🏰 Schloss Berlepsch – Neo-Gothic Beauty Above the Werra Valley
Rising from the forests of the Werra Valley near Hübenthal and Witzenhausen, Berlepsch Castle stands proudly atop a hill as one of the most atmospheric castles in Hesse. The castle remains in the possession of the noble von Berlepsch family, whose connection to the site stretches back more than six centuries.
The first fortress on the hill was established in 1369. Throughout its long history, the castle experienced destruction, reconstruction, reinforcement, and repeated architectural changes shaped by wars, noble ambitions, and changing styles.
In 1881, the castle received the appearance that defines it today through a major neo-Gothic redesign. Towers, pointed roofs, and romantic medieval-inspired details transformed Berlepsch into the fairytale-like residence admired by visitors today.
From the castle grounds, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across the forests and rolling hills of the “Frau Holle Land” — a landscape deeply connected to German folklore and the famous legends collected by the Brothers Grimm.
