me to keep my mouth quiet with some
of the things that happened in my life with them.
What I'm doing today with the youth, sharing.
I got their blessing. A lot of them, they see the change.
They said, we want your pinky.
If we ever see you selling drugs, hanging around in their bars,
or even saying that I'm a part of their crew,
if they ever hear that, then I'll be dead.
When you see young people who are now struggling with drugs,
struggling with that life, what do you see when you see that?
Well, I see myself.
These kids don't even know that there's a better way.
And that's what drives me to help.
And to put ourselves out there,
it's about seeing change in their lives.
