Video Summary
AI GeneratedCustomers are reacting with sadness and concern over the upcoming closure of the Giant Tiger store on Pembina Highway. Shoppers emphasize that the loss of this affordable option will strain their monthly budgets and reduce market competition, potentially leading to higher prices at remaining grocery stores in the area.
Look at that, right?
Jamal Wilson shows off his haul from Giant Tiger on Pemina Highway.
Bone-in is cheap, but you don't debone it yourself. Think about it.
It's become his grocery store since recently moving from Toronto.
After February, he'll have to find a new go-to.
It's closing down. It's kind of sad.
And where else in the vicinity are we going now?
Which I really don't know.
Wilson says he prefers shopping at Giant Tiger because of its prices.
Whether you make $100,000 a year or $20,000 a year, income is income.
We've got to stretch every dollar in these days.
And yeah, it's kind of sad because
think about it, it's a monopoly, right?
Because when Giant Tiger is gone, realistically,
I'm not saying anything bad about Safeway,
but all the other competition,
they can jack prices up and there's nothing we can do about it.
Rob Reimer walked out of the store with his bags full.
He's a regular at the closest location to where he lives.
He says when the store closes, it will change his shopping habits.
Well, it changes my budget completely for the month.
I mean, now there is less meat that I'm going to buy,
less other things that I'm going to buy now.
And yeah, it changes my budget for the month, for sure.
The Pemina Highway location is among a number
of Giant Tiger closures in the province over the last few years.
The Donald Street and Ellis Avenue store closes in early November.
Giant Tiger also shuttered in the PA this past summer.
Two years ago, Winnipeg locations
on McPhillips and Main Street shut down.
The Ottawa-based company has also
announced closures in Ontario and Alberta.
This shopper has fond memories of the Pemina location.
I think it's going to really affect
the community because I do see it busy.
like the parking lot's usually busy during the week,
so I know a lot of people shop here and
actually my kids started here when they first started working.
CBC News has reached out to
Giant Tiger on the latest closure but we haven't heard back yet.
