Hi, we're Jordana and Grant from Shot in the Dark Travel.
Come join us on our epic adventures around Southeast Asia.
So it's our final day here in Vietnam and we're in Saigon
and what better way to celebrate than a Bar Mie Festival.
We're super lucky that this is on on our last day and it's their last day of doing it as well so
we're super super excited to try lots of Bar Mie and it's the first of its kind in Vietnam.
We've had a lot of Bar Mies while we've been in Vietnam, it's been one of the highlights.
It's definitely one of the traditional dishes that we'd recommend you try whilst you're here.
It's basically a baguette with loads of different meats,
veg, some sauces inside, some pate, it's absolutely gorgeous.
You have to try it while you're here.
Last time we were in Saigon we went to the best rated one in town
which was Bar Mie Huynh Hoa and we absolutely loved it
and in our video lots of people commented saying we need to try some of their favourites
so we thought whilst we're here at the festival we'll try out some of the others
and we can work out which one is the best one.
So when you guys come you can get the best Bar Mie in Saigon.
Have a good ice cream.
So we will be coming back here once we've had some Bar Mie.
I'm not an absolute animal, we're not gonna have ice cream for breakfast
but we will have it for dessert.
Sorry, do you want one or two squid tentacles?
I'm okay thank you.
It is hot guys and it is crazy busy in there
so we thought we'd nip into the place across the road
so we can properly try the Bar Mies and tell you what we think in a less crazy environment
and get a nice cold beer.
So first Bar Mie of the day is from Grandma Lu's.
So there's a couple of these in District 1 in Central Ho Chi Minh City
and it looks really nice.
So inside this one is four different types of pork.
So there is pork floss, ham, barbecue pork and pork sausage
and there's a lot going on in there
and obviously there's the veggie inside and the sauces.
So I'm excited to give this one a try.
Oh that crunch sounded good.
Wow that is very very flavoursome.
That is a very very nice Bar Mie.
It was slightly sweet which threw me off a little bit.
I don't know if that's the pork floss but it was really really good.
It was, yeah it's gonna be hard to beat that but we'll see how the other ones get on.
So here we go.
That is good.
Really really nice.
I don't know what sauce is in it but it's super good.
Jordan has just been asked for photos with about seven different people in a minute.
I'm not even kidding.
As soon as they finished more wanted them.
It kind of felt like I think people was getting the wrong idea
because more and more people was asking for pictures.
I think people thought it like I must have been a celebrity or something
because there was just like a crowd of people around me.
It was really weird.
I think it's one of those moments where when people start queuing for it
everyone's like well there must be something going on there
so then more people are queuing for photos.
So weird.
We're having such a good time so far at the Bar Mie Festival.
There is so much going on.
There's loads of Bar Mie as you'd expect
but there's also just loads of other stalls.
There's barbecue, there's sushi, there's Japanese.
There's loads going on.
Loads of tasty drinks and Jordan is just queuing up for a beef burger at the minute.
And yeah it all just looks fantastic.
Smells amazing.
Can't wait to dig in.
So I'm gonna try this weird black burger thing from D.A.B I think it's called.
Don't get angry at me.
I know it's not Bar Mie but it's a black burger and I wanted to try it.
This is gonna be the weirdest thing I think I've tried and I've tried some weird stuff.
This is weird but let's go for it.
Let's see the inside.
It's very doughy.
Probably a bit too much bread but yeah I think it just kind of tastes like a burger.
What is missing though is some cheese.
Xin chào.
So I got a little pancake sample here.
It looks and smells delicious so I'm gonna go for it.
Super fluffy and they put like a little bit of syrup on it.
Really good.
So we're at the sandwich festival.
Jordan has managed to find the sparkling wine stand.
That's really nice though.
Trying the sparkling grape juice.
That is very very nice.
It's a little bit winey.
You wouldn't think it had no alcohol in it.
It's really good.
Delicious.
That was great.
Thank you.
So I'm now gonna try the fat loi at £19.39.
Oh this looks hefty.
Look at all that meat there.
That looks delicious.
So she was telling us that they cook the chicken,
take it off the bone and then stuff it with the pate.
I think that's what she was saying to me anyway.
So she was showing us pictures.
It looked super interesting.
Kind of a little bit gross.
So this one is a chicken and pork banh mi.
And the lady who was talking us on the stall,
it was actually her grandma that started the business.
It's been going since 1939 as you guessed from the name.
So here we go.
That pate.
Super good.
That's my favourite so far.
And the chillies in it.
Really a bit of really good spicy kick.
But it's super good.
Yeah that pate is gorgeous.
So I'm now gonna do the fat loi £9.39.
Giordano loved it so I'm very excited.
It's got a bit more of a kick to it than the last one.
This tastes like a little bit spicy.
I'm not good with spice.
It's not too spicy.
It's just a little bit of a kick.
I'd say this one's got a little bit more going on than the first one.
So yeah I'd say so far this is my favourite.
Not sure it's better than the banh mi hun hoa that we had last time we were in Saigon though.
This is very very good though.
I would definitely recommend going.
So checking out the peach iced tea stands.
Do you want to have a bit?
See what you think.
Wow that's delicious.
Really really refreshing.
Really nice.
Australian peach iced tea.
Yeah with South African peaches.
So now I'm going to try the vegan one.
It looks super interesting because it like looks like there's meat in it and it smells really good.
It smells really fresh.
Really really nice.
So this banh mi is from Bon Appetit Pad Fes.
And yeah it's a vegan banh mi and it smells super good.
And it's really weird because as you can see it looks like there's meat in it.
So yeah let's have a try.
I'm excited for this one because neither of us have ever had a vegan banh mi.
So I'm excited to see if this lives up to a traditional banh mi.
Let's try.
Not what I was expecting at all.
That's really good.
It just tastes fresher.
You can definitely tell there's a lot of veggies in there.
Yeah it tastes not like a banh mi I don't think but super good then.
So first time ever having a vegan banh mi.
It's very nice.
I don't know if I'd have known it was meat substitute if you hadn't have told me.
It's really tasty.
It doesn't taste the same as a banh mi.
It tastes quite different.
There's a lot more veg in there.
So for me that's not quite as good but it's really nice.
And if you are a vegan it's 100% worth checking out a vegan banh mi from Bon Appetit
because it is really really good.
So what did you think of the banh mi festival?
I loved the banh mi festival and if you ever come to Vietnam
one you should always have a banh mi.
I don't care what anyone says they're always really good.
So definitely find a good banh mi place anywhere in Vietnam.
There's loads.
I would also say if you're going to come to Vietnam and there's a banh mi festival
get yourself there because it was such a fun day.
We tried lots of different things other than banh mi and it was super busy
and everyone was super friendly.
And I think we've decided, well I don't know about Grant but I've decided
my favourite was Fat Lloyd 1939.
It was super tasty but all the stuff that we tried was really really good anyway.
But yeah super happy with this one.
So I would say if you're coming to Vietnam you've got to have a banh mi.
They are gorgeous.
And I wouldn't worry too much about which one you go to.
We've had absolutely loads and I'd say the only bad banh mi I've had
was from like a minimart like a 7-Eleven type place.
Everyone where we've gone to an actual place specialised banh mi has been fantastic.
So you can't really go wrong.
If you want the best one in Ho Chi Minh for me I would say it's between
banh mi Huynh Hoa that we had a few days ago which I'll link on screen.
And then next one is Fat Lloyd 1939.
They were both exceptional.
You can get to either of those.
They're both in District 1.
You will not regret it.
But if you can just go to any place that specialise in banh mi
and you will have a great time.
We've loved banh mis.
One of the highlights of Vietnam.
So guys unfortunately this is our last day in Saigon.
We're going to the airport very soon to go home and see our friends and family.
But we just want to say we absolutely loved Vietnam.
There's going to be even more vlogs coming out about Vietnam.
So keep an eye out for them.
And we will definitely be coming back to Vietnam.
It's one of our favourite favourite places in the world.
So look out for them.
And you know the drill guys.
