Whether you are trying to refine your form or just starting out, understanding the fundamentals of your motion is critical. This demonstration breaks down the essential components of a consistent stroke, beginning with your setup and golf stance.
You will see the movement through the golf backswing and how it connects to a balanced follow through. Observing the full rhythm of the stroke can help you identify areas for improvement in your own practice sessions. Focusing on these mechanics allows for better control and consistency on the course.

This video provides a beginner-friendly guide to golf fundamentals, focusing on a natural setup and simple motion to ensure consistency. By establishing a neutral posture and a basic \"arms up, body turn\" swing rhythm, golfers can avoid unnecessary compensations and create a more reliable, intuitive swing.
In this video, we are going to get you to get the correct fundamentals in a really simple
way that allows you to have a golf swing that performs in a very natural way to make you
a consistent golfer.

So when we're talking fundamentals and basics, we're talking setup and kind of let's call
it basic motion.
So from a setup point of view, let's start with our feet touching heels and toes and
get the ball opposite the center of our feet.
And then we want to stand what we feel is a rough stance in terms of distance from the
ball.
So roughly where the club would dangle and where that would be in the middle of the ball.
So the first thing I want you to do from there is basically take a shoulder width stance
and move the right foot out and the left foot out to you a shoulder width apart.
Ideally, with both feet slightly flared, the left one slightly flared more than right,
but it doesn't really matter at this stage if they're flared or not, but just shoulder
width apart.
To get your check on that, let your arms hang down and point them down straight from the
side position where they're against your rib cage and we want those fingers to be pointing
in the middle of your feet.
So we want the ball in the center for a mid to short iron, so seven, eight, nine wedge
sandwich all in the center.
But when you're starting to practice and you're a beginner, center of the stance and the mid
iron is kind of the perfect scenario.
So that's where we're going to be.
Now from that position then, stand as tall as you possibly can, tuck your chin in, get
the golf club outstretched and kind of opposite your belly button and parallel to the ground.
Now from that position, bend over keeping everything pretty stiff and still from your
hip joints till that club lands on the ground and you want that club to be landing so the
center of the club is with the center of the ball, that'll give you the idea of your distance
away from the ball.
From there then, just flex your knees to relieve a bit of pressure from your back and the last
thing I'd want you to do is just move your belt buckle a tiny bit towards target and
that is basically your posture we'd want you to be in, the distance away from the ball,
the width of your stance and your ball position.
In terms of the feet, pressure wise, I want 50-50, so I don't want you to favor any foot
at this stage for this particular club.
So we're in the center here.
Handle wise we're just going to move it slightly forward so it's opposite the inside of your
left thigh and ideally it wants to be about a fist and a thumb away from your thigh, directly
opposite the location of the top of that club.
So not like this, directly opposite.
From that position then, that is how we'd center the golf ball.
In terms of the grip, we want basically to feel like you were going to go and cradle
something with your lead hand like this, so just close your fingers like that and so cradle
something as I call it, pick something off of the ground.
The club should sit in that area and the thumb should run just ever so slightly to the right
hand side of the grip and as we look down, you should be able to see about two knuckles.
The right hand, again, cradle the fingers, so just simply like this.
Let that run under and let the club just sit in that cradle position again, thumb this
time just to the opposite side on top and I've got a ten-finger grip here at the moment
so then I'll just let you just stick out your little finger, slide your hands together and
let that rest in that gap here so it sits in what we call an overlap position in between
the last two fingers of the lead hand.
So again, we're not after perfection, particularly if you're just starting out in the game, we're
after a decent stance, a decent grip, a decent kind of control your weight position.
That is basically the fundamentals.
When we do this bend and bow routine, we are trying to keep everything what we would see
as parallel to each other, so we're not setting up with an open position or a closed position,
we're setting up, standing neutrally as if we were going to read a sign on the wall here,
this is how we naturally want to stand, you wouldn't stand like this or like this, and
from that position then we're going arms outstretched, bend from our hips, next to those knees, bump
the hips, hands forward, that's our start position, shuffle forward to get the middle
of the stance.
Now from there then, all we'd want to do then is build a swing.
From a swinging position or swinging motion point of view, all we want to do is feel like
the arms work up and the body turns, the arms work down and the body turns and we work towards
target.
Pretty simple, I'm not getting into positions here, we're just going to let the club flow
and find its natural, let's call it orbit around the body.
If you are stood correctly, there's an opportunity for you to swing correctly.
Now if I stand correctly and then my arms kind of do this and my body doesn't move and
then I'm going to have obviously an awful golf swing.
The idea is obviously when we let the arms work up, the lead arm is staying straight,
we are creating what we would see as an L shape, just very simply, and we're letting
our body turn so the shoulder gets roughly to round about the golf ball.
And when we swing down, the arms work down, we're turning so the shoulder gets just past
the golf ball.
So very simply, the lead shoulder goes to the golf ball or just past it, the trail shoulder
goes just past the golf ball and as we go through, we're allowing this lead foot to
come up onto its toe to shift that pressure.
The big thing we want to do is make sure we shift forward as we swing through the golf
ball.
Again, if we went to throw a golf ball, we would naturally shift.
So very much when we go to get a golf club in our hand, we're swinging arms up and turning
and then kind of throwing in the direction we want the ball to go.
And our practice swings, we'd want the golf club to be just brushing that ground or taking
the divot in an area that is forward of the golf ball towards target.
But again, the more we get in the feeling of if I was stood here and going to throw
a ball, you'll see how I've got rotation, I'm moving, I'm shifting that pressure, that's
kind of what we want to do in the golf swing.
So standing the right way is the first key, holding the golf club roughly right, arms
up, make a turn, arms down, make a turn and shift.
Try and hold the finish until the ball almost lands and ideally we'd want a bruising of
the turf or a divot starting after the golf ball and forward.
That strike was really, really good and solid.
Very simple thoughts, arms up and turn, arms down and kind of shift.
But starting from the right fundamentals allows your swing to function.
When you stand in a position where your posture is kind of like this or your posture is kind
of like this, your body then has to make adjustments and compensations as you swing.
That is kind of not what we're wanting to do.
The more compensations you have, the more inconsistent you become.
If we get the feeling of turning and the arms going up, hopefully we get the kind of width
structure to our arms that's roughly right.
You know, a little bit of arm bend at the very top is absolutely fine.
A little bit of kind of arms collapsing at the end is absolutely fine too.
But the more we can try and make it feel okay, if I was going to throw a ball or if I had
a tennis racket, you had the ball bouncing and I was going to move through that ball,
how would I do it?
That's kind of what we're looking for in the golf swing.
Sometimes we make this golf game too complex.
Stand good, have a motion and then from there try and feel that you just have very simple
concepts that allow you to hit golf shots and go forward towards target.
And then once we start to get some consistency with what the golf ball's doing, then we can
be a little bit fussier on how we can then channel and dial that in.
Are the balls curving to the right?
Are the balls curving to the left?
Are the balls starting left?
Starting right?
Are we topping the ball?
Are we thinning the ball?
Are we flattening the ball?
These are all things then we can make adjustments to make changes, okay?
