A golf instructor utilizes data and video analysis to correct a student's \"over-the-top\" swing and lack of compression. By focusing on swing plane reorganization and wrist flexion, the session transforms an inconsistent, slice-prone path into a neutral, compressed strike through a combination of physical drills and real-time technological feedback.
Just make this part a little slower,
think about the club going towards the
Trackman box, so out there,
and then change the direction with the wrist kind
of revving as much as you can that way.
At takeaway,
inside, by four.
At delivery,
steep, by three.
Release, at half down, early, by seven.
Shaft lean, at impact, by three.
So, when we look at your swing on the app,
this is the face-on, that's just
highlighting the club release, which
is what I selected at the start, so we'll see
at impact, we talked about compression. If we look at it at impact,
you'll see here that your shaft is back
from where it should be at impact.
Ultimately, that's why you don't get the compression you want.
Now, why that happens is the bigger thing we're looking at today.
And for me, when we look at your swing plane,
swing plane for me causes these issues.
So when we look at your swing plane from a hole,
the club goes back inside and then starts down steeply
in the change direction, the transition area.
And then at impact, then the hands kind
of scoop to try and square the club face up.
If we look at the data from this,
what we'll see here is your spine's forward by five
and forward by eight in the downswing which
means when we swing down you're too much that way okay
and at the same time the lag then gets lost
early by seven so ideally that's the relationship we're looking
to change and we'll see here your
hips are slightly back
as you swing down okay particularly yeah okay we can see on the video
as well yeah so when you don't get
that lateral movement it's hard to get that compression
so the swing plane is the reason it happens
whenever people come over the top hips will
tend to go back to create room for the arms,
but also to try and square that club up.
Okay.
And shallow that club more at the bottom this way.
Yeah.
So it's like a shallowing mechanism.
Again, I think we want you to shallow it the right way.
Yeah, so it's all sort of counteracting for the issue.
So if I put on this, you see in the release set,
if I put on this a spine tilt,
you'll see here when we look at the key positions.
So at the top of the swing,
you're pretty much in the right place.
As you swing down, you see how much,
how forward you are.
Yeah.
Particularly when you get to that position there.
So that's where your spine should be,
in that blue triangle.
So ideally the hips want to be close to where they are,
but the spine needs to be further back
and obviously we need a bit more lag at the same time.
Yeah.
Okay.
When we look at the other angle,
this we ask to look at swing plane.
The yellow dots are your backswing plane.
That's the blue zone where you should be.
The white dots are your downswing plane
and that's where the blue zones
where you should be on the way down.
So inside by four on the way back,
steep by three on the way down.
But when we look at the critical points in between,
obviously you're more steep.
The swing plane is, on the way back,
is shallow by five and on the way down steep by five.
complete kind of polar opposites yeah
um and then you really extend your hips at contact to try and
get shallow up plane so very typical of what we see
with a lot of golfers yeah the club traveling
inside raising up to a good position starting down steeply
and then the body kind of early extending
and hanging back to shallow it
and then the wrist working hard to square the clubface up a bit yeah
which will give you more your pull shots yeah
but they'll be less compressed and then the ones you
hit which are very low or obviously you're
not getting that shaft forward and the club's
travelling up a little bit too much at contact yeah okay okay
so the plan is going to be very
very simply we're going to try
and get your if we can your swing plane a bit more organized yeah
and at the same time then try and get you to shift a bit more down
and bounce through the ball okay
so the idea will be we'll try and work a little bit
on the compression but at the same time work
on the reason why that compression
is yes yeah okay we need to address it the over and under
nature of what we're going to do with these swings
the big thing and then trying to get that shift
a bit more organized yeah
because i think if if i get you moving your weight better without
changing your plane you'll end up coming over
the top more yeah you'll compress it more but
hit shots left and big slices drive will be really hard work yeah
so it's kind of you might
get some instant results yeah long term go
on instant results for long term yeah so if you can
take yourself again roughly the same shape as you just
were we're just going to use two very simple
visuals initially okay yeah okay so the idea is to try
and take the takeaway back now outside that
white line if you can
and bring it down that yellow line if you can just visually okay good
it'll feel like a big loop for you so again try
and feel white line yellow line and give it a hit
for me on plane half down steep
by two at delivery steep by two
so the down swing was similar yeah
you were steep by more than that halfway down
but same impact but the back swing was actually
on plane yeah so the good news
is because you took it back straighter you didn't revert then
to come over the top more so again take the club back for me
so we're going to go back white line
on top of the swing and then the shallow end
is going to feel like a change of direction this way
Also long term what I want to feel
is this left wrist flexes a bit more there.
Yeah.
That'll help get that club in that position.
So the feeling is going to be very much
that you're swinging towards that camera.
Okay.
Okay.
Half down,
shallow,
by two.
That's delivery, shallow, by two.
Very good.
And that one you actually hit from four degrees from the inside.
Yeah.
It's a very, very different data.
Okay.
So the idea now with this rod is you have to go over the rod.
Yeah.
Under the rod.
Yeah.
Just go gently.
So go about 50% of your pace initially.
club at takeaway outside by four
at half back steep by five
at half down shallow by five
but totally the opposite of what we had earlier yeah slightly too steep
on the way back slightly
too shallow on the way down
so this is really making you change the nature in which you move
the club very good
so that when you hit four degrees down
but your path is actually 0.3
of a degree from the inside you hit more down
but more from the inside so that's ultimately
what we're looking to do very good obviously it's not full speed okay
so for me the big thing in
transition is how your wrists are working
so what we tried to do is change the nature of what the
club's doing to hopefully help the wrists work better
but ultimately because we want compression
as well at contact and that's probably the big goal
when you walked in we need to get this wrist
more into flexion at contact
which is more bowed that gives you a bit more shaft lean and delofts
the club which gives you compression in two
or three different ways so what i want to do basically
is for you to feel when you change direction we really feel like
this wrist revs works more
towards this back wall, it comes down like that.
Now, in order for you to feel this,
we're gonna do a practice swing with a funky grip.
The idea is you put your lead hand on the club
and you get your trail hand and you put it underneath
so it wraps around your knuckles like that.
As you get to the top of your backswing,
you use your trail hand,
pull your lead hand into that flexed position,
and again, try and take it back nice and straight
so it's not, again, we're still working on that backswing,
playing that kind of figure eight type swing,
and then we pull this wrist into the position
all the way down to impact, and you see there,
impact how I've got that club now
with huge shaft lean huge amount of flexion I'm really
delofting that club yeah the idea would be you know practice swing
and then maybe normal grip
and then when you go to normal grip feel like you
do the same movement just using the memory how it
how it works yeah um so you can repeat that for about five
or six times for me so it's kind of
practice swing then go to the golf ball it's nice
and gentle start to feel like the compression even
with a shorter smaller slower swing yeah okay have
a go with that for me in terms of that
and it's just wrapping this hand
on top yeah i'll guide you through it now but
yeah go to the top and use your trail hand perfect
and then keep going keep
pulling it keep pulling it keep pulling it keep pulling it
all the way to there so at this point here we want a tailor-made
facing kind of horizontal yeah or even down to the ground
okay okay let's try it
with the ball and again with
a normal grip initially
you can hit golf balls doing that funky grip i
do that quite often for my swing
yeah it's hard and it feels uncomfortable yeah but
but again it's again taking it to the extreme
so it can be a case we do a few shots like that but
just try and feel it first of all
so again try and still feel over
and under you probably overdid
it a little bit then so two degrees from the inside
so fabulous in what we were at the start
and you see that that wrist how it worked
then transition sort of as it come down and bow
yeah almost a bit too much yeah
which is great for practice as long as when we go to a more
natural swinging and we're looking
for these practice drills to evolve into normal swing
that's the idea nothing else okay let's
do the same thing again for four or five shots what we're
What we're doing now is a different way
of trying to get you to shallow that club, so
we're trying to get you to hit that tee peg on the ground, okay?
The idea basically is you're still trying
to do it with that wrist in the same backswing
direction but you're trying to hit that tee.
Very good.
Okay, let's try a ball.
So I want you to try and have the same feels but with a golf ball.
Yep.
Good.
What did that feel like?
It felt different.
Felt good, different.
Okay.
Again, two degrees from the inside.
Yeah, different play.
Backswing can be a little higher.
Yep.
And that would get it more like zero path
in and help you with compression, because
again, you can compress that as much.
So again, same thing, do one practice swing where you try
and hit the tee, and one golf ball.
Just do that for three golf balls for me.
Club, at half down, shallow, by two, otherwise, good swing.
Very good.
Club, at half down, shallow, by one, otherwise, good swing.
So if we were going to take this to the golf course,
how we would simplify this would be kind of like
an over-under exaggerated practice swing.
Then when you go into the golf ball, you'd probably just think kind of,
okay, over-under, as your only thoughts.
Okay?
Let's just try that for four shots for me.
Just bump those hips
at address as well
let me say, over under,
make the practice
swing a bit
more exaggerated, particularly the downswing,
think about the tee peg, so we'd have a piece
of grass on the on the course
if we're doing that, good,
you almost want visually the balls to start
right and draw back in practice on the golf course,
whatever ball flight you want. Okay Shane,
so what we saw from from kind of the app
and from the videos at the start was basically the swing
direction or swing arcs
when playing whichever words you want to use, for me changed too much,
Back swing went two in, you came down two over,
that then meant your body had to stall and back up
after going two forward initially in the downswing
which then lost you the compression.
For me if we just fixed the compression we'd end up
with a big slice and lots of big deep
divots and lots of left shots
so I didn't want to do just the compression. What I want to do is
change your swing direction,
take the club back straighter and then change the transition and
then try and get your wrist working better
in the transition to help with the compression.
what we've managed to do in in the short period
of time is change your swing direction your
swing path now or your club path now through
the golf ball is now zeroed out whereas at the start
there's four degrees cut across the ball uh
the plane is lowered slightly in terms of the arc
plane at contact which then will start to facilitate you
then wanting to rotate onto
the golf ball which then will give you more
compression through the shaft but also the
wrist getting into that more flex state will give
you more compression so the funky grip drill is
something I want you to do for 20 balls out of say 60.
I want you to do the swing
plane with the two rods on the ground
or the over and under rod whichever one
over and under rod probably give us more bang for the buck
but obviously it's harder
for 20 balls at the 60 and then 20 balls
with the 60 to be warming up and
hitting normal shots where you try
and transfer that to the golf course and if
the golf course I particularly like to
practice when we try and hit the ground
or grass back by your trail foot because
then we won't have a rod there and try
almost hit that tee or that ground
in the direction that's 90 degrees to you
and then go hit the golf ball after that.
Now ideally once you've done that for a
couple of weeks then we want to try
and focus more on the compression which
then we've got to look at body shape
if that's starting to change on the way down
so are we starting to get this movement,
the spine so forward, are we starting to get
the hips more ahead of the spine
and then the hands more forward, that'll give us
the compression. Okay, any questions? Anything you want to ask?
No I think for me it's sort of good to see
that the drills were taken to bring it
from the outside to back inside the
and understand where my swing was before
to after it's clearly obviously changed so it's better
obviously notice that the ball flight is better
and the dispersion is better so yeah i've got no
the only thing you might get is the odd little as i said thin
and fat shot because again you're
shallower now and if you're still shallow
at impact the way you were you have what I call
a double shallow but if you look at how we use
the app the app was talking to us through that
so it actually gives you that feedback what you're
hitting golf balls so the app is something i
recommend everyone uses for that reason
because if i'm not with you how do you know if you're
you're doing it right or not that's something
you've probably felt quite funky the app told
you your takeaway was straighter
and told you your downswing was shallower without you having
to look at a video or anything you just have earphones
in or let it talk to you at the back
of the range and it tells you those things without you moving yeah
that's why i love the app i think
from the app as well like you say it's good
that telling me that how far you are how far you're in
when it's a good shot it tells you it's
a good shot it tells you there's no no um angles to
work with or anything like it's brilliant i think
it's great it gives you numbers up to 10 and it
kind of goes like green zones yellow zones
and red zones red zones are what they see is okay
yellows are just slightly out but again if you were steep by five
and you go from steep by five
to steep by three you know that's improving it's
a bit like anything if you're losing weight or
getting stronger or running further you've got
that progress bar you can see and that for me
is vital and when you play well even knowing what
your numbers are when you play well and then going
back to it when you're not playing well what's changed
and what you can influence to make you
better so calibrate yourself almost
when you're good and when you're not so good
yeah so thanks very much
