Hidden deep within the wild Digora Gorge, Frigate Castle is one of the most unusual medieval structures in the Caucasus.

Located in the abandoned village of Khanaz at around 2,000 meters above sea level, the castle carries a strong sense of isolation and has been recognized as a federal cultural heritage site of Russia.

What truly sets it apart is its striking shape: the entire structure resembles a massive ancient ship stranded on a rocky slope — giving rise to the name “Frigate Castle.”
